What happened?

Well, JL and I guess Stan (unconfirmed) said the site was down for a while yesterday while I was upgrading the forum from 1.0.7 to 1.0.8. I didn't notice any problems. If anything, it gave JL I good reason to bug all the members with a blast e-mail. :P

Hey all, our apologies for the downtime for the site and forum. We are currently in the process of moving to a new server. Please bear with us until late Monday night. :)

The servers have been moved to a more reliable host. There should be no more errors or downtime, just the greatest forum to talk about Famicom.

Also, I'd like to apologize for the forum being down this morning for awhile. It was of my own stupidity of not realizing the new server required changed folder permissions to work.

From now on it should be smooth sailing. :)

This must have been either a mistake or happened for a very short period of time only. I was here quite often yesterday and didn't get that message.

This was my bad, sorry everyone. For some reason my email wasn't receiving emails from my host, and I didn't receive my monthly invoice, and forgot to pay. As soon as Jerah emailed me(thanks) I found out what happened and paid the bill.

Sorry again, I feel quite stupid I didn't realize payment was due. It was quite the wake up call, as I will be making sure it doesn't happen again.

Stuff like that happens. You don't have to feel stupid, because you didn't do anything stupid and everything's back to normal again. A big thanks from me for keeping this site online. 8)

If posts were lost it was probably because you were posting during the time that the site/forum was moved to a different server.

I was wondering what happened. The error this time was different, and I was worried the server had crashed or something. :(

At least you don't have automatic bill pay that will take the money from your account even if you forgot to put it there. Just happened to me and it cost me $70 in fees. Bastard Banks.
Title: Re: Forum and website downtime: We apologize!
Post by: manuel on August 21, 2008, 03:43:46 pm
That sucks.
Banks take way too much fees.

That sucks. Unfortunately, that's how banks make most of their money. Try calling and having them remove the overdraft charges. I've always gotten out of them. At the least, they can probably reduce them. Unless you've done it multiple times. You just have to ask in the right way and be nice.  ;D Never hurts to try IMO

I'm so mad it's almost funny. I just checked my account online and they got me for another $35, $105 total. I made a deposit and later in the day they took out the fees which put me in the red after purchases I made since my statement EARLIER (once i made the deposit) in the day said i had money. I had money at three, they took out fees at four and they want me to pay for not knowing. I'm waiting on the phone right now, I tried to get this fixed at the bank but they were so rude. The lady i talked to took a call from a friend as soon as i went in her office and sat there talking about a hotel room she rented for so long to her friend while i was just sitting there! As someone who works in customer service I am enraged on a whole other level besides just being mad about the fees. They were just rude as hell to me! They even took a person ahead of me who hadn't been there as long as me. I can't even thing straight they have me so worked up. I've alreadt decided to switch banks but if they don't fix this fee thing i'm screwed. A college student only has so much money and they are putting me in a hole that I can't see the top of.

Finally go through to someone as I was writing and i'm basically screwed out of $105 dollars, at least. I can't believe this.

That's customer service for you.
But her boss can't be ok with that?  ??? I'd complain all over the place about this lady.

What I've found is that it's very hard to actually get fees removed in person at a bank. When you call, your call is typically routed to a call center. These people are much more friendly. A good rule of thumb is to not call when you're angry. Wait until you've calmed down. Start the conversation of pleasantly. Start off with a short, quick, friendly synopsis after they ask you how they can help. After you explain your situation, state what you want out of the call. In this instance, I'd say, "the reason I'm calling is to see how you can help with removing these overdraft charges from my account."

EDIT: Forgot to mention that if you get shot down, keep asking them if there's anything else they can do. Speak to their superior if you have to. Most important thing is to not get off the phone until you get what you want. They'll eventually give in just to get you off the phone.

If they think they're helping you out (which they are), you'll get much further along with actually getting them removed. I always get out of this type of thing. My friends have had me call for similar things for them after they've had no success. I usually always get them what they wanted or better. It's a running joke that I should start a business doing this for people.  It's all in how you ask.  ;)

The guy on the phone from customer service told me to do as well, he said file a formal complaint. I'm a little paranoid that when I go in she will be the big boss because she actually was in one the their big offices. That would almost be funny if she was the local manager.

The guy also said he can't touch the first two charges and he could do nothing about the third yet till it had cleared(it was still pending). At this point I would be thrilled to get rid of the third charge. How much money do they think they can get really, i mean, if i'm getting overdraft charges that usually means the person didn't have shit in the first place so WHY do they add more charges. Isn't two enough.

I once had a friend get 8 overdraft charges. I called for him and got all but one removed. They CAN remove them. I have several friends who work in banks and all the overdraft charges can be removed from their systems. Remember that overdrafts are their profits, so if you accept what they say, they've won money they didn't really earn.

If you bank with US Bank or some other national bank, they all have "overdraft" protection, which is typically a line of credit with a high interest rate. If you overdraft, it goes onto that account and you can pay it off when you have the money (preferably quickly so it doesn't accrue interest). There are no overdraft fees associated with these accounts, so it saves you if you do this often. You may want to ask. May be a nice bargaining chip to have your fees removed, too. Say you'll sign up for this service if they can help you out by removing two of the 3 overdrafts. I'd call again after the third overdraft clears.

That's a good point. Any chance i could just get you to call and i'll cut you a percent of whatever you save me?

I'd be more than happy to give you ideas about how to go about it, but, unfortunately, there are way too many personal details I'd have to know to be successful--things like bank account #'s, full name, account password, transaction history (number of times you've done this in the past), where & how you overdrafted (was it a store purchase, online credit transaction, amount of the transaction), who you spoke with at the branches/call centers, what was said, etc. Your account is notated with each call or in-person discussion you have about things like overdrafts. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing all this info and it'd be illegal for me to represent myself as you--which is why the business idea wouldn't work too well. You should be able to work with them, especially if they've never removed an overdraft fee before. Although, this depends on how small your bank is, too. Local banks don't tend to be as lenient.

Yeah, I'm aware of that, more just wishful thinking. There's a bank all the way a cross town I used to deal with that was alot more helpful than the one I went to today, I'm going to try making a trip there and see what happens.
