Title: Emulation
Post by: JC on October 08, 2007, 09:46:18 pm
So, as you all know, I'm a noob with this emulation stuff. So, if you can tell me, are there places on the web where you can download Playstation ROMs and the like? All I'm familiar with are NES and Famicom/FDS ROM sites.

For Playstation/Gamecube/Wii/Xbox/etc ISOs, P2P (and specifically Bittorrent) is your friend ;)

Ok...didn't even consider that. But then, how does one go about playing them? Does it have to be through some downloadable program on a computer? Or is there another option?

You'll usually find them in ISO images. You can play the images directly in an emulator (like ePSXe for Playstation, for more powerful systems like PS2/GC/Wii/Xbox/etx forget emulators, today's PCs aren't able to cope with it), or burn the ISO images to CD/DVD with your favorite CD burning software (I recommend imgburn - THE program to burn console ISOs) for playing on your real consoles or emulators. Your consoles may need to be modchipped, or you may need a swap disc to play backups.

A lot of people find pSX (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/) to be a lot easier to use.  You can get some better-looking graphics out of ePSXe (better than an actual Playstation, actually), but finding all the right graphics plugins and settings can be a chore.  pSX tends to "just work".

for roms/isos go to www.mininova.org (http://www.mininova.org)

Hey, I think I might be able to help you out here.

I get all of my plugins from a site called NG Emulation (http://www.ngemu.com/). If you're looking for PlayStation stuff you will want to go here (http://www.ngemu.com/psx).

If you do have any trouble please feel free to send me a message or something, I've been tinkering with emulators for the better part of a decade now. Like someone said previously, the stability of the emulator really depends on system specs and a bit of luck. If you have the patience to play around with it and find what works right for you, you will find that it was worth it in the end.

I got this link from RH.net:
http://bs1.emuxperts.net/?show=indexer&system=ps1 (http://bs1.emuxperts.net/?show=indexer&system=ps1)

Tons of PS1 ISOs.  I swore it'd be a fake site, but the download links that I tried (Valkyrie Profile disc 1+2) actually worked!  Dunno how long it'll be up, though.

I'm looking for Dreamcast ISO links so that I can play once again Sonic Adventure 2, which I do own but lost somewhere in my house :-\ Anybody know a link I could use to download this game without paying for another one again? ???

Try http://bs1.emuxperts.net/?show=indexer&system=dreamcast (http://bs1.emuxperts.net/?show=indexer&system=dreamcast).

Yup, its quite easy to get copied games working on a GC with very little modding, all you really have to do is file away or replace the shell to allow it to psycially accept DVD-Rs.

And a $20 XenoGC or a Freeloader.

sweet I didn't know much about moding the cube until you guys mentioned it. Maybe I'll get into it after I mod my xbox because my cube is just sitting there doing nothing at the moment.

My brothers PC is able to play many PS2 games at full speed with little to no lag at all, and the framerate is fairly constant. Some games like Disgaea actually run faster than they should. His computer is a beast though.

Freeloaders don't accept backups. Just imports. You can use a chip, or use the action replay with an exploit to load homebrew and such. I don't remember all the details, but that is the jist of it.

I found a few threads for emulation, but they were all about a certain emulator or certain OS...
Well now, here's one thread for it all.

Now I had a question about Nestopia...
I'm not sure if I forgot or something happened...but how do I configure my controls?  Whenever I open Nestopia, it's just the emulation screen..I could have sworn there used to be options up at the top..

Any help?

Just buy the games d@##!t  >:(

:P

When I was 13, we didn't have emulation, so clearly you are suffering from a problem with premature emulation  ;)

Well...sorry but..I don't wanna pay thousands of dollars for games that I can play for free... ;)

Even though I already own them of course..because otherwise it would be illegal *looks back and forth*

I must have forgot how to do this over the weekend. ???

Hey dork just go to options and the click on input that's where you can change the controls. I usually only use emulators to make videos for youtube since I don't have a camera....it sucks but the videos come with the games looking better than on my tv. I do agree that emulation doesn't and will never give you the experience as playing the real thing but on the go it's a lifesaver!

Screw Nestopia, get VirtuaNES.

FCE Ultra is by far the best NES emulator.

I use FCEU-X or Mednafen (both for their debugging features and Linux-friendliness).  For accurate emulation, Nintendulator is the way to go.

You obviously don't play pirate ROMs..

You don't understand...when I open Nestopia, there aren't any options...

If anyone has any other emulators to recommend, here's what I'm looking for.

It looks like Mac type stuff, and I dont remember ever seing option tabs in a Macstyle window.

Erm, no...
I got it from the Vista OS X '09 OFFICIAL website...

And no, it still doesn't work :'(

EDIT: Removed all Nestopia stuff from my computer, reinstalled it, now the tabs are back...I don't know what happened exactly, but everything's fine now.

Oh, and I just looked it up.

Had you tried pressing Esc a few times?  That seems to toggle it for me.  The other option is to open the nestopia.xml file and look for <window-menu>no</window-menu>

and replace it with <window-menu>yes</window-menu>

:P  I'm sure with all the smileys you realized my post was a joke for the most part (and use of the term "premature emulation" :P).  I used to download ROMs myself, though for at least NES stuff, I prefer buying the games for my collection before playing them.

Yeah, NES stuff is easier to buy, but I usually get ROMs of Famicom games; to at least try before I buy, you know?

And yes, I realized you were kidding :P

At one point, I had heard about a ROM floating around that was VS. Super Mario Bros in the NES ROM format.  Could this be possible?  I know that some NES emulators have an option to "insert a coin", so I figured it might be possible.  If such a thing exists, I'd really like to put it on a PowerPak.

Anyone know anything about this?

I've put VS games on a powerpak before, & (although some may work) the palette is all wrong, plus, you can't play them because there's no "insert coin" button unless you do this:

I'd like to restart this thread with a question.
How can I move .rom files from my macbook to my PSP?
http://www.amazon.com/10-USB-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000HZZV7K

Is the closest thing I've discovered to what I imagine is necessary.

Ah ok - just attach the correct USB cable, and go the menu to 'USB mode' and it should pop up on your PC screen.  Mine used to detect the card, but now doesn't, weird.

PSP is capable of WIFI connection. Can't you just download the rom straight to your device?
