Title: Cool Mario Kart 64 Trophy (Famicom Cart) I won...
Post by: nusilver on December 17, 2013, 04:15:38 pm
Hey all! I just wanted to share something cool that came my way recently. Long story short, I beat 25 other people at a Mario Kart 64 tournament in NYC about a month ago, and since the tournament was sponsored by videogamesnewyork (the cool but way, way overpriced independent/import games store in the East Village), they made me a pretty nifty "trophy," probably completely unaware that I had a Famicom and was able to find out that it was actually just some vanilla mahjong game. Still, cool to have and probably the first time I've made an effort to go out and meet people since we moved here 5 months ago.

I agree that videogamesnewyork is way overpriced, but fun to visit.  Whoever does the pricing has no clue what they're doing.  I've found two of the same game of same quality for different prices.  At least the place is like a mini video game museum.

If you happen to go around the corner to 8 bit games and up then good luck.  That's all I can say.

Very cool! Shame it's mahjong, but still, it's the thought that counts!

Totally... I love 8 Bit and Up! vgny definitely has that museumy vibe, but I shop at 8bau ;)

What!? I didn't even know they had tournaments! How do you find out when they're hosting one? I'm just over on the east side.

In my opinion, both 8 bit and VGNY are overpriced. I think I've maybe bought 2 games from VGNY and just a handful from 8 bit. Game Champ out in Brooklyn is better (but much further away, obviously).

Actually, a friend invited me to the tournament because he knew games was the only way to get me to stop working. They have them at Nevada Smiths in the East Village, I think? Check out sexynerds.net for more info if you want to go to one - I think it's $5 all you can play :)

Video games then watching some soccer with a drink in your hand.  I want to go to one of these tournaments now.
