Title: Found a really hard to find game!
Post by: Gumpgames on June 03, 2015, 07:56:51 pm
Hi!
I found this cool little Korean store where I live and they had a lot of cool games. Mostly Famicom but in the back they had a few Super ones as well.

Mostly Shin Chan games but I also found a cart of a game called Hong Kong 97. I looked it up for a little bit and this site came up!

Any info on it?

Also I am willing to sell it and post pictures so everyone can see it.

Thanks!

As someone who knows the creator of Hong Kong 97, it was never released on cartridge. Therefore, what you have there must be a bootleg - care to share some images of this?

Oh really? Weird! Yeah I will show it!

The only thing I really know about it is from the few articles online.
Other than that what could you tell me about it?

Wow, that's pretty amazing. First time I've ever seen a cartridge of this game, even though Kurosawa did tell me that bootlegs of it may exist. I wonder when this particular cartridge was made... neat find on your part!

Thanks! They had other weird cartridges that were for the Famicom.

I will take some pictures of it when I go back there!

You probably already discovered it, but Hardcore Gaming 101 did an article (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/hongkong97/hongkong97.htm) on the game.

Neat find - I'd offer to buy it - but I don't want that kind of object in my possession :)

I usually let a lot of stuff  that bothers me go by without commenting but I feel like this is a little too much. please don't take any offense if this truly is a legitimate cart  ::) but in my personal opinion I feel that all the hype that has recently surrounded this game is because of AVGN's review and it's getting out of control. I believe what you have is a well-made repro and I truly don't believe that you live by a little Korean bodega.

^ Urgh, I had forgotten AVGN even covered this game.

To the OP: Any chance you could take a picture of the back of the cartridge?

Can you show us some pictures of the PCB as well? ::)
Oh and congratulations on your find!

Why would the cover states "+ Disk Drive"? It's the exact same cover circulating with the chunli pic (as seen on HG101.net)

I'm dubious.

I'm not sure if what we found is a bootleg or a repro to be honest which is why we came to this site. We were hoping to learn more about the game before we try to sell it since we aren't sure exactly what to list it as. I'm not claiming this is a legit cartridge or anything, we have no idea what it is really. Sorry if this came off to anyone as us trying to damage the integrity of the site or scam anyone. I'm just looking for info and help selling this thing. I can post pictures of the back and the bottom of the board but I dont have the little tool thingy to remove the bolts so I don't know how to post the board. Can anyone help me out with that?

From my experience, Super Famicom bootlegs typically have holes in the bottom of the plastic back, and they don't use the type of screw real SFC games did. (Whereas yours does) So yeah, I'm guessing what you have there is a modern-made bootleg, A.K.A. repro. Bummer.

Old SNES bootlegs also used real screws, etc.  Some had the quality of a legit game...

Really? Admittedly I haven't been in possession of many of them, however I'm still not buying this one. I feel like a gullible ass though, when I first read this thread I just got excited over the possibility of a Hong Kong 97 cart being out there, that I really didn't pay attention to the details / the AVGN video.

Well I have had many with real screws, and the carts seem almost legit like the real mccoy.  That is why when I get SNES / SFC games, I always sell them as gamer's games, and tell the people up front I am not sure if they are boots or real...since some of the SNES fakes are so good, the only way to tell is by opening them up (and I don't have the right screw driver)
