Title: Mario in Ludum est
Post by: Jedi Master Baiter on February 09, 2016, 08:49:40 pm
I thought this would be a fun thing to do: can we list every FC game with Mario in it? Including:

Mario Games
Games which star Mario or are part of the Mario franchise

Official Cameos
Games by Nintendo (or licensed by Nintendo) that Mario appears in

Pirates
Unofficial Mario ports / unofficial pirate originals / existing games that hack Mario in

Fan Hacks

I'll start:  Dooly Bravo Land

https://fcgamer.wordpress.com/2014/05/09/fun-with-dooly/

Korean unlicensed original game.  It has bad Mario enemies.

Cool, thanks. Never saw that one before.

Added some examples.

So games that doesn't really have much to do with Mario and just threw Mario in as a main character also counts as part of the Mario franchise? Then I guess games like Wrecking Crew counts.

OK then I'll start with the most obvious ones:

Mario Games:
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr (I guess it's more than a cameo since It stars Mario as the villain and is a sequel to DK)
Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2 (J)
Super Mario USA
Super Mario Bros 3
Dr Mario
Wrecking Crew
Yoshi no Tamago
Yoshi no Cookie

Official Cameos:
Tennis (Mario is referee)

Pirates:
Dianshi Mali (first I could think of, not sure if it counts though, since it's Fortran not Mario?)
Super Mario World
Kart Fighter

What about games like Wario no Mori? It's part of the Mario franchise and have Mario characters, but I'm not sure Mario is in there.

I'll just list off the pirate hacks/originals I can remember:

Kart Fighter
Q Boy (If you press select while the game is paused the main character turns into Mario)
Somari
Super Mario World
World Heroes 2
Ancient and Modern Heros
Mario Fighter III (Street Fighter II (Hummer Team) hack)
Street Fighter VI 16 Peoples (Mario appears in the background on one stage)
Adventure Mario (Adventure Island hack)
Mario 4 (Armadillo hack)
Mario 6 (Tiny Toon Adventures hack)
Mario 7 (The Flintstones hack)
Mario 8 (Don Doko Don 2 hack)
Mario 9 (Adventure Island 2 hack)
Mario 10 (Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu hack)
Mario 11 (Adventure Island 3 hack)
Mario 13 (Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 2 hack)
Mario 14 (Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3 hack)
Mario 16 (Joe & Mac hack)

I'll include those also.

But that makes me wonder... are the list of games hacked with Mario greater than the games not hacked with Mario? :-\ If so, maybe we're working on the wrong list. :P

I'm on the fence with Dianshi Mali. Is that meant to be Mario or was he specifically named Fortran? ??? I mean, there's an 'F' on his hat.

We're sticking to Famicom / NES for now right?  If so then I guess I can add these to the cameo list:

- Pinch Out!
- Mike Tyson's Punch Out!
- Golf
- Golf Japan tour (FDS)
- Golf USA tour (FDS)
- Pinball

Mario's missing for NES would be a full Mario game, even though I wish it wasn't...

Yeah it's a fully licensed game isn't it. And Mario's Time Machine too. Sometimes Nintendo steps really low, licensing their characters out to crap like that.

If we include every little hack that some kid did with pre-made hacking tools it's definitely more. But if we limit the list to unlicensed games that was manufactured and sold on cartridge I don't know.
If hacks that are spread over internet are to be included, I'd suggest to at least put them in their own list. There are tons of them, and more are coming all the time.

Yeah I think it's a pun on Xiao Mali (小瑪俐) which is apparently the name of the type of Taiwanese roulette used in the game. But 瑪俐 (Mali) also how Mario is sometimes written in Chinese. There is a similar game without Mario called Xiao Mali (http://bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Xiao_Ma_Li) written with the same characters.

Officially Mario is actually written with a third character as well 瑪俐歐 (Mǎlì'ōu) or 馬里奧 (Mǎlǐ'ào) according to wikipedia (but in simplified characters) but pirates seems to like Mali (瑪俐) for some reason.

BTW now when I think about it, I think Donkey Kong 3 also should probably be included, since it's part of the Donkey Kong/Mario franchise. Even though Donkey Kong is the only reoccurring character. What do everyone think?

I wouldn't add Donkey Kong 3 - Mario's not in it, and that would be very unfair to Stanley.

There are probably other games that are part of the Mario franchise but that he's not in in any form, besides the thread is 'every [Famicom / Disk System] game with Mario in it' and he's not in the title or artwork...
Title: Re: Mario in Ludum est
Post by: Jedi Master Baiter on February 12, 2016, 06:09:52 am
Okay, I added a separate section for fan hacks.

As per Donkey Kong 3... nope, no Mario, not a Mario game in slightest sense, doesn't even have Mario in it, even though it's set in the Marioverse-- Donkeykongverse, whatever. Same with Wario's Woods. Someone should hack these. :-X

Because there are so many Mario hacks, I changed the thread title to Every Game A Mario in bad latin. :-[

OK that makes things much clearer. Mario needs to appear, and not just characters from the Mario universe. No DK3 or Wario no Mori then.

Looks like Xiao Mali machines often features Mario, so Mali might not be a pun after all, but having been a reference to Mario all along. Xiao means small btw (Dianshi Mali has no Xiao so that's why it's Big Mario I guess), and Dianshi means television (since it's a videogame version of the machine).

I couldn't actually find the correct rom (the one I'm looking for seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth) but I guarantee you that a somewhat modified version of the background here (https://youtu.be/yDZvjlbnqq4?t=54s) is in the game. :'( For the record, Bowser's missing in the other version but Mario's still there.

Yoshi's Cookie is also known as Mario 12.
Other "version" of Mario 14 is a Tiny Toon 2 hack.

Also,
Super Bros. Pocker Mali is a hack of Shin Chan: Ora to Poi Poi hack, just to be precise.
Super Mario & Sonik is a Chip & Dale 2 hack.
I don't know if anyone mentioned M.C.Mario being M.C.Kids hack.

And the following two are unconfirmed by me but they do exist,
Mario Bubble is a Bubble Bobble hack.
Mali Boss is a Hammerin' Harry hack.

Hey Cheetahmen, what about that Street Fighter/Mario Fighter 3 pirate where you can actually fight as a stretched Mario? It's hilarious ;D

I have never seen any evidence suggesting that the guy's name was actually Fortran.  I think that rumor started from this:

"Unused tiles within the game reveal the text "Fortran", assumed to be the name of the strange Mario ripoff. Fortran is one of the earliest programming languages that was "portable", or one that could be used on multiple machines."

So a few unused tiles in the game show the text Fortran, which was also a programming language.  The idea that an F on his hat "proves" his name is Fortran is more than dubious, and imo nothing more than internet hogwash.

As P pointed out, just looking at the name and the culture of those Xiao Mali machines says plenty about this game and its characters.  I actually saw a few of those machines a year or so ago, and I thought they were pretty neat, with some Mario music playing and everything.

Yeah I pointed that out too. Nothing is proved, it's just a theory that he was supposed to be named Fortran. It's still an obvious Mario though.

Well Ossan has Mario's face. As I kid I always thought of player 1 and player 2 in this game as more realistically drawn Mario and Luigi.
It's kind of like Mr EAD in the F-Zero series which is also a reference to Mario in that world.

I found this from a Mario wiki, after doing a quick search (IIRC the Super Mario World guide had some mention of Mario being in Golf):

"In the Western version of the game, the golfer is Mario, though he is not wearing his traditional shirt and overalls.[1] However, he is not the golfer in the Japanese version as the game Captain Rainbow would retcon the golfer's identity as Ossan."

Ugh, retcons.

Okay, reluctantly added. I found the page and it cites Mario Mania Player's Guide without a page number. Any mention in the game's booklet?

I redid the pirate part as a table, it was too condensed and unreadable as a list. I chose to put the name of the hack first then the name of the original game. I also separated the numbered hacks to non-numbered to make it readable (since the numbered hacks do not use "Super Mario X" format for their name).
And imo listing fan hacks is a waste of time because there's an infinity and anyone could make one in one hour and suggest it there.

Great work! ;D

But I've changed the whole point of this thread to document every instance of Mario in every game, that's why I included the based on games first, so It'd be easier for me to go through the list. And for any games that don't have a Mario hack, we're going to make one! :gamer:

It's also a good way for people to find interesting Mario romhacks. ;D I didn't know about the Bomberman one either. ;D This is so much fun.

Anyone wanna help me hack some games? :bub:

Heh I didn't know Mario was in Hogan's Alley. It's the same kind of Mario as Ossan and Mr Ead etc. It's not clear if it's actually him or not, but it's a clear reference to him so I'd count them.
I love these little jokes of Nintendo's.
