If I didn't already have one - I'd snap up that MegaDrive!

One is good, but two is better, right? :P

Thanks for the interest, PMs replied to :)

I genuinely thought about it - but I'm not sure what I'd do with two SMDs... :)

Maybe get it painted?  Someone should grab it though for that price.

I already have a Mega Drive, with the original motherboard no less (version VA0).

I'll see if my one friend wants that NGPC, he's in the States.

Me too, gotta love those early SMDs!

Do you know what motherboard version this Is Chowder and has it had the region free soft-mod?

I haven't opened it up, but it's definitely a later model, so I'm guessing VA7.  People hate the sound on these apparently, but the video quality is great :)  I'll confirm and update the post.  It doesn't have any mods.

Edit: Yep, it's a VA7.  I have another VA7 that's my everyday-gamer, and a VA5.  The VA5 has noticeable rainbow banding on the picture - someone said it was probably due to failing caps, so I wasted half a day recapping it with no change :upsetroll:

It's shocking how plasticky and generally cheap the Megadrive/Genesis consoles feel compared to a SFC.  Nintendo stuff always seems a lot better made to me.

The pictured serial number has 2 as the second character, which means 1992, which is when the VA7 was made.

The early genesis/MD systems were never known for their video quality.

I really don't think you can fault the early JP MegaDrives, they ouput RG straight from stock, so no complaints there.  Composite on may SMD games also actually used deliberately in the design and pixel dithering, to somewhat compensate for the limited colour space.  I like the rainbow waterfalls in Sonic for example :)

The SFC is heavier, but I genuinely think that MegaDrive has stood the test of time longer as a better machine - it feels more unique with a personality all of its own, than the SFC capabilities which now feel a bit like a watered down PS1 sadly, at leat in terms of 2D machines.  Some sounds are better on the SFC but overall the SMD + MCD + 32X can do everything the SFC can but better.  I don't debate that at the time however, the SFC was a clear winner thanks to some clever choices.

There is a difference in the video encoders though, it's not a fault as such, I just think the VA7 looks better.  Totally subjective :)

My comment was solely regarding physical build quality.  The model 1 Megadrives are bulky, hollow feeling chunks of rattly plastic, same with the original 3 button controllers.  The SFC feels of a much higher quality to me.  I find your SFC/PS1 comparison strange...  A tile based graphics console vs a primarily polygon based system - all they have in common is that Sony made the SFC's sound chip :)

Regardless of overall build quality, the Mega Drive has the edge in that it has real power filtering installed. The SNES has almost no power capacitors, which is why so many these days have suffered S-PPU and RAM chip death lately.

A little off topic, but what the hell, it's my thread :)

Is there anything that would beef up the power circuit a little to help mitigate issues?  I'm guessing it's a fundamental design problem.

Yes, it's a problem common to every SNES board revision.

You could put a 220uF 16v cap at the 7805 voltage regulator, positive to the output and negative to ground along with a 1000uF 16v cap in the empty cap socket under the heatsink/RF shield near the 7805 voltage regulator.

I've herd recommendations for adding several small caps to the CPU / PPU circuit area, but I don't know all the details on that.

Looks like there are some minor differences, unless this cap was added by someone:

With the empty C67 spot you mentioned:

Most SNES systems (including mine) don't have the C67 spot filled with a capacitor.

As you can see, the SNES is mostly devoid of caps. That means even tiny power fluctuations can cause detrimental effects to the chips inside. Other game systems of the time had many more capacitors. Although the caps will dry out over time, the advantage is systems like the Genesis, Game Gear and PCE systems have had fewer units lost to chip death in the last 20 years. Over at NintendoAge among others, there have been a lot of reports of dead SNES systems with problems ranging from black screens, broken video modes, B&W video, specific game crashing with any cartridge and graphical corruption.

As for newer systems like the N64 and onward, they don't have as many caps because by then, AC adapters became efficient enough to ensure clean power.
