Title: regarding FDS sound on NES
Post by: Elrinth on January 11, 2017, 06:47:08 am
hi, so I got in a pretty exciting discussion with some random guy on facebook about famicom expansion audio on NES.
According to him, it sounds like shit on the NES when modded.
According to me, I think it sounds just fine after what I've heard on youtube from people who've done mods.

I noticed this thread: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=1860.0

But it doesn't really answer my question.
Now my question is. How does FDS expansion audio sound on a modded NES?
Can someone record such audio for me?
now I'm not talking about everdrive or powerpak audio... I'm talking about real famicom disk system audio.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "modded nes".  My nes is not modded but I do have the enio board plugged into the expansion in order to be able to hear the expansion audio on games like The vr6 chip in castlevania 3.  I also had to have a proper 60 pin to 72 pin converter which I bought from krikzz to actually hear the audio correctly.  I compared this to my av famicom and didn't notice a difference in sound quality but the nes was quieter if I remember correctly.

Ok on to your question.  I can play FDS games on my nes by using a really ugly combo of 3 converters in order to extend beyond the case lid.  I've seen other people take the top off of their nes and hack it up to allow the FDs adapter to connect to directly to the nes 72 pin and I'm also aware of the honeybee adapter but I don't own one.  I tried to record some audio for you but after listening to an av famicom vs the nes I realized the nes does sound like garbage as it's not picking up the extra sound channels from the FDS.  I don't think it's a problem with the nes however,  it's because at least one of my converters(from a gyromite cart) is not wired correctly to carry the extra sound channels.  I theorize if I had two krikzz adapters the sound would have worked correctly.

Other than the honeybee adapter I don't think there is a great way to even connect the ram adapter to a nes and I haven't read that the honeybee is wired correctly to carry the extra audio channels.
