Title: Famicom twin; grey screen
Post by: Famicommo on March 28, 2017, 04:32:34 pm
After receiving the correct power outlet, i've decided to test if my Sharp Famicom Twin system actually works.
The famicom seems to work but..it does have problems when it comes to reading cartridges.
Let me explain; the cartridges, for some reason, once inside the connector are a bit wobbly, making the cartridge disconnect even with a slight touch.

But it doesn't end there, this is where it gets weird;
I have two Dragon Quest games (3 and 4), which for example works ONLY if i slightly insert them in the slot.
I can't push those all the way down, or they won't even show up. I have to slightly insert them, and sometimes i see garbage data on the screen, sometimes it works fine.

But for example, with the Mario Brothers cartridge (the port from the arcade), i have to push the cartridge all the way down to make it work.
And by the way, 95% of my cartridges dont work for some reason; i managed to play DQ3-4, Mario Brothers and a Majong game which i've also had to press down to make it show up correctly.
For the rest of them, all i get is a grey screen, like if there was nothing in the slot.

The problem doesn't seem to be in the board, as the menu for the Famicom Disk System shows up correctly without garbage data in it.
So, i thought it was the connector, right?
I cleaned it up with alchol (using a shirt wrapped around a card) and i've also used compressed air to let the dirt or pieces of paper ecc.. come out of the slot.
..It didn't do anything, as most of my cartridges dont work and those that does still have the same kind of problems.

So, could somebody help me here with this?  :(
What seems to be the problem?
And what should i do?
Also, can the connector be replaced on this console?
May the power outlet be the problem here? (since it's with 7.5V instead of the 7.6V requested)
The pins dont look too rusty or wore out, but i'll post a picture later.

Thank you everyone for reading (i've spent 5 hours trying to make it work, by the way  :'( )

update: some cartridges seems to work after gently pushing on the eject button (without removing the cartridge).
Most of them still doesn't work though..
It's weird

it might be pretty obvious that connector's pins don't maintain proper mechanical contact.

i see the following options:
1) you can bend the pins slightly. one by one.
2) solder new pins. as for the source of pins i think you can find old good PC mothedboard with ISA slots.
3) solder new slot connector. i doubt if good replacement that will last as long as original one is possible to find.

so, i'm up to 1) or 2)

regarging the catrdidges itself, the picture should be opposite. 95% of games should work just fine. the rest could be manufactured by independent third party game publishers (like konami, sunsoft, namco, irem, jaleco, etc) so, they could have slightly "offsized" PCB than ones which were made by nintendo.
