Title: FDS repair help needed
Post by: dougal22 on August 01, 2014, 09:59:48 am
I finally got a disk to test my FDS. I bought the disk as untested but it looks in good condition.

I inserted it but all i heard was a motor spinning. Opened the FDS up and found the belt completely torn in pieces.

Since I did not have a spare belt, I used an old used (but not torn) belt from a Spectrum +2. Fitted properly and the motor turns the cogs/wheels but the belt is somewhat loose.

Tested it out, this time it seems to be doing something but getting "Disk Err 21" and "Disk Err 22"

I sort off tried alignment and motor speeds but it did not do anything. After ages messing about the belt slipped off.

I have ordered a brand new FDS belt.

Do you think the Belt is def one of the problems if not the only problem ?

The belt is only an issue if it falls off constantly. If the belt stays in place and turns the wheel smoothly, then you must focus on aligning everything else!  8)

Well it could actually be the belt if it is close to breaking point and moves the wheels uneven.

Belt slipping off is otherwise a major reason for problems. Make sure to clean all the cogs very thoroughly (and the little circuit board if these is remains there)

And when that is done and all, the calibration is left.
Units with the bigger metal plate are more difficult to calibrate and may need precise precision in both motor speed and head adjustment.
