Ok, we all know about
the Minus World in Super Mario Bros. It leads you to
a never-ending water level. BUT, I bet you didn't
know that the
Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. leads to
something DIFFERENT! Yes, that's right, the Famicom
Disk System version of Super Mario Bros. has the
Minus World; heck, you even do the same process to
get there. This version of the Minus World, however,
is much different compared to the NES version. In
fact, the Japanese Minus World is THREE LEVELS!
Play Level 1-2 until you reach the horizontal green
pipe at the end. Break the 2nd and 3rd
blocks from the wall. Stand on the edge of the pipe facing away from the wall -- jump
up and to the right. The goal is to reach the corner of the block that wasn’t
broken. When pulled through the wall, go down the 1st
pipe before the screen stops scrolling.
So now you've done the whole process, right? Well,
Level 1 of the Minus World is exactly like World 1-3
in Super Mario Bros., with the flying fish. Easy,
right? Get through that, and you go to a swimming
version of World 2-3! Yes, now Mario SWIMS in World
2-3, with weird sprites all around! King Koopa shows
up out of nowhere, but he doesn't even attack you!
Even the Princess shows up. MAKE SURE WHEN YOU REACH
THE FLAG, YOU TOUCH IT AT THE BOTTOM! I've heard
horror stories about people who reach the top of the
flag, then Mario never enters the final level.
The final level is interesting, indeed; it's a
hacked version of an underground King Koopa level!
There's lots of enemies, including fast Piranha
Plants and tons of annoying mini-glitches. There's
even dead ends! Weirdest yet, THERE'S NO KING KOOPA!
You just hit the axe, win, and a GREEN TOAD thanks
you! Then you go back to the title screen.
Try it out!
