Hey there!

Seems like you wired the CHR wrong. It should be wired just like the PRG:

Code:
EKROM (mapper 5):
PRG AND CHR:
Bend up pin 1, 2, 24, 30 and 31
Solder pin 1 to hole 30
Solder pin 2 to 24
Solder pin 24 to hole 31
Solder pin 30 to hole 1
Solder pin 31 to hole 2

It should look like this:

http://jensma.de/upload/files/72IvGSWDPwnIq5UBgEUc5.jpg

I just did the translation a few days ago Cheesy
(Battery not jet soldered in on the pictures)

Good luck fixing it!

check all connections on the eprom.

I did a repro a few days ago and found it not working as well.
Turned out I had 2 legs not connected on the PRG side and 1 on the CHR side.

fixed the connections and now it's working fine Smiley

I checked all connections with a multimeter.

Huh, maybe the pinout on NESdev is wrong? I was going by the datasheet.

I'll wire it as you suggested jensma. Thanks

No problem, you're welcome.

Looks like you lifted just one extra pin of your CHR, should be a quick fix  Grin

If the game isn't booting, the only chip you need to look at is the PRG ROM. The Famicom PPU doesn't need a working CHR ROM to boot.

Here's my wiring instructions:

MMC5 (mapper 5):
PRG socket:
Bend up pins 1, 2, 24, 30 and 31
Solder Pin 1 to Hole 30 (A19) (only for 27C801)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 24 to hole 31 (/CE)
Solder pin 30 to hole 1 (A17)
Solder pin 31 to hole 2 (A18) (only for 27C040)
CHR socket:
bend up pins 1, 2, 22, 24, 30 and 31
Solder Pin 1 to Hole 30 (A19) (only for 27C801)
Solder pin 2 to hole 24 (A16)
Solder pin 22 to hole 31 (/CE)
Solder pin 24 to hole 22 (A13)
Solder pin 30 to hole 1 (A17)
Solder pin 31 to hole 2 (A18) (only for 27C040)

Thanks HVC-Man.

I was following incorrect instructions based on an old nesdev thread.

My pin 24 on the PRG rom was soldered to ground, not /CE
My pin 24 on CHR was soldered to hole 2, not hole 22.

It's now working properly!

Edit:
Are there 2 different title screens?
I just put the cart back together and now i'm getting a title screen that looks like plain text.

Edit 2:
I think the title screen changes when you delete the save files.

I wired CHR and PRG for other MMC5 games (Zelda: Legend of Link for example) the same way jensma said and it works great.

I'm not even sure you need to lift pin 22 of CHR.

Pin 1 is needed for 8 mibt roms only. For just breed you can lift that pin and leave it unconnected to save yourself a step.

Hi all, sorry to resurrect a thread, but I'm having issues making a Just Breed translation with M27C1001 eproms.

I've tried following the listed pinouts on this page, and from several other places online, but cannot get the game working. I get a garbled screen, or solid colours with bits of flashes (screen pic attached)

Has anyone had success with M27C1001 chips and the MMC5 in Just Breed?

Any help appreciated.
