I'm a
big fan of side-scrollers. So, it's not a shock that
I actually like Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi: Crazyland
Daisakusen. I had never heard of Vap before I
came across this game, but because of this one, I'm
interested in trying other Vap titles out, like
Baseball Fighter,
Ganso
Saiyuuki Super Monkey Diabouken, Effort
and Tao.
Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi was adapted for the NES
PAL release The Trolls in Crazyland.

You and your girlfriend
are in an amusement park, and she's kidnapped! Oh no, what is a guy in
a blue baseball helmet whose outfit magically changes color when hit
supposed to do? Rescue her, of course! Another damsel in distress story.

The graphics are good,
but there's little that's complex or detailed about them. The main
character looks like a 12-year-old kid, which I think is what this game
was trying to accomplish. The enemies, from monkeys to indigenous, are too cute to look mean, even
the bosses. Everything looks cartoonish, with simplicity taking the
forefront of the artistic design. Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi is
clean-looking.
Most of the levels have an amusement park feel to them, but some of them
take place in what appears to be caves and forests.

I like the music in the
game -- very catchy and gives the feel that you're in an amusement park.
The only thing I don't like is how your weapon (plain old balls and,
later on, soccer balls) sound like a bomb going off when you use them,
or hit someone with them. The sound effect doesn't fit the weapon.
That's only a small complaint, and other than that, the audio is good
enough to be acceptable.

Doki! Doki!
Yuuenchi is simple as pie. The jumping is not at all
disorganized, and the shooting isn't bad either. The only parts I
had trouble at were trying to kick it straight up in the air. I
simply just mashed the buttons to do this. The only place that might
bug you is when you go on the wooden boards that move down, but
after about two tries you can do it flawlessly.
In the game, whenever
you get hit, your weapon becomes stronger, and your body changes
color. From one ball, to two, to three, to a soccer ball, to two
soccer balls, to three soccer balls, and then if you get hit after
that, you die. I find this very interesting, because I don't know of
another game where you get stronger by getting hurt. But, at the
same time, you'll find yourself sacrificing your health (therefore,
getting a more powerful weapon) just to get an enemy to stop
bothering you.
The bosses mostly are easy to beat. They have a set pattern they
follow, and once you learn that pattern, you just dodge their weapon
and toss balls at them.

|
|
There's nothing bad about
trying to control your character. The controls are pretty easy to get
the hang of. Only kicking upward might give you problems, hence my
earlier mention of the mashing of the buttons on the control pad.

This is quite a fun
game, and I'm always playing it every now and then to see if I can
get farther than before. Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi is a blessing
in disguise because, though simplistic, you're going to have so much
fun with this game.

The only parts of
Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi that gave me real trouble were the boss
fights. Sometimes they frustrate me to no end, because your jumps
are too low for the barrels and such they throw at you. Other than
that, the game is quite easy.

I like Doki! Doki!
Yuuenchi a lot. It was a pretty good game. The only problem is that
it's hard to find for sale. The game is sometimes challenging, but it's
fun enough to make you come back. I highly recommend it.
