Title: List of Multiplayer Game Boy Games (Link-Cable only)
Post by: QUIMDUNG on April 02, 2012, 09:56:59 am
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_multiplayer_Game_Boy_games

Playing link-cable Game Boy mono games is a challenge these days. Due to the extremely low-latency inherent in link-cable communication, it's difficult to emulate over TCP/IP or UDP connection, and very few emulators support this function.

I recently purchased 2 Super Famicom units along with 2 Super Gameboy 2 units. The SGB2 is different from the SGB1 in one very important respect: it supports link-cable functionality. Some of these games are quite fun to play in 2-player.

Do you need two TVs for that?

You can connect a SGB2 with a GB mono, GB pocket, and maybe GB color, so you could get away with only one TV. And you don't need a Super Famicom, you could insert a SGB2 into a regular SNES with a modifier cart or modified system.

I personally have two 30" CRTs next to each other. I can post pictures of my setup if you'd like to see.

Some games, like Scrabble and Battleship and Pokemon the Card Game, aren't properly playable 2P VS if both players can see each other's screen (in these types of games, the player's "hand" should be hidden from the other player). The solution is to use actual Game Boy units or to turn the TVs away from each other.

That seems awesome. :)

I saw you played Tetris DX, have you been successful in Vs Com?

I only play level 9 endless, so no information to provide there.

Before I go way OT, I can inform you I was inspired to pick up another Super Game Boy 2 today.
But does it have any other advantage than the link ability?

Back to Tetris DX, I have been playing it now for two days.. I managed to get 209766 on level 7, and am trying to break that record on level 9...  It gets too fast and boring after level 20 so I'm trying to rack up "Tetrises".   But I have been unlucky with the blocks !!
Also beat Ultra, Level 9 with 0 starting blocks at 2:48. And beat Level 9 with 4 starting blocks (at 3:29) - that's quite difficult IMO.
My Ultra record for Level 9 is 75952.  :D
The randomize function seems to be consistent for each session but different every time the game is started, so sometimes it is easier and sometimes harder to get a good score!

Tetris DX is one of few black carts I think are worth picking up.
It seems they started to put an RPG mode into every other game (even Tennis, action games, etc) which I think detracts from basic game playing. And there's something about the color graphics that bothers me too... Maybe just a nostalgic reason...

godlike! i don't see any different function besides link. i think it has a bit more development with SGB functionality, i think i read somewhere that Tetris DX shows diff border on SGB2.

I think Tetris DX is the best video game ever made (for my tastes). While playing on GBA SP, level 9 my highest score is in the 3 million. but playing on SGB2 on tv, my max scores are now always under 1 mio. very interesting.

I also agree about the color games, I just don't care about 99% of them. But I can't stop buying GB mono games! I bought at least 20 between yesterday and today I think.  :-[

I am also in that phase...  Don't care about GBC, but GB games are so much fun right now.

Please, please post pics of your setup! :)

COOL!  Want to see it in action though ;)

Also love that you need a suitcase for Gameboy games and shoeboxes for carts - it's not just me then, I feel a bit better about that!

you are truly either at godlike status already or very close to it!

i used to have a gametz listing of all my games (just so i had one place where they were stored), but that damn site makes you log in every 60 days or it deletes you, and i got lazy one month and i assume it's now gone =\

got any dupes you're looking to get rid of? I've got:

Cyraid
Deadalian Opus
DuckTales
InfoGenius Systems Berlitz French Translator
Bart Simpson's Escape From Camp Deadly
Bomberman (SGB) (bought 3 copies like a fool... how could this *NOT* have multiplayer?)

would take any game i don't already have.

Holy shit i thought i was bad with the gameboys because i have like 3 GB pockets and a few of the old housebrick GB's and a gameboy advance which you can use the cable on but i don't know about the GBA SP though since i've not seen one for a long time.

lol  ;D

I am happy to trade, but I only collect Japanese games at the moment...

I have all my games in an online database. Databases are superior because you can extract from the data easily, sort them, search, etc...

That's nuts!  [but great to see]

Can you recommend an online database?  Or do you just use Excel Sydrive etc.

You seemed to enjoy Cyraid so much that I had to try out the Japanese version. It's tough.. Finally beat the third world, now I'm in space...

Oh, I thought you had so many copies because you loved it.

Actually I do enjoy it; I think the game boy is great for these kind of action/puzzle games. It is close to Donkey Kong, with the focus on both action and puzzle. You have to play the entire world of some 20 levels before there's a password. Most of the levels aren't too hard once you figure them out, but I've played one or two really difficult.

funny that you say that. because of your mention, i recommended cyraid to a friend who loves DK94. will be interesting to hear his thoughts.

just picked up 2 copies of enix's "dungeon land". hopefully it'll be good 2P

played a bunch of 2p games with a friend last night. some mini reviews:

tetris plus - 1p game seemed kuso (compared to tetris dx) but 2p seemed neat. not that fun to play cus i am just so much better at tetris (because i play tetris dx). nice graphics, SGB functionality.

nail n scale - a godlike game. the vs mode was better than my expectations. just... wow. buy and play this now.

trump boy 1 - it's bridge! i wanna learn bridge. he did not wanna learn bridge. cute cart.

popeye 2 - I'M BRUTUS  :o   this is a cool game, although it is a platformer.

mole mania - we couldn't figure out how to access the VS mode, unfortunately. still hype for it!

fortified zone - wow! very fun, cool game! survival co-op! try it 2P asap, folks. one of the best 2P gb games ever imo.

loopz - mind-altering music. the gameplay... i'm just not sure i like pipe dream gameplay.

chachamaru panic - kind of kuso, kind of interesting. the 2p is just the 1p and each player is on the opposite side of a piece of land.

dungeon land - kuso game with lots of waiting and one interesting idea

yoshi's cookie - holy shit. the VS songs A & B are some of the best GB music i've *ever* heard. not the most compelling gameplay ever, but very nice presentation.

mini putt - it's not a 2p game. but you know what i realized? (and this is scary for me). if i have 2x sgb and 2x tv, there are lots of games that could be fun to play with 2 copies simultaneously. my friend said that this was the most fun of the games we played, and it's not a 2p game! we still competed, and i won with less shots taken.

heiankyo alien - semi-kuso, but it has some very interesting ideas. the intro gfx & music are wild. for 2p, you have a choice between 'new' and 'old', with 'new' meaning players are not on same screen and it has the new GB gfx, and 'old' meaning both players are on the same screen and it has very, very basic old skool gfx. an interesting game but not very playable imo.

boomer's adventures in asmik world - this is a clone of heiankyo alien. and pure kuso. why asmik?

go! go! tank - kind of fun as an amusement, but it really seems kuso. although both my friend and i weren't sure, there could be more to it. it could be a godlike game. prob not tho.

serpent - what. the. fuck. is the deal with the controls? D-Pad left to turn one way, button A to turn the other? kuso.

kirby's star stacker - i have one JP cart and one US cart, and while we could get the vs game started, the screen didn't display for the JP cart. first incompatibility of this i've encountered, but i doubt the last.

ultima: runes of virtue (1) - wow! amazing! this really was like an MMO. and friendly fire is on, so that is interesting. a lot of fun, will explore further. hard to say which is more interesting between this and rolan's curse for multiplayer RPG/dungeon, but i'd have to give it to ultima i think.

zoop - absolutely one of my favorite gb games. while i won every time, i think we both had quite a bit of fun. we just zoned out and zooped.
