Title: Best Famicom shooters
Post by: satoshi_matrix on May 01, 2007, 10:33:54 pm
Becides Dragon Spirit, Gradius II and Salamander (which may or may not be the same as Lifeforce, I was never quite sure on that) are there any Famicom or Famicom Disk System only shumps that are worth a look? The NES has quite a few: 1943, GunNac, Lifeforce, Gaurdian Legend and I love them all. Any Famicom shooters never make it over that are worth a look?

Otocky!  The musical shooter :) Lots of fun.  Halley Wars is also supposed to be a really good game. Those two are for FDS, along with Falsion and Gall Force. Star Luster, Super Xevious, and Thexder are some Famicom only shooters.

Twinbee :)

Hehe. I love Twinbee. There's also a hacked version called "Van-1" (?) where the ship is different, the bells are now diamons and the enemies are well different... Another good shooter, by the wat, is Sqoon. Is not GREAT, but does the job right.

Yeah I like Sqoon, but that was for NES too.  Moero Twinbee and you can get some three player action going.

Twinbee is indeed a fun game! Wird how everything hides in clouds though.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Otocky The musical shooter? Now that sounds interesting. Can you tell me more about it?

Star Force was neat.
What about MACROSS?

In Otocky, every time you shoot it makes a different note with different octave in different directions that you shoot.  So, basically you are making the soundtrack to the game while you play.  Here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6L9tKNPrbs&mode=related&search=

It has really taken me, actually I'm at stage four, really impressive!

Recca is awesome. Actually my pirate cart only says Carnival 92' but it's worth it. I never end the game. LifeForce is awesome too as Parodius.

Guardic Gaiden is the best one... Zelda meets Aleste...
Most of my games are Shooters and there are not many so special like Guardic Gaiden (US/PAL = Guardian Legend) Musik is absolut great, many weapons, sweet story...
test it !

I never really liked the Gardian Legend. I mean I own it, but the non-flight missions are confusing and in my opinion, boring. This is one of those games that you would need the manual to understand. Without it, it's lost on me. I much prefer simplier shooters such as Gun-Nac. Now THAT's a good shooter!

Me too. There's many good shooters on the 80's. Vulgus is a simple game the Famicom users weren't able to enjoy as it never got a home version. It was the first Capcom game. Thye same goes to Stinger, the first Seibu game. Of course, let's not forget Xevious/Super Xevious, the Famcom versions of these game are very good.

For some reason, I hate Macross. Since I was a child, I never have been able of found a meaning to that game. I think you have to watch Robotech to understand it :D. Going a little off-topic, one interesting thing to note is that my Famicom and my TV are both PAL-N (but able of show PAL-M and NTSC pictures too) and the games doesn't fill the entire screen. Instead, they look like a (16-color) movie, with black bars up and down. Artistic, I think.

Awesome! Do you have a scanner sakanabito? I'd greatly appricate it if you could scan the front and back of the Gradian Legend box. It's all for a project called the Cover Project. See the thread here: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=995.0

If you could, please email the scans to me at satoshimatrix@hotmail.com. Many thanks.

Thanks for the effort uroko-sakanabito, but I need scans at 300dpi to be any use. That's the reason why finding scans is so difficult. There are only a few sources of NES box scans out there, and most are 30-46 dpi at best.

Though I might be able to do something with that Japanse cover.

I buyed Zanac (compile) sealed and Moero Twinbee (complete) for the Famicom Disk System (both together for 20 $) today.

After this review, i had to buy the game

BUMPING THIS OLD THREAD but I was really looking for a List of every type shooter that this community might be aware of, that exists on the Famicom.  I'm a huuuuuuuge "shooter" fan/gamer but was never really up to speed on just what was out on the Famicom/NES?  I mostly got my fix on the PCE DUO and Mega Drive, but I'd like to get a sizeable collection of *worthy* shooters for my AV Famicom.

Currently I have:
---------------------

Crisis Force (The best of the shooters I own)
Gradius
Gradius 2
Salamander
SDF Macross
(a major dissapointment for a Macross shooter  :()
------------------------

I'm aware of the awesomeness of RECCA, one I'll likely track down, but outside of that game, what's really what many would consider kick ass shooters?  I prefer vertical scrolling to horizontal, but both are more than welcome in my collection .  Crisis Force has proven to be pretty good, though I definately see a stage that rips off stage two of the Mega Drive games ALESTE (M.U.S.H.A. in the US).  While I love me some Gradius, I'm looking for stuff primarily that's faster paced and sleek looking ala' Crisis Force, Recca etc.  Any help on this is much appreciated.

True enough.  I guess what I was trying to say was that I'm looking for "kick ass" shooters more in the vein of Crisis Force or RECCA, over all else.  It's really too bad a game like AREA 88 or even the SMS's "Aerial Assault" (an AREA 88 rip off) didn't appear on the Famicom, to my knowledge anyhow.  It's been forever since I've played Star Soldier or 1943: Battle for Valhalla,  but those are two that now coming to mind I'm going to have to re-procure soon.  The one I'm wondering about is Gerry Anderson's THUNDERBIRDS ???  The Super Famicom game was a let down, but I understand that the Famicom/NES version is a shooter?  I'm a huge supermarionation fan (mostly Captain Scarlet over Thunderbirds, but whateva) but if the game is cool that be enough for me.

I own both Gradius games already, I beat the first one bitd as a kid, still have yet to beat Gradius II though.  Some of these games were just hella hard once you died ONCE with everything, just as you mentioned.  In that regard I do believe some *shooters* were too challenging for the wrong reasons.

Hmm... well then it looks like I'll be procuring me a copy in the future.  The cart label doesn't really grab me, so had I not had (2)  people recommend it, I'd have probably never bought it.  Even in 2008, I'm still sold off of great box and/or label artwork for a video game.  Guess it's how I got "sold" on a lot of Atari 2600 games back in the day too, but of course the artwork was a guhgillion times better than the on screen presentation back then.  Still power up that system though from time to time.  Thanks for the recommendation guys.

Seriously, this game is bitchin'. It's quarky, fun can be found for cheap and is a really unappreciated Famicom masterpiece. You can also for the NES version if you don't want to bother with the Japanese.

I've got Uchuu Keibitai SDF coming soon, its supposed to be a decent shooter for the Famicom- I will let you know how it plays! :D

:o No WAY does Life Force suck! It's one of the best NES games ever, period! And it's even more fun WITH the Konami code cheat, because some levels take some getting used to. ;D

Uchuu Keibitai SDF is rather slow-paced, doesn't feel exactly exciting.

Check out Burai Fighter, Final Mission, Hector '87 and Over Horizon.

I am not sure about Life Force/Salamander... it's on order and should be here in a few days. I can give feedback then :)

An unusual one I found rather addicting is Sqoon. It's like a scrolling, top down view cross between a shooter, and Tetris. While not exactly a shmup, it was hard to put down, and this was at like 2 or 3am this morning, when I was almost seeing double.

Ah alright well I picked up a copy of it not too long ago but forgot I actually had it lol. I'll give it a shot.

I like the Gradius power up system more than random power ups, so I think Lifeforce is the better of the two 8-bit Nintendo versions.

Plus, Lifeforce has sweet ass music.

4 games I'd recommend:
Recca (obvious)
Crisis Force
Salamander (Better than Life Force)
Twinbee (THE ORIGINAL, none of that Moero Twinbee crap)

I recommend Super Xevious because it's addictive and incrementally challenging.

yeah, but the xevious/super xevious music is annoying as hell! >:(

Volume knobs are a great invention. :D The level 1 song is used in the Earthbound Arcade.

I lol'd at the idea of a company making fun of their own game.  But it is pretty fun too :P

Nintendo should take up this idea and make the greatest game in the world....

Weegee's Mansion!!!!

Others here have mentioned some great games, but i'll recommend a little FDS gem that no one has mentioned yet..

Gall Force (by HAL)

As far as the others that people recommended: Salamander and GunNac are definites.

Paroidus Da on the Famicom is decent compared to other Famicom shooters, but it can't hold a candle to its bigger brothers.  The game is MUCH better on the Arcade and Super Famicom. Hell, even the PCE version is better..but the Famicom port is still better than the Gameboy version  ::)

Falsion

An extraordinary shooter with a better then average soundtrack thanks to the FDS wavetable. I would like to see this game in action while wearing 3D glasses!

Duck Hunt, Wild Gunman + Hogan's Alley :)

Seriously then, I'd say Gradius 2 is better than Gradius 1 - don't think anyone mentioned it yet.

So I've been thinking about plunging into some of the more obscure Famicom shooters. Which ones should I look into picking up? Already fully aware of Summer Carnival Recca, Twinbee, and Gradius II. Anything else?
