Post by: BlockABoots on August 02, 2014, 01:50:03 am
Have seen on YouTube people who have done a stereo mod to their AV a famicom systems that just has a 2 position switch to turn the effect on and off but I can't seem to find a guide for a stereo mod for  the AV famicom at all. Can anyone point me to a guid to carry out the stereo mod on the AV Famicim

Unfortunately there is no "stereo" on Famicom, but some folks just splitting audio outputs from APU into two channels.

Exactly!

To get stereo you would have to reprogram every game in addition to mod your Famicom.

He's talking about 'pseudo-stereo'. My Hudson Sansoi Controller has it built in. Basically, depending on which direction the controllable player is moving, the sound will be louder on the speaker the character is facing. It's not a great effect in my opinion. I prefer regular audio!

I think Tea4Two does this mod built into the system using a custom mod board. It's not a common mod, it's more of a gimmick that isn't really needed.

Yes splitting the sound channels into the two audio lines like 80sFREAK was saying is another variation of "pseudo-stereo" but doesn't really make any sense. It would just make some random sound or music come from one speaker and some other sound from the other with no relation to the game.

Stereo on Famicom/NES is impossible, since the games are programmed to output mono sound :). However, it is possible to split the APU's output into two channels. I do not know much about this procedure, but a quick Google search shows this results:

Note that I'm not responsible for any damage to property or life inflicted as  a result of following the instructions contained in the aforementioned links! Also note that the links are NES-specific, but I suppose most of the information applies to the famicom

By the way, is it just me or am I the only person who just hates that when people do some unnecessary stupid shit like that on their consoles?? Really, what's the point of splitting channels into 2 different speakers, do I feel edgy after that or something?? They are DESTROYING hardware that's not produced anymore, not to mention thinking about destroying that beautiful Famicom AV (that already needs no modifications whatsoever).... makes me sick...

If the console is modded for personal use, then so be it. Not every Famicom belongs in a museum you know ;) And these consoles are on average $40, so it's not even a waste! If you can make your experience better than what is originaly made in the system, why not? Now maybe modifying something uber-rare like a Sega SG-1000 would be a bit dumb, but if it's for personal use whatever :P

I also used to think it was stupid, but I'm thinking it is kind of cool in a way, like a beatles "stereo" album (instruments in different speakers) is preferred to their mono albums.

First of all, AFAIK this cable won't get you "stereo", but will make mono sound be played on both speakers (if it can even do that), something that can be done using the TV's OSD/settings menu  ;). About mods, I honestly doubt the usefulness of a "stereo" mod, but some mods, like the AV mod on a non-AV famicom, or an RGB mod, can be useful and might provide a more fullfilling experience :).

But the results must be very different for different games depending how they use the channels.

I'd be more interested in getting a definitive guide to mod the AV Famicom to get proper volumes on expansion audio. I tested mine and compared it to my standard Famicom, they sound different on Akumajou Densetu.

Regards.

Is it notably inferior or just different?

I noticed it's quieter with the Everdrive, but I believe that sound expansion is almost emulated.

Not noticed a difference on older famioms or even clones, but I've never really listened in great detail as an audiophile would either.
