Hi Guys. what I am saying here isn't written in stone..this is just an idea.
I thought it would be fun to have a high score challenge running once a month, I got the idea playing Spartan X (aka Kung Fu)
What I am suggesting is from the 1st of every month, we play a game, with the 1st game being Spartan X. Game A Settings, and i'll make a table of top 5 players. We run the challenge until the 20th of the month, whoever is top on the 20th, is the champion of that game.
When posting you score (no picture necessary, but of course pictures are always nice of famicom!) maybe suggest a game that you would like to see featured as next months high score challenge.
After the 20th, we discuss for a few days what game we can agree on for next month, then with the next week spare, we have a chance to purchase this game (if you're not everdrive (I'm not for e.g) and if you have the game, maybe get practise in.
Obviously, the more we do this, the more we will see what people want to have as the high score challenge...
No rules again on games you suggest..if the game can be completed but with a high score, aka SMB, then why not...it also give some of us the chance to maybe buy a new game and get involved too (my collection is small, so this is a good way to get acquainted with games I might not of played in a while, or ever!)
Voting system now in place here http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=12537.0
Please get involved.
01/01/2016 - Donkey Kong. (Game 3)
1. DahrenDreamcast - 193400
2. KiwiDaveinJapan - 86400
3. DDCecil - 63500
4.
5.
Pac-Man (Fin 20/12/2015) (Game 2)
1. P - 35520
2. DDCecil - 21490
3. Chowder - 21340
4.
5.
Spartan X. Famicom. (Fin 20/11/2015) (Game 1)
1. DahrenDreamcast - 819,650
2. Nightstar699 - 531,910
3. P - 502,250
4. UglyJoe - 405,280
5. Chowder - 251,570
:-)
I love this idea! There are tons of games that would be perfect for this (especially the more difficult ones). With some of the more rare games like the Disk System version of Mario Bros. or Recca, it might be more difficult to organize.
Suggestions:
1. Spelunker
2. Super Mario Bros. 2 (J)
3. Mario Bros./Kaettekita Mario Bros.
4. Gradius
5. Hoshi no Kirby
I like the idea of this too. I also suggest doing games that are super popular and super cheap. We could do games like Donkey Kong Jr, Mario Bros, Pinball, Twinbee, Goonies, Galaga, etc.
I also suggest having prizes. We need prizes to get more people involved. Maybe even spray-painting a game gold and making a special Famicom World Prize cart would be cool. Maybe even a cash prize would be nice! Everyone playing can pitch in $2 and whoever wins gets all the money.
~
I like the idea of this, but i wouldn't add monetary prizes, it's too divisional. I also like the idea of burst gaming. Let's choose, shorter, harder games that are very score focused.
I would say to add a photograph of proof for any scores though, should be no problem in today's day and age) I notice some people do this weekly on instagram with Caravan shooters.
Some title suggestions:
- Spartan X first (was playing this the other day- given it's so hard to finish, a perfect choice!)
- Pac Man
- Dig Dug
- Devil World
- Star Soldier
- Recca as suggested is a perfect fit as well as Blade Buster, but these mean having an Everdrive, a repro, or plenty of cash!

Or, y'know, an emulator. NES emulators run on toasters nowadays.
The compo itself is a nice idea, but it might be worth giving people a chance to vet games before using them in competition. Many old titles, despite having a score counter, really weren't designed with scoreplay in mind. They're unbalanced or easily broken in that regard. You can max out the counter in Super Mario Bros with the 1-up turtle trick, it's more tedious than it is difficult. You'd need additional rules like "first life only" to make the scoreplay meaningful in that game, and those are impossible to enforce.
I'll add popeye for a game further down the line, and ghegs idea of 1man on games such as SMB is great too.
Also, maybe a round of golf in Mario open golf and post your score of that round and what course we play.
I'm sure we will all play with honesty/integrity anyway :-)
We go Live with Spartan X on the 1st :-)
I vote for 1-man run of Ninja Gaiden, or Castlevania 1. But, I'll try my hand at Spartan X for now, definitely.
1 man run at ninja gaiden...wow...that would be some challenge.
I beat the game years ago and I love the game dearly, but, I found it challenging!
I'd love to have another go at the game as its been a while :)

It depends on how far you want to take the authenticity I guess, places like Twin Galaxies demand original hardware to rule out savestates/other forms of cheating (using the emulator to slow the game down etc), and maintain separate scoreboards for things like arcade and MAME. This could arguably exclude playing with repros or pirates, as they could potentially be tampered with to make scoring easier. I'd like to think the fine citizens of FW would be honest and not quite that anal about it :)
Sounds like a good idea, I look forward to joining in :)
I would prefer original hardware (including clones) and Virtual Console where possible, but would rather put emulators aside for now unless there's big demand for it as save states are so easy.

If the competition's working on an honor system, you might as well allow emulators so that more people can join in. Or you need to ban Everdrives too, since ROMs can be hacked for advantage and the Everdrive itself supports Game Genie codes and save states.
I think like a few of us of said, just keep it honest, I think we can all do that here on this lovely forum.
Whilst this might be competitive, Please lets keep it fun :)

Arkanoid is another that could be good, I find that game tough yet addictive! (I haven't played arkanoid 2 as of yet)
...so many choices on the best console ever :)

Could be of interest. World Record for Kung Fu (aka Spartan X)
Just over 3 million. (please note that the score rolls over at a million)
http://www.twingalaxies.com/scores.php?platformid=23
Great idea! I haven't played Spartan X for a good while, it will be nice to shake off the cob webs ;D
I'd love to do a shooter next, like Star Soldier or Hector 87...
May I ask...without anyone giving away any scores...anyone giving it a bit of practise...
I'll join in but don't expect any killer scores from me :)
For me, this is just a good way for us all to play a game together and talk about it as we go.
Yes :) I think the key word here is 'fun' I'm also hoping to get games that aren't on my radar too..i know for a fact of very shy of some good shoot em ups...
I don't actually own Spartan X, but it'll probably be the next game I buy. It looks like a great game and I can't wait to try it.
Oh nice, I think I've got a copy of Spartan X lying around somewhere. If all else fails I can just play a multicart. :) Should we just post a screenshot? I kind of want to do a video on it personally.
Photos are always nice, but a video of a run/playthrough would be brilliant.
Only a week to go :-)
I'll try get a score up soon unless someone else wants to get the ball rolling....
I'm just on the fragile side from a Halloween party last night!
I'll pop in my copy and work some magic later on today.

531,910. Phew. I can safely say that you're a monster at this game, Dahren. I've always loved this game but never really played past loop 3, it gets brutal. We both died at the same stage yet your score was a lot higher than mine, urgh. I was so close to clearing stage 4 but the Magician spawned a moth before dying, and I couldn't outrun it. Shit.
Thank You, Nightstar and good one! :)
We, we both have plenty of time to get a better score in...maybe someone will come along and top us anyway :)
Wow, good job guys! I'm going to practice a bit more so I don't completely humiliate myself when posting a score ;D
noooo, post up scores....its just a bit of fun :)
Yeah don't be shy. I'd love to see what level of play everyone else is at in this game. Plus it's fun to track progress!
A little bit better..705610 :)
I had all 4 men (inc the extra) going into the fourth round. I lost a man on stage 2 of all places...then, 1 on 4.
Got to stage 5 and lost one on 'X' and the last life/man all went wrong and didn't even reach 'X'!
Really enjoying this though :)
Get involved! :)
I tried playing the other day and only made it to level 3... My score was around 60,000 or something. I'm not that good at this game :0
Exact Score...and lets get you on the board :)
Soon maybe we can start suggesting a game again that will get more people involved.....
:)
I just pulled the cart up from my basement. I wasn't sure I had it so I pulled all the purple carts I could find :P
71,840 on my first go. I haven't played this in years. Need waaaay more practice.

Nice one UJ :)
Well played, Joe. Being able to loop Spartan X is no easy feat, the Magician boss gets pretty tough when you have enemies rushing at you...
Thanks, guys. There was a week or so in college where Kung-Fu was the only game I would play. I don't recall why. But I got pretty good at it.
I've never played it for score before, though, so it's fun figuring out how to progress while getting the most points. I didn't know that punching was worth more points than kicking, for example. I still haven't figured out if it's worth it to run down the clock and beat up guys after a boss is cleared, or if the time bonus will end up being more points in the end.
That magician boss, though. I think everything else in the game is pretty consistent. If I die anywhere else it is usually my own fault. I just haven't figured out a reliable method for getting past that guy.
Its the magician boss I fear the most too :)
After the 1st loop, you get the bad guys coming too....I have a technique in my mind, but, it doesn't always work out!
especially as the game kinda freezes as he transforms....

My best run yet...had X down to one hit away on 5th loop and he pulled out 5 fast jump kicks in a row and knocked me down!
Think I was slightly too close! Ah man!

I never used to do this, but now I figured out..it is actually better to defeat enemies whilst running the clock down rather than get the time bonus...
if I'm at the end of the stage with little health...I don't risk it...
Seems fun! I'll join in too! :D
I played a few early Game Overs before finally completing a whole loop, then I died about halfway through the second loop. Need more practice! :)
The pic is just of the attract screen showing my top score: 206630
There now when I posted a bit worse score maybe more people dare to join in.
BTW I was most successful with the magician when I approached him and ducked any spells he shot at me, and then ducked and machine-gun punched his face. If he shoots a low spell (which he often does when you get that close), chances are that your punches will destroy it. But I guess the timing and distance is very important or maybe just dumb luck.
Well Done P :)
This is how I approach the magician, when he is coming towards you, I go forward with a jump kick...if you get your timing right, if he throws high, you will connect with projectile, if he goes low, you jump over it...then you low punch his stomach and repeat and adjust depending on oncoming enemies..
However, this isn't perfect because after a few loops, he seems to throw faster and when you jump kick (my way) a low projectile seems to hit me...(Thomas)
What I have done has worked best for me...but..its far from perfect!..

I have a suggestion for next month, but, I would really rather someone else said as I chose the 1st game.
I was going to say, 3 leader-boards, DK/DK Jnr and DKIII, if that would get more people involved, that would be fun.
For the record...I'm pretty rubbish at all 3!
OK gotta try that strategy next time I play. I always had some trouble pulling off jump kicks though. I guess it's timing-sensitive when you should press B. I guess it's an important move to learn because it can defeat many bosses.
The three Donkey Kongs, Ninja Ryuukenden or Castlevania are all fine by me.
I used to be OK at DK1 since I had that for NES as a kid, but I'm quite rusty now. I'm not very good with DK Jr or DK III though. DK with Pie Factory would be cool but that would probably limit how many that can participate since it requires a flashcart solution, repro or Wii/emulator.

I'm pretty good at DK Jr. That was my first NES game I played as a kid, so I know all the tricks ;) Donkey Kong 3 would actually be a great game to do for a future challenge. I also recommend a game like Balloon Fight or Clu Clu Land. I have been playing those games on my 3DS every time I go to the bathroom for the past few weeks ;)

Some title suggestions:
- Spartan X first (was playing this the other day- given it's so hard to finish, a perfect choice!)
- Pac Man
- Dig Dug
- Devil World
- Star Soldier
I'd love to have an excuse to dig into Star Soldier. Dig Dug (or Dig Dug II) would be fun to play for points, too.
Star Soldier is a game that's been mentioned a few times...I'd like to try that too :)
Ah man...just noticed more posts above...so many great games...looking forward to next months challenge already!
Yeah not three games at once. But all the mentioned games are good IMO. Can't say I'm confident in most of them but I think this is mostly about sharing playing experiences and tricks, and see how high of a score we all can get. :)
Played Spartan X tonight again and tried Dahren's strategy with the magician. Didn't work very well at all. jumping doesn't get me close enough to punch him in the stomach. It only worked once for me and only because I kept hitting his head with my jump kicks so he did the fake-body-replacement-technique and teleporting backwards until he hit the wall and couldn't teleport anymore. My top score this time was only slightly better than yesterday (207360 pts today) so it wasn't worth it taking a photo again.
At least I learned to do proper jump kicks. That problem before was that I always pressed B directly after pressing A. You have to wait until Thomas is fully in the air before pressing B.
Spartan X is a childhood game for me, I kinda have a natural feel for it and my main attack throughout the whole game Is jump kick rather than punch.
I've been playing it on and off (with other games since the challenge started)
I'm looking forward to a new game as I'm not very good at many games and would like to see my own progression with other peoples scores :)
I am a master at tetris though ;D
and I currently don't have a tetris game on famicom, for shame!.....as I was unsure which one to buy...
I consider it a childhood game for me too even though I never owned it (I play it on my Everdrive at the moment). It was a very common game and I borrowed it many times from different friends, and beat it many times. But I don't think I ever tried beating a second loop of the game before.
I've seen speed runners using the jump kick as the most used move in order not to slow down, but it requires very good timing.
I'm OK at Donkey Kong, Pacman, Dig Dug II, Ninja Gaiden, Akumajou Dracula, Tetris and maybe DK III. Bad at Dig Dug, DK Jr (except the G&W version), Clu Clu Land and Balloon Fight. I'm really poor at any scrolling shooter.
I'd like to nominate Xevious, as it's a classic and I played it quite a bit for a shooter (I'm still quite bad though).
Rockman 1 is also fun, but it's scoring system is kind of flawed considering there's no time limit and respwaning enemies, so you could technically max out the score early on by keep defeating respawned enemies.
If you're looking to play a shmup in the Challenge, I'd recommend any of the Twinbee games. Unlike Spartan-X and Xevious they're finite games (so no marathon gaming where eventually you need to play for 2+ hours just to get where you've been before), very easy to survive in but when playing for score you need to apply considerably different (and more difficult) tactics.
Feel the pain of trying to juggle multiple bells at once, only to have them all fall when you catch a bullet that you missed instead.
209520, but no screenshot. Died on the second level, second loop.
It took me ages to get past stage 4, I kept kicking the wizard's head off and wondering why he didn't get hurt ;D
Mr X is the easiest to beat, if you run up to him and crouch when you're in range but before he attacks, you can just keep crouch kicking and he'll stumble in to them until he's dead. It looks like he's trying to jump kick, but it doesn't work for some reason. Bit of a cheap trick, and I don't know if it works on further loops because I can't get that far!

That's what I do. He has managed to break out of it once on me, but it may have been that I wasn't pressing the button fast enough.
Huh, I've never used that strat... I go for the "sneak in, land jump kick, back off, repeat" tactic against X. But I'll try the Chowder/Joe method on later loops today.
Woohoo! 405,280. I broke the 400k barrier!

Mr. X jump kicked me again while I was doing the sweeping thing. Had enough health to survive it, luckily ;D

Wow, good work :D
Good work guys....brilliant :)
I'll update leader-board once my coffee kicks in..
Did some more practice this weekend and I finally beat the second loop for the first time! :D
But only one life left and was done in by the boomerang daddy. Damn knife throwers distracted me!

502250 pts
Anyway the magician showed a new move I had never seen before. He conjured a double of himself behind me and then blasted me with his magic. The fight dragged out longer than normal, because I kept retreating in order to fight back the knife throwers that I didn't want to be dealing with at the same time, so maybe he only does this trick if you wait long enough.
I tried the leg-sweep trick on Mr X but I'm having trouble finding the correct distance (his jump kicks keeps connecting with my chin!). I'm more successful doing like Nightstar (jump kick his head and retreat), but before retreating I try to get a few leg-sweeps in but sometimes that kills me.
Nice Score P :)
My Technique with X is to sweep him for the furthest point away but connecting with him....
He can still get you with jump kicks though....I'm not sure if this is the best way..probably not as I've lost many times to him...
on the flip side...a few quick connects doing it this way and before you know it...he's down..
So, what are we playing next month :)
I vote for a common Nintendo or Namco game. Balloon Fight is a game of great skill ;)
Stupid Magician and Knife Throwers!!!
My Score: 257,920
I bought Spartan X and it came in the mail last week. I still have a ton of practicing to do! ;D
I'd recommend a shooting game for December. Maybe Galaxian or something similar. Gradius would be perfect for a high score challenge.
Well guys..its nearly the 1st! (nice picture and twin famicom btw!) and there is no reason at-all why we still can't play past games and have conversation! but...can someone with some authority say a game and lets do this :)
I would like to suggest Pac Man. It's a unanimously popular simple yet surprisingly strategic game once you actually try racking up score - much like Spartan X.
Gradius while fun, is kind've all over once you lose the first life :)
Either one is OK with me :) You're right about Gradius being over once you die... Pacman is totally fair when you die and start again. Both games are equally easy to get a hold of too.
I finished gradius on one man when I was about 14.....I'm not so sure I could now.
You can finish Gradius one less lives but my point is once you've losta life (and therefore upgtrades) - you might as well reset as you high score attempt is trashed :P
So I think Pac Man is a more accessible choice, at least in terms of high score. Those early arcade games are all about score!
Great I need a reason to get into both those games again, so either is fine by me. OK I vote Pacman too! It's better to start out simple. :pacman:
I had never completed the second loop before in Spartan X, but since we did this challenge it got me motivated to get better on the game. I didn't realize how close I was to Nightstar's score at first.
I think Pacman is better suited since the focus of the game is about score. Gradius is also about beating the game! I vote Pacman.
Pac-Man's a good call. Donkey Kong would be a future contender too. And I'm not pushing for games I'm good at, I suck at everything but beat-em and shoot-em ups :)
Shall we say pac-man then......
Let's do it :)
Pac-Man it is. I'll update 1st page Now. Scores can be submitted from the 1st.

Better score!

346,960 - Got to the third loop Boomerang Boss. Tried to take a picture on the Game Over screen by pausing it, but it just took me back to the title. >:( So I took it during a new game.
EDIT: Didn't know we had until the 20th! Oh well, I'm still proud ;D
Nice score anyway! You had been on the list if you had submitted it earlier.
For Pac-Man I assume Namco's own Pac-Man for Famicom. Tengen's Pac-Man won't support the expansion port and I wanna play Pac-Man with an arcade stick.
Yeah this is Namco version :P
Are there any gameplay differences between the versions?

From what I remember the only differences are the copyright text and the ghost names being translated.
Also, I've been so busy with other things in the last month that I totally forgot about the Spartan X thing :'( I'll totally try to get a score here assuming that I'm allowed to played a pirated version of the game ;)
Pirates are fine but we should really be using the same version - all sorts of code differences in a port that otherwise looks exactly the same :)
Yeah Tengen version is programmed from scratch by different people so there's no way to tell what consequences at will have on the score.
But this isn't really a that serious competition so I think using a pirate of the Namco version is fine. Although there's no telling if the pirate was hacked in some way that affects gameplay.
21340. Good lord, this game is tricky. I need to work on the patterns.
(http://s2.postimg.org/meg3wgeat/pacman.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/meg3wgeat/)
21490 on the version on the CoolBoy 400 in 1 multi (If that's okay - It does list the ghosts in Japanese on the attract screen, so I'm 110% sure it's the Namco version :D):

Updated the scoreboard. Sorry for not getting involved..i'm personally without a pac-man cart.
If anyone in the UK can help out, please send a PM :-)
:)
I also don't have a Pacman at the moment. The next game should be one that everybody has, a game that is stupidly common. Maybe Donkey Kong or DK Jr. ?
I'd vote for DK Or Jnr...I've been really busy and had some work too...I'm suddenly running out of time to get pac-man...
sorry.
Maybe we can even play a game like Super Mario Bros. for score. Even though you typically play just to beat the game, It would be fun to see who gets the best score. That's actually pretty challenging if you don't use warps. I'm not even sure if I can beat it twice in a row, all 32 levels. I kinda consider myself a Super Mario Bros. master, as it is my all time favourite game and I believe it is also a perfect 11 out of 10 masterpiece.
I can beat SMB On 1 life ;D (Without warps)
OK I finaly got to play some Pac-Man and here's my hi-score so far. Bad picture but the hi-score should be discernible:

Okay, Game 2 finished. Well done P and everyone that got involved.
I'll put Donkey Kong Forward for next month..Because, 1 - I have it! and 2, I'm not very good at it..so would be nice to see what others can get up to.
Anyone else want to suggest this..or something else.
I Have ordered pac-man, and i'll see what kind of scores I can get when it arrives.
Merry Christmas Wishes too. :)
Okay Guys, as this has gone a bit quiet and we're coming up for the 1st, as a few of have already said Donkey Kong...
I'm going to make the high score challenge donkey kong! I also have this game, so will get involved..i hope you will too.

Everybody voted for Pac-Man but no one joined in. I had no motivation to improve my score when I was already in the lead from the start. :(
Donkey Kong, great! I'm in as soon as I have time to play it.
I'm assuming the original Famicom version (no cement factory, too bad). PAL NES version is probably fine too (I guess NTSC NES version is identical to the Famicom version).
Yes, sorry P...I couldn't get a pac-man cart in time...
I'll defo join in for DK on the 1st...
and if someone puts in a game I don't have after next months challenge, i'll try be quicker to get the game :)
Let's start these DK scores rolling! 8)
65600 - not too shabby, expect some improvement over the next few days (public holidays mean i can play all day here in J-Land)

Getting closer! ;D
Updated the leader-board earlier :)
Going to have a session at it myself soon....
I'm guessing this is dead now? :'(
It seems grim...
I'm still up for it, I just haven't had a copy of the games aside from Spartan X.
I'd feel more inclined to join in if you picked games that don't devolve into marathoning when played for score. That's boring.
Hell, if you decide to go wild and start time attacks in F-1 Hero or some such, I'd be on that like flies on sugar.
