This cartridge calls
itself a 24 in 1, but really it's Contra
listed 24 times. But it's not just Contra
listed 24 times, it's different stages of Contra
and different weapons. For instance, you can start
on the last level of Contra with your choice
of weapon. This makes the game much less
challenging, obviously, but it's a nice twist on a
what can be a hard game to beat.
Contra 24 in 1 is a "level select" pirate.
For a while before this pirate was made,
companies had been developing multi-carts with
"level select" options, only it wasn't one cartridge
with one game, like this one. Instead, the
developers would put a bunch of games on a
cartridge, and in order to pad their list, they'd
add a listing for the same game but start you on a
different level of that game. They'd usually place
"Crazy" or "Fast" before the game name to indicate
that the game had a different starting point.
Maybe surprisingly, but when I bought this game
there wasn't much interest in it. It cost me about
$3 in an auction.
