Nintendon

Hello guys.

I have a original twin FamiCom with a built-in FDS and works-well Kid Icarus floppy.
After a 1st trying to start the game the console just freezing on "Now loading" screen. I took it apart and understood that original belt just broke because of time.
I'm replaced a new drive-belt from eBay, cleaned up gearwheel & main head and passed calibration of spindle.

After that I got just the same thing: FDS freeze on "Now loading" screen and absolutely does not move! Drive/motor not moving, upper Head not moving. No one n-o-t m-o-v-i-n-g. And besides a drive/motor heated in power on. I also tried calibrate him in that small black hole, but it's did not help.

Please help me find out what's going on and repair my FDS. I'm all ears.

Sorry for my Engrish if that isn't right. Русский  :) ;)

Does the motor wheel (the gold one) spin without the belt attached?  If it does, perhaps the belt is too tight, if it doesn't, the motor might be dead.

Nintendon

No, he is not move without belt. But! I found some wreckages of the old belt under the gold wheel, i think if i cleaned up this it's must be works. But why then does not move upper head Maybe they are synchronized with that motor?

I'll let you know as soon as I get some results which...

He is asking if the motor is moving at all. If not, my TWIN had similar problem, one of the connecting cables (accidentaly it was the power line) was simply broken (torn). I had to solder another cable and the drive works.
If the motor is not spinning, try to measure voltage on the drive's PCB.

Nintendon

So, I cleaned up wreckages of the old belt under the gold wheel and now it's fully motile! Whoa!

But now I have another problem - Error №22.

Calibrate of spindle not helps, cleaning of heads too. I know that is one of the most frequent errors after a replacing of belt but I almost never see her decision and can't understand its meaning. What is "Disk card header block # $ 01 unrecognized"  ???
What do you think? I am confident that I did something wrong, but what?

Nintendon

I found the position of spindle in which I got a black screen with copyrights after which get out error. I had an error's: 21, 22, 24 and 27.
But since I moved it a little bit more I had only error 22. Unfortunately I was not able to restore it to this position.
I tried the 8 directions (similar compass) fixing them all with a bloked (start) position of metal plate and continue getting frigging error 22.

Is it really so randomly!? Please show me how to calibrate the FDS so that it is 99% should be fully works.

I just don't know what to do...

read some docs about FDS disks and their block layout.

if it's the very first data block on the disk, then, it's kinda obvious that something wrong has happened while reading very early position of the disk.

how much disks do you have? have you tried another one disk?

i suggest you to get brand NEW old stock (unopened/unused) disk and calibrate your drive against it. It's not that costly as you might think.

who knows under what conditions used disks get rewritten :(

Nintendon

2nd day of tries of calibrating and no any results: Err. 22.
I have only one game, it's a Kid Icarus. I'm sure that disk is works. I buy it from famous man and I trust him.
If I did not see up this screen I would be sure that is disk. But he appeared, so it's different problem. And calibration not solve this.
I'm just tired. I tried tomorrow, and if It's not work I omit my hands and sold the console.

Buying of more another games and waiting of theirs delivery month is not rational for the operating console with not clear working. It's cool to have 2-3 for that but I just do not have.

What i did with my FDS to calibrate the motor was to turn the motor speed slower/faster (right/left) starting from the fastest speed and turning the speed slower after each disk read test. On mine at highest speed it would get err 27 and slowest speed it would get err 22.  I started getting successful reads at about 70% speed, (if you get black screen you are getting close to good read)

If you hate having to eject disk every time, I would unscrew the switch on the side of drive after putting disk in. Just hold switch in downward position to disk inserted and let go to signal disk eject.

Also are you sure the belt is not stretched out? I had one belt I stretched out too much and when i put another belt in it more carefully it worked

Remember that the height of the hub on the spindle will mess it up, too. It should be at the same height as the set-screw hole is located.

Nintendon

4 days of unsuccessful attempts. All for nothing.

I did everything according to the instructions tried all options; covering all my fingers blisters from continuous return of spindle to original position. It just does not give me.

Let this sad experience will stay on the pages of FamiCom World.

Thank you all for your answers and your help
I give up. Sell the console and just buy original FamiCom.
