Title: ascii fightstick
Post by: nesgamer91 on November 08, 2014, 10:23:46 am
Does anyone have any info on this bada$$ looking stick. Or even how to get one of these badboys? Makes the advantage look like a "baby's toy"!

Anyways, I bet you could get them on eBay (or if you live in Japan maybe Hard Off)

Also, there was an ASCII Turbo Jr. clone by NTDEC on sale at gamedoctorhk last time I checked. (I've never bought anything from gamedoctorhk by the way, and they look a bit suspicious, so ask someone who has done business with them)

The Ascii Stick Jr doesn't look half as cool though.
The Ascii Stick got a good grade here http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/cont27.html.

My favourite stick is the Capcom Power Stick Fighter with a real Sanwa JLW stick. It looks a bit boring but it feels great, can be used with both Super Famicom and Famicom, and it has a 4-way stick mode to play early arcade games with. :pacman:・・・

That ASCII stick is excellent!!  Has an actual Seimitsu stick and feels great!  Perfect for some time attack competition!  I don't know why
the Hudson stick goes for so much when this stick is so much better.  Probably just nostalgia and the huge folowing that Takahashi had.

Cool I didn't know the Ascii Stick had real arcade parts as well!

I have one... actually I have two.
Also have the Asci stick II (turbo). It is more plastic.

Is that the Ascii Jr?  If not, there is a junior model as well.

Well I have two CPS-Fighter sticks. Good for two player games. Although only one of them have a Sanwa JLW (the other one has a Seimitsu LS-40 clone but it feels real enough).

So which one is better in your opinion?

I am not a stick user, so I don't know, hehe.
They can also be chain linked  , I wonder what that will do. I should try that out. Maybe it is only for some crappy ASCII games.

Chainlinking is instead of using a multi-tap. As far as I understand it, it should work the same way so it works in all games that use the "standard way" of reading controllers. You can try it in almost any two player game and they should work as player 1 and player 2, or a four player game and they should work as player 3 and player 4.

I guess the 1/2-player switch is used to control which controller is which?

Oh, Learry? (really)

I thought it wouldn't work because multitapping is too specific and ASCII developed their own special accessories and stuff.
I should try it. Am a bit worried about the amps and such, maybe need 1.5A.

edit,
yes it worked with no problem. I'll assume it will work with all 4-player games.

There's no way you would need more ampere than the official AC-adapter provides. If you are worried because you use lots of stuff that takes lots of extra power (like the Everdrive or Powerpak) you can use a Sega Mega Drive model 1 AC-adapter (it has 1.2A which should be enough).

Glad it worked. I assume that Nintendo had a standard way of reading controllers, in their dev-manuals, which included reading external controllers for player 1 & 2 (assuming the external controllers was also designed to follow this standard). Japanese third-party developers also followed or made variations of this standard controller reading practise and also designed external controllers and multi-taps that worked with the standard.

Western third-party developers often didn't follow the standard but there are exceptions. I think R.C. Pro-Am II at least reads external controllers even though it wasn't released for Famicom, but it might only work for 2 players.

I'm interested in hearing if you find any games that doesn't work.
