Ummmm.....Awesome!!! I hope they make a Famicom version. I'd rather buy that one. FYI, this is legit and the news came straight from Nintendo.
https://www.engadget.com/2016/07/14/nintendos-classic-mini-is-a-tiny-nes-with-30-games/
I was just about to post this ;D
It's an impressive list of games. I was expecting to see the usual Nintendo pulse-line / black-box titles, but they seem to have gone the extra mile and licensed stuff from other publishers.
I wonder what the hardware will be, though. System-on-a-Chip? Emulator?

Oh, the press release has a lot more info:
http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160714005388/en/ (http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160714005388/en/)
- The controller can be plugged into a Wii Remote and used with the Virtual Console.
- It supports multiple "suspend points" for each game.
I'm going to guess it's not a SoaC because of the suspend points feature (although it wouldn't completely rule it out).
I also was about to post about this. I hope they release a famicom version. Also anyone think it will have AV support?

It's HDMI, so I doubt it.

I've really been putting off upgrading my TV from a CRT maybe this is a sign it's time. Of course I'll still be keeping my CRT.
I just saw this article and thought it was a joke at first! I can't believe it's actually real! :) This is a great value for just $60. That list of 30 games is perfect and I'm also glad that there are 3rd party games on it. The best part is also how the controller is compatible with the Wii and it's only $10!!!!! This plug-n-play console is going to be a hot toy this holiday season because everyone every age is going to want this!
I would really like to see a Famicom version of this, but I think that might not be possible. With a Famicom Mini console, the regular sized controllers wouldn't fit on the mini console's plastic casing. It would be great if Nintendo made a SNES one and then N64 and continue making reproduction retro controllers.
Here's the pic for anyone who hasn't seen it or just can't believe it :0

Now to see whether it's decent quality or not. Still, HDMI out for $60 bucks, not bad...

So, can any kind Famicom World regular friends in the good old US help me order two of these in time for Christmas? :)
I'm really pumped about this. The only thing that sucks is I already own all the games but I think it will be great for travel. I hope this drives the outrageous price of retro games down. hopefully we can go back to the heydays when it was a cheap fun hobby and not the resellers dream world it's become.
Lol I posted it in the main board as well haha (now merged here).
My guess is it's a stripped down Wii in there, running VC (hence the suspend points). So yes I do think we will see SNES versions, maybe even others in time.
GREAT news about the controllers. We know Nintendo already had that functionality working before Wii launch (they showcased them) but only made SFC versions.
Also glad they have done this - the recent price trend and attention things like the Analogue get seems out of proportion and this new NES Mini is welcome.

Interesting theory. I guess the Wii hardware would be pretty cheap, nowadays.
Ha, you know what would be awesome, if the cart door opened to reveal an SD card slot and if the system had built in Wifi. This way you could buy and download new games from their online store, have it save on the SD card, and then bring it to a friend's house to play lol.
They could make their own SD cards with a picture of an NES cartridge on it.
HUUUUUUUGE money maker for Nintendo. This WILL be the hard to find Christmas gift this year.
I saw this on Facebook earlier and it was the best news! How cool is it that Nintendo has finally embraced it's retro heritage fully!
Yay! But yeah I'd also buy a Famicom one obviously if that is announced as well.
Maybe gut the system into a mini Famicom body? :)

UPDATE - not the best news but some answers to early questions:
Will the mini-NES be able to connect to the internet?
No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices.
The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognizable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players.
Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy.
On the same note: does Nintendo plan to sell other NES games for the mini-NES beyond the 30 it comes preloaded with?
No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices.
The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.
Are there plans for other mini-consoles, like a mini-SNES or mini-N64?
We have nothing to announce at this time.
Just because people have been asking: safe to say it can't play old cartridges, right?
Based on the image it looks like an NES cartridge would have around the same width as the entire console. Does it open up at all?
The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.

I'm kind of iffy how small it looks but it's about the same as a PSTV so.. fine. I've got it on pre-order already with a second NES controller for £52. :)
Where from? I'd also like to pre-order one.
I preordered one also, from eb games. I hope the controllers will be compatible with the nx.

From Zavvi and through TCB so got a little cashback which made it cost in total the normal RRP - £49.99 but in this case with a second controller.

The controller port is the same as Wii's CCP so it's possible Nintendo will keep it around, heck, the GameCube controller still lives on. ;D

I saw a similar comment at Ars suggesting the same thing, but with slimmed-down 3DS hardware instead of Wii hardware.
This is really exciting! They chose a great library of games, too, complete with third party titles. I never would have expected them to have Bubble Bobble on this.
I give this thing a month before someone makes a homebrew/hack of it to have the entire NES library. ;D
A really solid list of games there, both well known classics and some very good lesser known titles too. Amazing that it´s 3:rd party games like Final Fantasy and Mega Man 2 too. I won´t buy it though, I have most of the games in some way or another.

That's not the point at all, this is a real Nintendo product. Nintendo is fully aware that collectors will buy this, I plan to own two (one for playing and the other for sealed display).
Uh, I have been doing this (and more) with my Raspberry Pi for like 3 years, why are people going nuts over this?
Quote from: JessicaWolf on July 15, 2016, 12:44:18 pm
Uh, I have been doing this (and more) with my Raspberry Pi for like 3 years, why are people going nuts over this?
Because they want a simple plug-and-play device rather than having to fiddle around with a Raspberry Pi?
Not really excited as I have all of those games on cart already. Still neat to see Nintendo send a nod to its retro gamer fans.
I'm really tired of seeing so many people complaining about this plug-n-play console. Nintendo does something great like this out of the blue and people still complain that there is no internet or way to play more games than the ones built in. This is just meant to be a cheap (and high quality) NES plug-n-play. If you want to be able to get a console that is also cheap and you can add more games, get a Wii.
This is for people who don't have any Nintendo console, or raspberry pi know-how, and just want to buy a console and hook it up right out of the box. For $60, this is a steal! There's also some people who think they should have made a modern plastic casing design. People who want this want the retro look!
I was thinking about how the pricing of a SNES Mini would be like. I think 30 SNES games for $60 would seem too cheap actually, and I think Nintendo would probably just lower the list of games to like 15. Same with an N64 Mini, 30 games for $60 would never happen. That would probably just come with 10.
That list of 30 games is so perfect I couldn't have picked a better selection *for myself*. Wish Contra was on it (but as I understand it, there are issues with the emulation) as well as Tetris, but for like 200 yen per game, it's an unbelievable steal.
As for the "why not just emulate" comments, I'd point out that, yeah, stealing *is* usually cheaper than paying for stuff, but it's not something to brag about in polite company.
I personally have no problem with emulation. I do support companies as well though, and to be honest, nothing can compete with official hardware(unless you count all the added Percs emulation offers, like save states, filters, hd upscaling, cheats, plugins, etc)

Yes, this is an officially produced Nintendo product whereas, the Sega Mega Drive micro-consoles were made by AtGames than Sega themselves for example, so this is a huge step-up where Sega was too lazy.
Also, it's not just $60 in US as that doesn't include the tax sales and stuff, I think.

Would have been better if they included also Mega Man 1 than just Mega Man 2.
Anyway, modders will find a way to add in more NES roms so that's not really a huge issue.
I kind of hope that the games are on a basic ROM chip that can be lifted and allow a cart connector to be put in place, or at least hacked to some degree. I already adore the idea, and as others have said it's got a wonderful selection of titles.

Possibly, but if somebody's hoping and waiting for that, consider that it will no longer be a legal, simple plug 'n play, 100% official Nintendo thing anymore, which is what the product is all about. At that point you really might as well pick up a Raspberry Pi and hook that up instead.
I think people will find a way eventually to put other things on there, but don't expect that overnight by any means.
I don't understand the whole 'just get a Raspberry Pi' though - half the appeal is that it's a cute little official NES...
But then again there are models like this available for the able:
I have a good feeling that this console is going to be an extremely compact Wii board that only plays these 30 NES games in the Virtual Console format. However, the Wii/Wii U Virtual Console NES game emulation is notorious for being darker in color, like this:
I hope the emulation is better!
I don't mind that so much - it's obviously not a serious little retro gaming machine and I think it'll feel quite cheap when it arrives.
I pre-ordered one for Christmas to play with the family at the time and then I might keep it in the office for kicks or just keep it in another room.
really tempted to turn it into a Famicom Mini version though...
Should be cool to see mini Famicom's, it's definitely a possible mod. 3D Printing!
I think there are already case options with the like of BanPresto goodies like the memo pad and MD storage case, but they don't look as small or cute ~
Or you could make a little mini Disk Kun case!

???
i can't tell for all countries, but... for example, in russia you're allowed to use ROM image if you have the original cartridge. so, there're no stealing or any other copyright infringement unless you're emulating the games from cartridges you actually don't have. it's called as 'fair use'
i do personally own more than 300pcs of good games on legit cartridges. it's pretty enough for playing without any stealing in mind.
I just had a little bit of a panic. being a UK customer - do you think the games will be 50hz nonsense? I have a feeling the Virtual Console games are...
If so I need to cancel my pre-order and get a US version on import!
A local (Finnish) store just opened up pre-orders for this. Costs 80 EUR for the system and 20 EUR for an additional controller. :(
On the plus side, they specifically mention that it will have the original US NTSC/60 Hz -versions of the games. Out on November 11th.
They even had the European box to show:
Thanks Ghegs, you can grab it on Amazon if you prefer. I pre-ordered it from GAME in the UK as I know their store manager and trust them to send out on time with care.
I definitely prefer the US version's packaging with those red stripes, but heck I will happily get one to actually play and another to 'store'. I'll make that the US version.
Here's to hoping they make a Japanese Famicom version. For me it's a question of when, rather than if. It's too good not to. They have a bit longer to get the titles right.

Yeah, that would be great. However, i would hope they have a minimal double up with the mini nes selection of games.
Also, English language option for any of the included games. Im sure they would include a final fantasy and dragon's quest on there, along side the zeldas. But, i guess their target market is Japan so we could be out of luck >:(
Or, to include other parts of Asia, they could add the English option 8)
Suppose Nintendo makes a Famicom version with the same number of games, which games will be on it? In my interpretation, Nintendo would like to mirror a Famicom Mini similar to a NES Mini, but with a game selection more targeted towards Japanese tastes.
To help gauge the tastes of the Japanese, I used this list : http://blog.hardcoregaming101.net/2012/02/top-100-famicom-games-as-voted-by.html
I tried to ensure that no more licensees would need to be added I also wanted to keep a good mix of game genres, 1st vs 3rd party, etc.
Here would be my educated guess of what a Famicom Mini would contain :
Akumajou Dracula
Akumajou Densetsu (because no one really liked the FDS version of CV2)
Balloon Fight
Devil World (its a Miyamoto game and fills the Pac-Man hole)
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Downtown Special - Kunio Kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou! (Technos' beat-em-up entry, one of the Kunio games has to be on there)
Dragon Quest 3 (there is no reality where this is left out)
Dr. Mario
Excitebike
Final Fantasy (It's already on there, 3 isn't and 2 is meh)
Famicom Wars
Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi (no room for Gaiden)
Ghosts 'n' Goblins (Makimura)
Gradius
Ice Climber
Kirby's Adventure
Mario Bros
Metroid
Mother
Rockman 2
Pro Yakkyu Family Stadium (The obligatory sports/baseball entry)
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2 (Can't leave a hole here)
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario USA (We are a bit short in the platformer department)
The Legend of Zelda
Tower of Druaga (I fail to see the appeal, but the Japanese love this)
Xevious (Ditto)
Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (Essential even if not the most regarded)
It occurred to me that the NES Classic is lacking Tetris. It's the fifth best selling game on the system according to Wikipedia, you'd think it to be a shoo-in. Then again, it's not on any Virtual Console either and the GB Tetris was actually removed from 3DS' VC last year without any explanation. I'm just going to assume The Tetris Company is power tripping again.
@Great Hierophant
Sounds like a realistic list. Maybe replace Donkey Kong Jr. with Spelunker?

It's because of royalty fees on Tetris games I believe - it is always a limited run as well (like Tetris DS).
I don't think Tetris on NES is good enough though, plus it's synonymous with Gameboy more than NES.
I've heard people say Dr Mario is a better choice and is the better game especially with two players in mind and I agree :)
In terms of a Japanese Famicom list, I think they'd manage with the same list if you swapped out Tecmo Bowl. That's the only game I know I have zero interest in playing - I think it's a very well rounded list otherwise, but then again I'd probably get it even if only Castlevania was on there...
However, imagine if every Famicom Mini title was on there in the original format versions! 8D
Tetris is currently being distributed by EA.
Even if they went the lazy route and only changed out Tecmo Bowl, unless they have a Japanese ROM laying around, they would also have to change out StarTropics.
One game is being distributed by EA yes, but the Tetris company owns and runs the whole thing, licensing out the brand on various titles for periods / runs at a time. Hence why Tetris DS was a limited release.
I forgot about Startropics - so, what equivalent would you switch that with, if you had a choice? I'd probably suggest Shin Megami Tensei or something adventure RPG~ish like that. A super popular franchise too!
I would still be bowled over if Nintendo of Japan released a series like thy dis with the GBA though. One can dream :P
this is better one http://www.daftmike.com/2016/07/NESPi.html 8) :o :star:
I love that they made that, but the 3D printing always looks so ropey :(
Someone on here made an amazing RetroPi in the original Famicom case though - I would love to have that!

I have been strongly considering modding mine to get more games and systems on it - but knowing I can't expect to just buy another if I mess it up is, making me hold out.
Modding is easy and I've never heard of someone messing theirs up, just make sure to make a duplicate of the original system image just in case. I have so many FDS, FC and NES games on mine.
I modded mine. It's ridiculous easy and safe. I just put NES games on it too, nothing else. I love this thing and I hope everyone here was able to get one at retail.

Not bad for 20 bucks... I also saw someone pick one up recently, gut it, and put a Raspberry Pi3 in with USB ports. Not sure how easy that is to do, but I might give it a try!
I managed to snag a Famicom Mini console for $100. The only thing that bothers me with it is those dang short controller cables.
I've looked up solutions I'm not really pleased with - people replacing the built-in ones with Classic Controllers. What I want to do is simply lengthen the controller cables for the stock controllers.
I wonder if I could get away with splicing a USB cable on both ends? USB is four wires, and so is the Famicom Mini controller standard.
Anyone have feedback or suggestions?

What is your opinion on the Famicom Mini stock controllers? I have huge hands, not sure if these would be very comfortable...
I would just replace the entire cord so you could always change it back to stock if needed.
A usb cable should work or if you have any junk controllers you could use that as well.
