Title: FS: My entire collection
Post by: fcgamer on November 08, 2016, 09:20:06 pm
Hi everyone, this is no joke.  You've read it correctly, I will be selling my entire game collection (Famicom, Game Boy, Sega, N64, etc), with few exceptions.

Stay tuned as I update this thread.

Not to get too personal but I hope your reasons for doing this aren't because of hard times or anything. Hope you're doing okay!

think about it for a bit, you might regret it.
if you change your mind later..no amount of cash can bring back the rarities you are about to part with.

Hang in there Dave. And hold onto that collection, you've got something worthwhile there.

Hopefully this isn't because of financial reasons. You and your collection are legendary! If you have to sell them, count me in as a buyer. But if you don't have to, really consider this. It's a big decision.

Sighs. I feel very conflicted at the moment, about everything in life.  I love these old games, and it is an interest of mine to document them, preserve them, write about them, etc.  With that said, a few weeks ago some bad stuff happened in my life (I will not say it publicly, but a few of you that posted here know the story).  No, I am not hard pressed for money, rather due to the previous events it just really got me thinking about life in general, living it to the fullest, and about trying to set my priorities straight.

As some of you know, my older brother has autism.  He is a smart guy, graduated from several universities with several degrees in accounting, finance, etc.  But he sucks socially.  Sometimes I wonder if I have some milder form of his condition, due to getting so obsessed about stuff like a Famicom "full set", collecting numbered games in a series (like the Whirlwind Manu games), etc.  I can fake it a lot, so that if we had met in real life many people would not know it, but I am quite the introvert inside, don't mind spending time by myself, etc.

But a few weeks ago, something happened in my life that made me realize that my priorities are not exactly in order.  There are many more important things than having a large collection of 20+ year old games, and looking back on it, I know that I have spent too much time and energy on this stuff.  Hence why a large part of me wants to sell.

With that said, I hate partial sets.  Again it goes back to those OCD tendencies.  I would rather have all or none of a set (excluding the period when I am gathering / collecting it), rather than a broken set.  Hence wanting to sell all at once, if possible.

While earlier today I felt good about posting this post, tonight I am feeling not good about it.  As I said, wishy-washy.  Even if I sell it, I will still keep my favorites.

Best regards.

Mate everything you have stated there is exactly how I feel about the whole thing, but I personally will find it quite impossible to stop as its a hobby that keeps me out of trouble and gives me excitement every time I hunt down a classic rarity, it gives me something seriously special to look forward to.  Getting into Famicom and retro gaming in general has saved my life and kept me off the drugs, I worry that if I lose interest in its is very special past time I will return back to the OxyContin and end up selling my collection, which is something I don't want to return to.  I'm sorry to hear you've reached a cross roads in your life, where quite righty you have come to the realisation that it's time to weigh up what's important and the life's choices which have to be made, it's important to remember as cool as all this retro entertainment is, that it can certainly get in the way of a lot of important stuff, but as a valued member of the retro gaming society you have given this many years of your valuable time and all the fun you got of it was surely worth it.  Whatever you choose to do, good luck with what's ahead in your life and try not to worry to much about getting too wrapped up in something which you truly enjoy, it's good quality gaming which truly defines us in this day and age - especially when it's one-off rarities that only the hardcore gamer will appreciate and love.  I'm sure you have got many gamers on here thinking about the points that have been made, sorry to hear about the doubts you have about the whole thing, but you certainly make a lot of sense.

I just wanted to chime in and say I'm happy you got off the oxys. I used to have a bad opiate habit and worked up quite a tolerance at one point. An oxy 80 would give me a mild buzz. It's a depressing drug to be addicted to and I applaud you on your strength!

Back on topic again. :p

do what you need to do sir. Was really looking forward to your Famicom book next year, but if life is taking you in a different direction, follow your heart. You only live once :)

Best of luck in whatever you decide!

Sorry to hear that you are troubled. It unfortunately takes tragedy to bring us back to reality and realize what our true priorities are. We all fall in the trap.

RE your collecting, i guess you need to decide for yourself why you are doing it.
Do you actually want to go for a full set, or is it something else driving you to do it, like the thrill of the chase, ocd for the sake of getting a set, clinging on to the past etc.

I definitely agree with everyone for you to think things through carefully before you make decision.  There is no need to rush.  In time, you will figure out what the right answer is.

Good luck.

Still want to do the book guys!  With my computer getting jacked (potentially, trying the rice thing...) it makes it harder to make it through, but I still want to do that.  :)

I'm very conflicted to hear about all of this. You've gone to such lengths to build this collection. I honestly hope you don't make a decision you'd regret.

On the other hand... I would definitely be interested in some of your stuff. I'll have to stay tuned, no matter how busy I am...

i just got into collecting a few famicom games here and there--you're one of the first people i've bought from.  i've had some life-changing events in my life that have certainly given me new perspective.  take plenty of time to reflect before making a decision you might regret.  if you do decide to sell, i'll be interested  :)

Well, looks like I will be selling!  I am feeling a bit overwhelmed right now, so many new changes in my life.  Here are some pics of everything I have for sale:

I'm just not feeling things anymore, regarding collecting these games, and it has been about three weeks later.

You guys can see the mess I have to sort through...

I will still keep some of my favorite pieces (some of the rares, some of the Chinese originals, etc) but I will trim out a lot of the fat I guess.

I hope to put the money towards language study and also towards grad school, towards bettering my life.

Any outstanding transactions, I still will carry them to fruition.  I am not selling everything, just a lot of crappy mahjong games, etc, and refocusing priorities.

I will not take PM requests.  You guys can see the mess, I feel overwhelmed at the notion of selling (though deep down I know now is the right time), and also just the vastness makes this difficult.  I'll probably try to make weekly threads about the stuff for sale.

I hope to sell everything before summer next year, which is when I hope to plan my move...

Post Merge: December 01, 2016, 06:01:36 am

Also, I still want to write that damned book I had been planning.  I'll probably write about the games and then post them in the weekly threads after I am finished.

@Hubz:  I owe you ROM dumps, don't worry, I will get them to you before those items are sold.

God your pictures make me want to scan ALL THE THINGS :) But i understand, honestly trying to scan and preserve a lot of this stuff makes me question it a lot too with how much of my free time it has consumed. I do not blame you! You need to do what is best for you.

As someone new to the hobby, forgive me, but, is this how you've always collected?

I would never be able to collect things if I was unable to take care of them and display them in all their glory in my home. This reminds me a little bit of a hoarder, especially with the emotional attachments/overwhelming emotions you are talking about  :'(  Have you considered therapy at all?

I am looking for a few games as I just got into the Famicom if you really are serious.

Hahahaha, heavens no.  You can search on the forums here and at Nintendo Age and can see some old pictures of my stuff displayed properly.  But I decided to take the stuff out of the glass cases and see how I felt about it not being there, to help me make my decision on selling or not...

Well count me in for grabbing stuff! How much do you think it's all worth? If there's a bunch of really cheap legit games I'll buy 'em in bulk.

Yeah, I definitely have some of those...

I just need to get into a routine.  I still plan to write the book, and then I plan to sell items as I finish those sections.  Stay tuned guys, I'll try to start a thread this weekend or next week, time pending.
