Title: Spare front label from a non-working system?
Post by: Morbatx on February 21, 2016, 11:52:16 am
I accidentally damaged some of the gold foil on the label of the front of my console while employing the retr0brite method of whitening (I really best myself up over this).

The console itself looks a lot better, but the damaged label detracts from the overall aesthetic, and I'm hoping to be able to replace it --potentially lifted from a non-working console--without having to buy an entirely different system.

Is this something that anyone is able to do?

Non-original, but these seem OK:

Thank you! If all else fails, that could be a reasonable option. Although it does lack a few original details (perhaps inevitably), it could be something to consider.  :)

What's missing, are you after one with the later "FF" logo to the left?

I actually have a couple of busted up Famicoms (both non-FF ones), but I have no idea how easy that sticker would be to get off without creasing/otherwise damaging it.  If you have any suggestions I'll have a look :)

I can also see if I can get a sticker off an old Famicom case for you. I'm not sure how to do it without damaging it too.

Thank you!

Yes, I suppose that's what appeared to be missing. I didn't realize it was exclusive to later models, but that makes sense.

I believe I came across an old thread on here about someone who had a similar idea, and had advice on lifting and reapplying the decal...I'll see if I can find it again and update.

I really appreciate the help.

Update: here's a link to that thread I mentioned

Pro tip: When whitening a Famicom in hydrogen peroxide, put packing tape on top of the gold decal. You can use a knife to cut around the perimeter of the decal to cut off the excess tape. Make sure you put the tape on smooth to prevent bubbles.

I left a Famicom (with the gold decal covered in tape) in a container with hydrogen peroxide for 2 months straight and the decal was fine.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I ever try doing this again. It's too bad I didn't think of that before I went and did it, but at least I won't make the same mistake twice...  :P
