Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race how to reset save data?

I don't know how to erase all save data and start a new game. Anyone know how?

MS-DOS4

I read somewhere that turning the system off while it's in the middle of writing save data will corrupt it, and will format it fresh for you.

Maybe. Surely there must be a way to reset it normally?

I tried that, and it didn't work. I went to start the game up, went to save in the menu, and then turned off the system. The file is still there!

Also, can corrupting the data on the disk potentially harm the disk?

It wouldn't harm the disk itself, I don't think.  However, there is a chance that the game software won't know how to handle corrupt save data (in theory, anyway).  Might be worthwhile to try out various save/load/reset scenarios in an emulator first.

Doesn't seem there is or it would be mentioned in the manuals for the FDS games. Only games that has a registration mode where you register a file name have file deletion AFAIK. And even some of those games (like Palutena no Kagami) have a non-deletable high-score list or something.

FDS Study can delete save files and restore them to like they where when the game was new but that would require that you get your FDS image on a computer and write it back to the disk again. There's Chris Covell's Tapedump and the newly made FDSloadersaver(unofficial) for rewriting. You can download both FDSloadersaver and FDS Study here http://kitahei88.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-115.html.

Ah I guess rewriting the disk is the only way to restore the data back to a fresh new copy  :diskkun:  I guess I'll just play the game later once I have a setup for rewriting disks.

Btw, anyone here like Famicom Grand Prix F1 Race and actually played the whole game? I'm just getting used to the controls!

P

Yeah that game looks really good. You can register your name, age, address, telephone number and gender on that registration card in that order (I guess this was used in the disk fax competition). And there's also possible to write messages (Entry Level option) which will also be used in the national disk fax competition.

I've noticed someone else has the same situation as me and wants a fresh save file so we can play the full game as intended. Can someone please try erasing this game in an emulator?

Profeta Yoshitake

Yeah, itsa me, Mario!
The former owner of my disk must have won the competition given the completion and the records saved.
I would love to play the game from start.
I never ever tried to emulate FCD games, so it would be a brave new world to me.

I'll give it a try tonight if I get the time.

Thank you very much, man, but please, do it only if you have free time.
If I had time, I would be trying right now!

I couldn't get it to erase.  I did get it to say "ERR 40" a few times, but that didn't seem to cause the data to get erased.

zmaster18

Thanks anyway! I guess I will just get my disk rewritten later on.

Profeta Yoshitake

Thank you again, UglyJoe.
Only two alternatives remain for me now: finding a "factory sealed" disk or emulating.
