Title: FDS not loading games,either no error or 22
Post by: AsteroidBlues on December 26, 2013, 11:32:17 pm
 Recently got my FDS for Christmas, I plugged it in and it worked perfectly (well, aside from an error 02, and a game not loading but it was fine after that)

The next day, however, I had went to play some Metroid and it didn't load, I then tried LoZ2 and Kid Icarus, none of the games I had played the day before were working, and I'm only getting a NOW LOADING screen, or an error 22.  :'(

Any ideas what it could be? Apparently the belt was replaced before I got it, but could I have to adjust it? new to my FDS, just wanted some insight before I go ahead following a guide I might not have to.

Try cleaning the magnetic head with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Sometimes it gets gunk on it from degrading disks and won't read correctly. Also, when the FDS and disks get cold, they sometimes don't read very well.

@ericj

Just mustered up the courage to take apart my FDS and clean it and well.. same thing.. still isn't working even though it worked fine that day  :'(

@fredJ posting a video of what happens when a disc is inserted ect. further insight would be great! I can post any sort of pictures/videos that may help in troubleshooting too. :help:

seems the spring is slow to pull all the way back, leading to the game not loading from the correct start position... The system should sound like this when it pulls back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtVMyyuhabA if you notice the difference, it shoule be an immediate "clack".

Could also other problems... But I'd try to fix 1 first. I have a little trick for that. Loosen the spring at the red point (with small pliers! careful so you don't damage the spring!) and attach it to a hole on the side of the FDS that I marked with green.

seems like the moving mechanism is stuck somehow. Could be old grease. Move it back and forth with your finger to try and determine what holds it back and where.
You can compare with another FDS video here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3tfsdjN7w4 , around 03:35

Getting closer..... I took my FDS ALL THE WAY APART and found the band was twisted (it was one of the clear ones) now I'm getting errors 21 and 27 so... I gotta calibrate it right?

Bleh, I just spend 4 hours on this, gonna call it a night and hope I can finish tomorrow  :-[

UPDATE: I got it to read disks!  ;D but.... It will only read "Side A" of 2/3 of them, and I got it to read "Side B" of Zelda II once.. anyone got some tips on Fine Tuning the calibration? :-X

UPDATE 2: THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP! I got my FDS working and reading all of my games!  ;D I think I'm gonna want to replace the belt (it has a clear one that seems to like to... slide off) but other than that I'm glad I finally did it  :-[

Now to buy some more games  8)
