Controller extension cords for NeoGeo controllers work very well.  I got mine from Tototek, but they seem to be sold out now.

It is the same DB15 standard as PCs, but the expansion port on the Famicom is deeper than most PC ports, so standard cables won't usually work (without some modification).

On my hudson soft fami controller I desoldered the original cord and installed a regular nes cord,so much better now.

Tototek has great cables, just wait a bit, it will usually be back in stock soon.
