Here the seller (Ryo) states its a repro.

Id still say its worth a fair amount due to the quality (certainly not $200 though, Id pay a little over $100), it has a box and manual. AND there is no ROM dump out there.

The screenshots look emulator quality.  Maybe there is no available dump, but it looks like it has been dumped at some point.

I am not trying to knock on Ryo's sale at all, but this is one of the exact reasons why I am against reproductions for gaming devices.  We see it a lot with Nintendo and Sega, and now I saw this with the Famicom. The box and manual are a nice touch, but I personally would never want to pay a large amount for some repro like this, which imo, has little to no historical value.  Judging by some of the responses on here, it seems like a lot of people were confused when it is being sold as a pirate (at least I was a bit confused, wondered what the heck the thing was), and that just creates feelings I don't like.

I think it has value outside of collector, historical value.  But I do think 200 is a bit steep also.

If the game was not made during the time period of the Famicom, is not a bootleg, is not an official cart, and was only made by some fan afterwards, what historical value would it hold? This, to me, is like collecting replica paper money made by a museum...nice to hold and have, but worthless at the same time...

I'd have to agree there. Selling it as a pirate when it's someone's personal repro and then making up an inflated price really doesn't sit too well for me :x

I said I think it has value outside of historical value....

But on that note, the current repro phase IS historical value.  Pirates didn't have historical value when they were made, nor did official games.  Maybe you don't see it now, but in 10 years you will.  How much value you attribute to that is another thing.  The repros made from FDS conversions were selling way more than this (ask Stealthlurker), but I don't think this is the same.  Still, at the end of it all something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  That is true more than anything else covered here.

Did this version of R-Type ever get dumped?

If it's a reproduction doesn't that imply there is a rom?

I have a magic dragon cartridge which I think is awesome but I would love to have something like this! Way out of my price range though.

L___E___T

It does, but I gathered it was a converted ROM of Magic Dragon.  It could be that the conversion has not been shared.

If made by the guy that did the Strider conversion to JP version and similar releases (Stealthlurker has some) then I don't think it's out there yet.

Meh, if it is a fake, I am not sure why would anyone be interested in it?  I mean, basically it is just a hack of Magic Dragon, right?  A hack of Mario 1, for example, wouldn't garner this price or this much attention, so why the difference?

Not this cartridge specifically. Just the idea of having what appears to be a faithful port of r-type in 8 bit.

I'm pretty sure "official" (if you can call it that lol) Dream Mary cartridges go for a half decent amount. Not $200 or anything but not cheap either. I've seen them go for $40+ And that is just a simple hack of super Mario bros. I get what you're saying though. This could easily be taken for something it isn't.

I'm much more interested in this than a random pirate cart. A while back I asked Ryo if he still has any of these left, but sadly, no.

Thanks.

Looks like mysterious game/hack/repro.

If this is something really unique, price of $200 is very low. But... there is no story behind it.

If this is "hack" of another game, price is very high. But... if this is hack, why it is not known? R-Type itself is very famous.

If it was made for personal use, there is no reason to sell it for only $200 and do not release any information. $200 will not patch a hole in the budget. And batch of, let's say 10 carts, $60-70 each can bring more profit, because setup cost is about the same.
I don't buy, sell or trade at moment.
But my question is how hackers at that time were able to hack those games?(c)krzy
