Title: Original Japanese Famicom - White Smoke
Post by: makster88 on October 14, 2014, 03:19:06 pm
Hi All,

Excuse my naivety. I purchased an original Japanese Famicom in Super Potato, Tokyo recently for use in the UK.
At the counter I requested them to provide power supplies - I was provided an RF Switch and Japanese AC Adaptor (100V AC 50/60hz with 10V DC 850mA)

Upon returning, I purchased this RF Cable: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RF-Cable-Super-Nintendo-64-NES-SNES-N64-Retro-Console-TV-Aerial-Lead-2m-/271630050357?

So I hooked up the RF Cable (didn't use the switch), and combined a Travel Adaptor + The AC Adaptor I was supplied with the Famicom and immediately after switching on, I noticed white smoke coming from the Famicom and a pop/bang noise after 5 seconds.

After realising I should be using a step-down convertor or a plug with the current AC Voltage I purchased this and tried using it tonight:

Unfortunately, the Famicom now when turned on doesn't seem to emit any noises or sounds, and the temperature remains the same so I can only assume it's broken - perhaps I've blown a fuse?

What's the best thing to do here?

Option 1) The Famicom is dead, I should just give up
Option 2) Is anyone here based in London that could perhaps take a look at it? I'd be happy to pay for your time & parts
Option 3) Is it possible I've blown a fuse or something that I could fix myself in a straightforward way?

Well I bet you blew the main cap, fuse and voltage regulator but those can be easily replaced.

Do you have any experience with soldering.

UK is PAL
Japan is NTSC

That's more then likely the issue.

I would just buy another one from eBay... buy one with crappy controllers for cheap and that looks like crap, and you can replace the shell and controllers.

Could anyone advise a good place to buy suitable replacement parts or looking for someone UK based who could take a look at it?
It isn't a signal issue and buying a new one off eBay seems a bit silly.

One of many reasons, why i don't sell japanese power supplies.

If you are lucky, you have to replace 7805 voltage regulator and capacitors around it.
IIRC there is 47uF 16V and another 1000uF 10V. When you plugged into UK mains with 230V, output of original PSU was 25V or more.
7805 can hold up to 15V input voltage according to datasheet.
And the rest... you never know.
