I played Actraiser for a bit and loved it - never played it before but ended up playing it through to completion.

Had a quick dabble on Professional mode - couldn't really feel a difference, what is it?

I beat Rocket Knight Adventures last week.  It was one of my favorites as a kid, but I never finished it.  Guess I've gotten better, since I polished it off (normal mode) on the first attempt.  Also started getting into Ghostbusters on the Mega Drive.  The game's really charming, but a *lot* harder than I expected.

This weekend has been devoted to unlocking as many secret characters as possible in Smash Bros 3DS.

I had Ghostbustes on SMD as a kid - never could beat the first boss, but I kept playing cos I loved the music :D

Had a serious go at Alien 3 (NES) this afternoon. I got to Mission 6, which was much better than I'd ever previously done. (I was playing on easy, wth 9 lives.) I'd really enjoy the game a lot more if the time limit wasn't so strict. I'd seriously cough up half of my lifebar to get even 50% more time in the stages. (And the difficulties don't affect the timer; I think they only affect how much damage you take from the xenomorphs.) I've never been killed by an alien in that game. I die by timer 100% of the time, and that's just so much more frustrating and unsatisfying.

Yes, I think the NES version is quite borked - I liked the SMD original version but the same frustration applies.  Definitely a game I would only play with a map, or no time limit.

One of my favourite games! :)
I take it you only tried the first stage in Professional mode? I think it's a mode where you only play the acts without the simulation mode part. So it's pure platform action.

Try the Japanese version if you can (if you didn't already). It's better in my opinion with more enemies. It also has a translation patch if you have a flashcart.

I had my first taste of Lightening Force (Genesis), after picking up a nice CIB copy for store credit at a local game store. It's a pretty cool SHMUP. Honestly, the Genesis is a great console for the genre.

I actually wound up beating Alien 3 (NES) only a few hours after last posting about it here. I did set it to easy, and gave myself 9 lives (since you can set that in the options). I got about 3/4 of the way through it on my first try, and actually beat it on my second try. And yeah, the time limit did kill me five of the six times I died on my winning run. (And all nine deaths on my failed, practice run.) But yeah, the second time I tried the last level, I was so sloppy and frantic I actually got myself killed before the time ran out. (That was probably a first, in the dozen or so times I've played it.)

I've been playing a lot of Thunder & Lightning (NES) over the past couple of weeks. My best run to date maxed out on Level 18 (of 30).

We have an arcade cabinet at work with one of those iCade xx-in-1 emulation boards.  Played some 1942 before heading home of Friday.  Got 144000 points and the current office high score!  The joystick on the cabinet is four-way and there's only one button, so I couldn't move diagonally or use the rolling attack :P

I've started my weekend off with some Mega Man X2 (SNES).
