Title: Putting PAL Chipset in Famicom
Post by: MBombchu on December 31, 2014, 02:28:39 pm
Hey Guys,

So i cant stand my toaster anymore, so i thought of getting a toploader nes. Basically a nice idea, only problem is that i already have a famicom and would be using it for my pal games. Of course i would have to av mod it but that would be no problem. But i d like to play my gams with the correct speed, so i got the idea if putting the cpu, ppu and xtal of my toaster in it. Would that work ? My second question is, as the rf modulator probably wont understand the pal signal i d have to av mod it.but would even the av mod work with pal video ? And before anyone mentions it i know ther was a pal toploader in australia but they are unobtainable.

Thanks and a happy bew year !

Happy New Year!

Why it shouldn't work? Only the difference is subcarrier of the sound, so you do AV mod or tune RF unit

Yep. Color is also different. http://www.diffen.com/difference/NTSC_vs_PAL (http://www.diffen.com/difference/NTSC_vs_PAL)

Actually if you are interested I have some sort of Famiclone powerboard with PAL video amplifier and RF box on it. I have to find it from my junkpile and test it first...

So what? PPU output proper videosignal and your TV will sort out colour carrier. All that you need(if you gonna use RF unit) is adjust sound subcarrier, because bandwidth of PAL video is wider to comare with NTSC(Brazil is exception)

Could i also put a socket in there, and solder everything except for VCC , and use a switch to switch between PAL and NTSC ? (Switch between NTSC and PAL CPU, PPU , and XTAL)

Maybe it will work. But you also need to switch between two xtals.

CPU should be universal as I remember from my tests. So you only need two PPUs and two Xtals.
