I guess it's just a hacked version of the original SMB. Probably this hack allows you to select one of the 256 original glitched worlds from the start menu.

Quote from: mariowiki.comThe game actually has 256 worlds in total; however, worlds past 8 are glitched and reuse pointers from other levels in the level data. The Minus World (36) is the only one that can be accessed legitimately in the Western versions. However, the other glitch levels can be accesed in the Japanese version due to differences in the Famicom hardware

yes that's right, you are able to select any of the 256 worlds from the start menu -  I believe it's also possible to bring up these glitched levels this using the appropriate codes on an Action Replay cartridge as the SMB game is fed thru it, however I don't really have the patience or the know how to be messing about with all these various codes, it would be far easier and much more fun to have these levels ready to play on a hacked cartridge - please get in touch should you wish to part with your copy - you can message me here on Famicomworld or email me at: PaulLX1@yahoo.com.

People used to swap out another cartridge while power was on (not recommended) to SMB and the game would start with a glitch world. With Family Basic and some code you could even have exact control of what world to start at. I think this inspired Nintendo to make the Fantasy World (world 9) in SMB2j.

I played this hack on the Everdrive and it's fun to try out once, but note that most glitch worlds are mostly unplayable. These worlds are the result of the game trying to load the wrong bytes from the ROM as level data.

I'm interested in seeing how BASIC can be used to hack games. Is there already a discussion of this on FW?

What you do is load up FB, poke some values into RAM, eject the FB cart, insert another game, and then hit reset.  Some games won't re-initialize the RAM when being reset, so your poked values remain.  I'm only aware of its use for the SMB 256 world hack, though: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=4535.0

It's possible to do some hacking as UglyJoe explains in that thread, but I'd suggest to use a Game Genie (or flashcart with Game Genie code support) for that. I heard of how hardware was fried due to hot-swapping cartridges, and Nintendo has always recommended against it.

I would like to point out that, although yes, hotswapping is dangerous, Nintendo also did design most cartridges with a means of protection against it. Here's a couple of random examples:

http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/profile.php?id=1265

Notice how all but a few pins are short, that last few are long. Those long pins are voltage and ground. As long as all the data/address/etc pins are disconnected before the voltage/ground lines, the cartridge won't be damaged by hotswapping.

I actually managed to get one of these a few days ago, but sadly it is staying in my collection.  Sorry :(

Oh wow, that seems strange to me if both versions wouldn't be the same, but if you asked the seller, then I guess he knows!  Good luck with your search mate.
