I like good RPGs (and action-adventures a la Zelda) and since I have a PS2 now (well, for some months now) I wondered if you could recommend me some good ones?
I like traditional turn-based battles btw...
I have Final Fantasy X-2, Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Quest V, and Seiken Densetsu 4 for now and I'm planning to get FFX and XII later of course.
Odin Sphere does seem interesting. Anybody already played that?
dark cloud has gameplay like zelda you might want to try that. Also try Grandia 3 the battle system is awesome.

I had Grandia III on my order list from that store the last day, but it was sold out, so I didn't get it. :-\
And of course I forgot Okami. :P I already have that. It's on the way right now from Japan to Germany in a big parcel together with other game stuff. I hope it will arrive some time in June.
I hope it's as good as all people say. :o
Thanks for the other hint. I haven't even heard of that "Dark Cloud" before. I'll surely have a look at that one. :D
My favorite PS2 RPG is Tales of the Abyss. It's everything Symphonia is made better. Except for the overworld framerate drop. But thats minor.

My favorite game ever is Okami. It's everything every game ever is, only made better
fixed
Jedi, did you hack into kite's account? >:(
Okami is good no question, but its an RPG? really?
Get Dawn of Mana I heard it's good!
No jc, he didn't. I just felt it was a good one. Anyhow, okami isnt really an rpg but the original post in this thread does mention action adventure ala zelda and okami is basically like that
Yeah, thanks for the recommendations, guys. :D I missed out on a series of great games over the years.
@kite200: that was a good one. ;D
I still suggest you check out Tales of the Abyss. Its one of my all time favorite RPGs.
I'm not such a fan of the "Tales" series, but I might as well give it another try if I run into it for cheap. :)
I'm trying to build a decent collection of RPGs and Horror games for the PS2. I just want to know which games you suggest...I already hit many of them including the Suikoden series as well as Final Fantasy. There is a horror series I want so bad called Fatal Frame but the games are expensive as hell even though they came out years ago. I did picked up Persona 3 as well and will pick up Persona 4 when the price lowers. I'm currently working on finding Suikoden 5 and the Silent Hills but would like to know of any more of the interesting games out there. Thanks for the help in advance!
Shadow Hearts: Covenant is dark and an RPG. Also:

If you have a PS2, you can run PS1 games...
Blood Omen
Soul Reaver
Silent Hill
Resident Evil 1-3
Resident Evil Survivor
Echo Night
Clock Tower
Koudelka
Dracula: Resurrection
Dracula: Last Sanctuary
Countdown Vampires (warning: BAD voice acting)
Blood Omen 2
Soul Reaver 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
Shadow of Destiny
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts 2
Obscure
Devil May Cry
Silent Hill 2-4
thanks for the info guys!
I take it your PS2 can't play imports.
Play Asia has the jpn versions of Fatal Frame for pretty cheap.
Oh actually I can play imports in my ps2 and been thinking about the import Fatal Frame but I would need a guide to understand what's going on.
When you talk about RPGs on PS2 you have to include Dragon Quest.
already have that one for the ps2....still missing part 9 when is it coming outttttt
Many great ones have already been suggested, and I'm too lazy to compare my list to that one (curse you, shoggoth! *shakes fist*), so screw it, here's my mostly redundant list of suggestions:
Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts Covenant
(these are great cuz you kill two birds w/ one stone, they're RPG-Horror games, but be aware SH1 is more horror, SHC is more comedy)
Koudelka - PS1 - This is the game that started the SH series, worth picking up
Baldur's Gate (great action-rpg)
Champion's of Norrath (another great action-rpg)
Ar Tonelico (excellent anime-infused rpg)
SMT: Nocturne & Digital Devil Saga I & II (they have to be played, and in this order, btw, I HATE the Persona series)
Silent Hill 2 & 3 & Origins (in that order, SH2 is a must-play, but I think you said you have them already?)
Kuon (excellent underrated horror title)
Rule of Rose (it's great if you can overcome the lousy battle engine, very creepy)
Monster Hunter (fun action-rpg, all about tracking down and killing the big beasts)
Ico (I'll cheat and call this an RPG, when it's really an adventure title similar to Zelda, in fact it's what the 3D Zeldas should have been)
Shadow of Destiny (another cheat, this is again an adventure game, but it's awesome)
Atelier Iris series (more great anime-infused rpgs w/ a very extensive item creation feature)
Tales of Destiny 2 (it's an import, I believe there are walkthrus for it, it's the only PS2 Tales of game I've played so far, but it's excellent)
Some cheapies you might want to look into:
Ghosthunter
Ephemeral Phantasia
Bard's Tale
Call of Cthulhu
Radiata Stories
Magic Pengel
Blood Rayne (more action than horror)
Phantom Brave
Katamari can be a horror game if you're epileptic
Mobiusclimber's got it right on the money - Ghosthunter is brilliant, super-underrated, and a bit hard to find. My copy is signed by the voice actor who played the main character, he was a super-cool guy. If I'm being honest, Ghosthunter might be my second-favorite PS2 game behind Metal Gear Solid 3.
"Baldur's Gate (great action-rpg)
Champion's of Norrath (another great action-rpg)"
I forgot to mention those! Oops!
Hey, I likes me some PS2/PSX... so yah...I can suggest stuff :P
Bear in mind both Baldur's Gate, and Champions have sequels as well that hace good reps. I can say that the 2nd BG game is better than the first in gameplay depth, and customization options... plus some fun unlockables. Haven't played the 2nd Champions.
I just picked up Rogue Galaxy and Alteir har har har!
FF, you're looking for good horror games eh? Well, if you want a break from the typical "oh no! a monster!" type games like Resident Evil and even Silent Hill, I strongly suggest a series you may not have heard of: Fatal Frame.
Now, I know you mentioned the PS2, but do you have an Xbox? if so, buy Fatal Frame and Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Director's Cut. Both games are also on the PS2, but their PS2 counterparts look substantially worse (epically Fatal Frame II) and are missing many of the features the Xbox versions have as they came out later, with revisions added (more verity in the ghosts better graphics, removal of glitches) and an entirelly new way to play the second game that almost makes the experience totally different: first person. It might sound dumb, but Fatal Frame is MUCH scarier in third person and you also don't have to worry about the horrible tank-like Resident Evil style controls.
If you don't have an Xbox (and why the hell not? ;D) then you COULD go for the PS2 versions.....but as mentioned, they are inferior, and they are also rather pricey from what I've seen. I picked up Fatal Frame for Xbox for $6 and Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Director's Cut for $12. Once I upgrade my computer, I'll start my review series anew and Fatal Frame 1+2 are definitely candidates for games I want to cover.
I'll go out on a limb here and say that Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly is the scariest game I've ever played.
DOOOOD!!!
Fatal Frame totally creeped me out.
I let my buddy Pat borrow it, and he had a hard time sleeping for a few days.
To be honest, I haven't played too deep into it... BECAUSE of creep factor.
One of these days I'll get around to it.
I would say that the Fatal Frame series is worth a look on the Xbox only b/c of their price point. I've played the first two and quit both of them in disgust after awhile, so I wouldn't recommend paying $40-50 for the PS2 versions. Of course I seem to be in the minority here, but I felt like they weren't that creepy, the storyline was stupid, and the combat was awful. In order to "trap" a ghost, you have to raise a camera, going into first person mode, then zoom in on it and wait til it gets close then snap a pic of it. OVer and over in some cases. It's also difficult to move around and track the ghost while in camera mode. I just found the whole experience more frustrating than anything else. There were a few good scares, but they were mostly of the "ghost jumps out at you w/ no warning" variety.
Alright well I picked up Wild Arms 4, and Tales of Legendia. They didn't had Suikoden 5 or Alteir but I'm watching them on ebay right now. I also picked up Tales of Symphonia for the gamecube. It's supposed to be a really fun RPG.
Tales of Symphonia is excellent. It's a bit cliched, but what they do w/ those cliches is interesting, and the game is just a blast to play.
Tales of Legendia is the worst Tales game in recent memory. If you don't already have it, pick up Tales of the Abyss instead. Its much much better, thought the main character can be annoying - at first. He'll change though.
ah yes I just read the review of Tales of Legendia so well bummer....I'll look for abyss though.
try the PSX and PS2 games from the "Clock Tower" series.... pretty scary (not as much as the original snes, but...)
AHHH the SNES was scary just thinking of that guy with the scissors....I do have clock tower 3 but never got into it well didn't even tried it in my ps2 lol
Just to note I won Atelier Iris the first one just a couple of minutes ago. I saw the intro and it blew me away! I'm going to hunt down part 2 and 3 now!
Hey FF, didja read my big long post about Fatal Frame? Stick with that ;D
ah man you got them cheap! I do have an xbox so I'll check the games out. I see they go on ebay for a lot but if it's anything like koun which I bought for six dollars, and sells 20+ on ebay, I should be able to find it for cheap.
usually the xbox versions are super cheap and the ps2 versions are super expensive. i've even see the xbox ones at like gamestop for $10 apiece.
And its funny.....because in every case I've seen, the Xbox version of a game that's also on the PS2 is simply better than the PS2 version. I guess the PS2's popularity drives up prices still. Oh well, if you've got a xbox, you needn't pay the overpriced inferior version. hardcore sony fans are suckas ;D
