Sometimes I play a Famicom game and I think it's
just flat out awful. I always say to myself how glad
I am it never was a US release. Then, there are time
when I play a Famicom game and just love it, play it
a lot, and wonder why in the hell it never was a US
release.
Pizza Pop!
is the latter. I don't get it. It's cartoonish, easy, cute for the kids, and
quite fun. So, why no release it for the NES?

You're a pizza delivery
guy, and you're working in a local pizza shop. You get a call and your
boss tells you that you need to deliver someone a pizza! But you have
your obstacles: cats, dogs, pedestrians, things flying in the air --
everything to keep you from delivering the pizza. It's the perfect
cheesy storyline, taking the food kids love -- think Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles -- and mashing it with a cartoon style.

|
I can't complain...these
graphics are great. It looks just like something out of a Saturday
morning cartoon. The dogs and cats even have the stereotypical cartoon
look. This is great work done by Jaleco, a company that spent way too
much time early on making crappy sports games.

Pizza Pop! has
catchy music. And the
sound effects are pretty good, considering what Jaleco was more than
likely going for. No crummy blips and bloops here.

The only way to kill
your enemies is to whack them with your pizza. I'm guessing this
pizza company has amazing pizza, because how the pizza avoids
getting ruined by this boggles my mind. There are enemies, but
they're the typical baddies, sometimes just someone unleashing three
cats on you at a time. The way to gain more health is to pop
balloons and collect hearts that appear.
The game takes place on your typical footpath from the pizza shop to
the place you've got to take the pizza. So, most of the time you're
on a sidewalk, treading past buildings. You can jump up on stuff
like windowsills.
You only get five hearts to begin with, so if you get hit five times
you're gone. But there seems to be enough health around to help out.

|
|
The controls aren't too
bad. My only problem is that the jumping is a little sloppy, and the hit
detection isn't that strong. But other than that, no problems really.
It's pretty solid, simple game, with only minor errors.

It's pretty fun, no
doubt about it. I've played this numerous times. I'm sure kiddie
gamers would enjoy this a lot, too. It's strong point is how cute it
is...the characters are fun to see.

Pizza
Pop! isn't too frustrating; the game is really easy. There are
some points where you'll be highly annoyed, but those are just
nitpick moments where it's mostly your fault and not the game's
fault. You might find yourself cursing the game because the pizza
boy didn't hit the enemy coming at you even though you pushed the
button at the right time.

|
Pizza Pop! is
quite the surprise, because when I first saw this game I thought it was
going to be nothing more than some goofy and lazily-programmed mess.
That was until I actually played it. Hidden behind a kiddie storyline is
a fun game that I find myself playing a lot. The graphics, sound, and
gameplay might be kiddie, but that doesn't mean you should avoid it.
Give it a chance.
