Title: Contra
Post by: MarioMania on June 20, 2007, 02:15:37 pm
I was looking at the retoware episode on youtube about the differnts between the US & Japanses version...I know the game will run on the NES with a converter

The thing i'm trying to say is, would it work like it was in the Famicom

It should; I don't think the game used any extra sound channels... :-\

Gryzor
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: UglyJoe on June 20, 2007, 02:57:30 pm
Why oh why is it called Gryzor?  The title screen has the kanji 魂斗羅 , which is kon-to-ra, or Contra.  In the arcade version, it even has the katakana below it コントラ , which is ko-n-to-ra.  And yet, for some reason, everyone insists the Japanese version is called Gryzor.  I've never been able to figure out why  ???

I own Contra for Famicom, and the label is as follows:

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but 魂斗羅 would be more like kon-to-ra, when you split the reading of the kanji up in 3 parts.

魂 kon
斗 to
羅 ra

Jug told me a while back that it's Gryzor. I don't have a clue myself. Can we get a second person confirming it's not Gryzor.
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: MarioMania on June 20, 2007, 04:26:49 pm
why is it called Probotector anyways, about Gryzor ask Konami
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: kite200 on June 20, 2007, 05:48:36 pm
manuel earlier in the thread confirms its not gryzor with the pic, and so does satoshi matrix if you can read what he typed, and so does joe.

the characters on the box , manual, and game, say

コ = ko
ン = n
ト = to
ラ = ra

the kanji says the same thing, but the kanji doesnt actually carry a meaning that makes any sense, well i mean it kinda does, but its gibberish to me.

Post by: kite200 on June 20, 2007, 05:50:44 pm
It was edited in the european release, all the enemies became robots, i think they changed the name to get rid of any relation to the iran contra affair, so they changed it for europe. all other countries it is contra, I dont know where this gryzor bullshit comes from. the box says contra for christ sakes!
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: UglyJoe on June 20, 2007, 06:46:58 pm
From what I was able to gather (from looking it up previously), there's three names for it.

There's Contra, as it's known in North America (and Japan!).

There's Probotector, which is the name of the European version that was censored a bit (most notably, Lance and Bill are robots).

Then, there's Gryzor.  As far as I can tell, the Commodore 64 version and the Amstrad CPC version were called Gryzor.

What confuses me is why so many people think the Japanese version is called Gryzor as well.
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: MarioMania on June 20, 2007, 06:52:19 pm
because on ROMnation "Gryzor"  was listed as the Japanese Name...I thought it would be under Contra (J)

Contra came out for the Commodore?! MAN I've gotta check that out!
Title: Re: Contra

also for msx

um, I found the rom under Contra (J) before I had the cart, I think it just depends on who you get it from
Title: Re: Contra

Is the MSX version any worth playing...is the Famicom version better
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: kite200 on June 20, 2007, 09:33:58 pm
msx ports of famicom games tend to suck, even though the msx is a real computer, the famicom is the more powerful system. if you buy the book family computer 1983-1994, there is an interview with hideo kojima where he talks about this, since metal gear was originally released for msx

You're right there. The kanji don't carry a meaning there and were only used phonologically.

魂, which can be read "kon" or also "tamashii" means "spirit" or "soul"
斗 (to) is a measure of volume and approximately 18 liters
羅 (ra) is a type of silk goods and basically means "something thin"

Is it just me, or is Famicom Contra harder than NES contra? It seems like the enemies are more abundant in it.
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: JC on June 23, 2007, 03:25:27 pm
Probably is. Nintendo seemed to think American gamers were pussies...think SMB2.
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: UglyJoe on June 23, 2007, 07:29:06 pm
Actually, Japan thinks Americans are pussies when it comes to RPGs.  Action games, on the other hand, are often made more difficult for the US.

true i played through both contras and the famicom one seemed harder than the nes one.
Title: Re: Contra
Post by: satoshi_matrix on June 23, 2007, 11:36:59 pm
Well, look at Megaman 2. The NES version's Normal Mode is a super easy version of Rockman 2's defult difficulty, which was deemed Hard mode in Megaman 2. Now I'm not bashing the mode at all; its probably a good reason why Megaman 2 became so popular. Not only was it one of the best games on the system, but it was the most accessable. Even beginner or non gamers could play and enjoy it in a way not found on any of the others.

Hey guys!
60 US dollars, or maybe $100+ mint with the konami playing card.

Also the MSX version sucks, but it's rad since it's so different.! Theres no scrolling so the screen changes once you reach the end it, plus it has a bunch of different levels.  However, the play control and animation are quite bad so it ends up being an awesome collectable but low on the gaming rating.

I've beaten it.  After a while, I got really good at the earlier levels.  By the time I got to the last stage, I had a bunch of extra lives and could afford to die a bunch of times.  Haven't beaten Contra Force, though.  It would be such an amazing game if the slowdown weren't so atrocious.

On a 3 in 1, i have contra force (super contra 6) and ive beaten it. I agree with ugly, the slow pace ruins it. I also dont like how when you get hurt, the screen wont scroll.
