Haven't tried your first pick but I'll definitely check it out.
As for me, I'm going to try to avoid the mega popular NES classics as much as I can and stick to games you may have never played before. These arn't in any particular oder, just as they come to me.
Rockman 2 (okay, well I tried to stick to Famicom only, but this game is just too good to ignore)
Why: Why not?! Rockman 2 is probably the best game in the Rockman francise. It expanded upon the framework of the first game in every way but didn't add so much it became confusing as a result. The graphics, the music, the challenge and the fun factor all blend together to creatre a pivitial 8-bit gaming experience.
Konami Wai Wai World 2
Why: Much less confusing and much more fun to play than the original Wai Wai World, the second has a much greater pick-up-and-play feel to it. The game is very fun to play though using various reconizeable Konami icons of the day and it's two player mode makes it even more fun to wromp though. The game is really great to look at and it's got a lot of veriety in the stages.
Famicom Wars
Why: Have you ever played a ____Wars game on any Nintendo platform? If you have, you can thank this game for all the fun you've experienced. Though the most primitive game in the series, the game still looks and plays almost identically to the others, even the newest DS version. The menus are in Japanese with a good deal of kanji so you'll need to sort though what options of which, but after a while you'll realize what's what and the game is a blast to loose hours on.
Might Atom (Astroboy)
Why: Based on the 80's anime, the game plays like a beat 'em up cartoon. Astroboy goes though the game collecting coins from baddies while exploring the landscape. To be honest, I can never get that far in it as you die with only one hit, and although you can ifinitely respawn as long as you have points, I eventually loose intrist in it. I'd say the best thing about it is it's titlescreen music, a wonderful 8-bit rendition of the anime's main theme song.
Mother (Earthbound Zero)
Why: Mother is an RPG, so if you're japanese is weak or non-existant, you might want to stay away from this one. However, there are English version ROMs of the North American NES prototype that was fully translated but cancelled at the last minute because of the rising intrist in the SNES. So why check it out? Because its a beautifully rich game with a distinct style and one of the best soundtracks the Famicom ever cranked out.
Devil World
Why: Unreleased in North America simply because it features a blue devil and bibles, Devil World is another notible game by Nintendo master Shigeru Miyamoto. It's basically a Pac-Man clone, but spices things up by moving the screen around and having to force the player, a deformed dragon named Tamagon to move to avoid being crushed. Its defenetly worth playing.
Hi no Tori: Wagaou no Bouken
Why: This is an interesting game by Konami. The player cannot jump very high, but like Solomon's Key, you can create blocks to use as platforms. You can also turn enemies into blocks, but when you do the blocks quickly travel across the ground into a corner at which point they solitify. You have to chase them and catch them before they do in order to replenish your supply of blocks. It's very strange, but its a delight to play. I suggest looking into it.
Youkai Douchuuki
Why: A charming little platformer that provides the player with a sense of price knowing you can kick the crap out of anything that moves with an infininte supply of ping-pong balls. The game's most notible for its music but its still fun to play every now and then.
Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula Kun (Sometimes called Kid Dracula)
Why: What happens when you cross Rockman and Akumajou Dracula? This game, apparently. Unlike the dark and grim settings of the Akumajou series, here its fun and games, lighthearted and cute. The son of Dracula, Alucard, has been chibi-fied and now throws fireballs like Rockman fires his arm canon to bring down the widdle baddies that get in Alucard's way. You pick up new abilities as the game processes, furthering the likeness with the Rockman series. There are even sections of hair rippingly frustrating spike-pits!
City Connection
Why: I know there was an NES version (at least I'm pretty sure there is) but eh, its a Famicom classic anyway. You drive a 1985 Honda City acorss looping stages filled with cops, oil, spikes and satin-possessed cats. Your mission: cover every inch of each stage while remaining in one peice. Oil can spin out the other cars on the road, but it does nothing agaist sudden spikes and that damned evil evil cat. All you need to do is play this one once to realize how great it really is.
I say Satoshi, you have some great taste! ;D Mine are pratically all the same, but I would of added Doki Doki Panic and Kid Icarus. These games are just top notch! :)
Well thanks :D Both of those are disk system games, so they'd count in a top 10 disk system list, but not here in a Famicom list.
Thanks guys (and gals,) this is *exactly* what I was looking for.
Let's see some more lists get up here! ;D
1. SD Hero Soukessen: Taose Aku no Gundan -- the power went out when I was at the final boss! Still haven't beaten it.
2. Recca -- never actually played it, lol, but it sounds amazing!
3. Hino Tori -- newly discovered on my part, and downright cool.
4. Akumajo Special -- a must have for a Castlevania fan.
5. Joy Mech Fight -- best hand-to-hand fighter...maybe the only?
6. Downtown Nekketsu Koushinkyoku: Soreyuke Dai Undoukai -- too fun to beat up your friends (up to 4 players).
7. Super Mario World (pirate original) -- don't expect the real thing.
8. King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch -- a challenge...you'll need to map the worlds because of all the warping you'll do!
9. Soap Panic (unlicensed) -- like Tetris, closer to being Puyo Puyo, but awesome, plus nudity!
10. Gekitotsu!! Yonku Battle -- awesome, but too easy and short. :(
Honorable mentions: Punch-Out!! Special (gold)...the first release of Punch-Out!! (before MTPO) with grammatical mistakes, some different music, and no Dream Bout -- a must only for a true PO fan. Pandmar...an SMB hack, and the best I've seen so far...puts nice twists on a tired game.
I don't own the original version *those go for $200+* but I do own a pirate of Summer Carnival '92.
But let it be known:
Recca is I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E.
Take all the frustration of games like Gradius or Ghost n' Goblins, the gameplay of Ikaruga (well minus the polarity thing) the speed of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the graphics of Thunder Force and this is what you get.
The game is so quick the only way to keep up is to go insane.

Haha I know what you mean that is one of the most incredible games I have ever played.
By the way in case anyone is thinking about adding some reviews to the site, I've got several reviews lined up I'm in the process of just putting the finishing touches on (getting cart shots, pictures etc) and uploading either today or tomorrow.
Reviews include:
Battle City
Binaryland
Rockman
Rockman 2
Summer Carnival '92 - Recca
I just get pirated cart of Summer Carnival '92 - Recca on last Saturday that very lucky!!! This game is very quick move and so very difficult but I think it is a good shooting game. :-*

It is not impossible, I have it, and still not beat it but every game you go further.
It needs strategy of weapon use, charge beam and so... and graphics are not like ThunderForce man! XD but Recca is much more fun to play!, yes!
And much more faster than Sonic3!!! did you reached lev 3 when you go all the level back?! that's speed!!!
look who made a cameo
Nice pirate. :) That's only the second Recca pirate I've seen and only the third I've heard about. It'd be a neat to own a pirate of it, since the real thing costs so much. At least we know they're out there.
HAHAAHHAHA that's the cover of Star Wars Rouge Squadren for the N64! ;D Oh wow. By the way hehaji would you mind telling us where you got the pirate so we can start to look ourselves? I can't get over the art on that cover, Star Wars has almost nothing to do with Recca other than that they both feature ships.
Hehaji lives in Thailand. Enough said, I think.
I lives in Thailand. My pirated Summer Carnival is real Summer canival not Starwar. If you want to see screen shot on my TV and Famicom console when I play it. I 'll post it for you. In my country have many pirated famicom games but now almost of them for sell are multi carts. One game alone are hard to find. I find them at the antique market. Most of Pirated cart label be different the game inside. This topic show my FDS pirated carts collection. :)

I wanna make a list of games that are recommended for the famicom and disk system. Pirates and official carts/disks accepted =)
Just figured I'd get everyone's opinion!
Mario 8 (pirate)
SMB2j
SMB3
Star Force
Joy Mech Fight
Crisis Force
Recca (:P)
Hitler no Fukkatsu
(If you can understand Japanese) Mother
Donkey Kong
Devil World
Dai Meiro
Adventure Island series (2 being my favorite)
That's all I can think about for now, I'll edit this post if I think of more
A nice substitute to all of these would be a PowerPak+converter, and you can do what is mentioned below on original hardware.
MOTHER. Now.
Dammit, too slow! Meh, I still reccommend it, even though it's Japanese. Just get the EB0 ROM.
Binary Land, Challenger, Power Joy (pirate cart), Doraemon.
Binary land is one of my all time favorites. It's about penguins who love each other. It's a lot better than it sounds, I promise. Doraemon is also a lot better than you'd expect.
Power Joy is a pirate cart I found a while ago. It's full of great games like Devil World and Pooyan in their original forms.
-Castlevania series
-Adventure Island 2,3 and 4
-Legendary wings
-Super Mario bros 3
Crisis Force
Star Wars
Akumajou Special: Boku Dracula-kun
Gradius 2
3D Hot Rally
Doki Doki Panic
Holy Diver
Joy Mecha Fight
Antarctic Adventure
There are tons of game recommendation threads. Search "recommendation."
Recca is a tough one, but worth digging up. I got a pirate version too.
My recommendations, in no particular order:
1.Recca
2. Devil World
3. Mighty Final Fight
4. Parodius
5. Splatterhouse
6. Mother
7. Salamander
8.Akumajou Special
9. Sweet Home
10. Galaga
Recca being a crazy shooter, plus nerd cred. Devil World is a fun maze game with things stepped up a bit...very fun. Mighty Final Fight is a fun little side scrolling beat 'em up. Parodius Da!! is just a silly great shooter. Slatterhouse...side scrolling goofy gore action, can't go wrong. Mother, pretty innovative RPG. I recommend either a foreign language faq, learn some Japanese, or get an English ROM. Salamander... HARD shooter, plus the cart is awesome looking. Akumajou Special...Castlevania, Alucard, fun action, decent graphics...'nuff said. Sweet Home....creepy...but still searching for a foreirn language faq for it. Galaga... arcade classic, ported pretty well. Great shooter.

Based on your FW review, I had purchased an SD Hero Soukessen on the 8th and am still waiting for it to get here (not an expensive game at all, so I can't go wrong). Still waiting for my pirate Recca from P-Hax, and based on this thread, I suppose I will be looking to get Hino Tori in the future.
In no particular order:
Yume Pengin Monogatari
Antarctic Adventure
Ninja Ja Ja Maru Kun
Gradius
Clu Clu Land
Dr. Mario
Yoshi's Cookie
Lode Runner
Arkanoid
Nuts & Milk
Top ten, not ordered:
Atlantis no Nazo
SD Gachapon Senshi 2- Capsule Senki
Salamander
Gradius
SMB(obviously)
Mario Bros.
F1 Race
Star Soldier(anything in that series, really)
Akumajo Densetsu
Zelda no Densetsu
Hello Famicom World!
My name is Jeremy, an I am an avid classic game & console collector, and grew up on Nintendo. I recently (and FINALLY!) got my very own Famicom, Disk System, and Super Famicom.. but have no games to play on them :'(
So tell me, for those three systems, what are the best of the best games that were not released in America, and dont require a lot of knowledge of the Japanese language (ie: RPG's that are all Japanese text).
The only games I have ever played were Dragon Ball 3 for the FC, Super Mario Bros 2 for the FDS, and Uchu Race: Astro Go! Go! for SFC. Those games told me I was missing out! I need more!
Crisis Force, Dracula Kun, Doki Doki Panic, Devil World, Namcot Star Wars, Antarctic Adventure, Joy Mecha Fight, Bio Miracle Bokkute Upa just off the top of my head.
I like to play the Wagyan Land series. There's a lot of japanese text to read, but apparently you don't need it because it plays like any other platformer. The required minigames take a couple tries to figure out what's going on, but it's all good fun.
By watching the intro cutscene, it appears that evil space praying-mantises have invaded a world occupied by talking bunnies. The space bunnies ride their UFO to Earth (apparently inhabited by intelligent dinosaurs) and ask you (who was previously showing off your singing skills to your friends) for help. You get on board, ride to their planet and defeat foes by releasing powerful screeches.

Pocket monster, mario 16, super contra 7, hoshi no kirby, master fighter 2, armadillo. A few of my favs
Famicom Games:
Ikki
Armadillo
Yie-Ar Kung Fu
Geppu Maden
Wu Shi Hun
Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti
Kerokerokeroppi no Daibouken 2
Hiryu no Ken II: Dragon no Tsubasa
Don Doko Don, Mario 8! HAR HAR HAR,
If we are just talking about ones that weren't released in America (and don't require Japanese) then just off the top of my head you should definitely get Yume Pengin Monogatari for the Famicom. Its a really fun game. You are a fat penguin trying to lose weight in order to win back your girlfriend. Enemies try to give you food. Kind of a bizarre concept but it works!
Binary Land is a good one. It's also about penguins.
The Doraemon game is also good; very Zelda-ish.
Summer Carnival '92 is the best shoot 'em up ever, but good luck finding that one for less than five hundred dollars.
Hello Kitty World is one of my all time favorites. I don't care what anybody says, it's way better than Balloon Kid.
Hmm try the dragon ball z games as well. They are pretty easy to understand especially part 2 of the Dragon Ball Z series. I beat it back in 98 using nesticle.
Don't listen to the recommendations of bootleg / hack / pirate software, you're better off playing the real deal first.
I second Yume Penguin Monogatari, it's a great platformer.
Here's my suggestions for
Famicom games:
Holy Diver - A good Castlevania clone with Dio as the main character
Wai Wai World 2 - The first game requires a bit of Japanese comprehension, the sequel requires none. A very fast-paced action game with lots of variety.
Spartan X 2 / Kung Fu 2 - Japan only sequel to Kung Fu. Graphics are really impressive in this game.
Lickle - This was released on the NES as Little Samson, but as Little Samson is extremely rare and expensive, seek this out instead. Cute platformer with lots of variety.
Layla - I like this game a lot, weird atmosphere similar to Metroid with shmup bonus levels.
Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti - Famicom spoof of the Splatterhouse games.
Kid Dracula - Cutesy platformer with a young Alucard from Castlevania as the main character.
SD Hero Soukessen - Great side-scroller with characters like Ultraman, Masked Rider, Gundam and Kikaider. Very similar to Wai Wai World 2.
Crisis Force - Barring Summer Carnival Recca, this is the best shooter available on the Famicom, one of Konami's best.
Famicom Disk System:
Nazo Murasame Jo / Mysterious Castle of Murasame - GREAT overhead action game set in feudal Japan with a sci-fi twist, very similar to Zelda.
Ai Senshi Nicol / Love Warrior Nicol - Very cool overhead adventure game in a sci-fi setting, similar to Blaster Master and Startropics.
3D Hot Rally - Very fun official Nintendo racing game with very nice graphics and good music.
Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa - Sidescrolling action game starring baby Upa! Nothing else like it.
Super Famicom
Go Go Ackman! 1 2 3 - The Ackman series is a great platforming series designed by Akira Toriyama of DragonBall fame.
Ganbare Goemon 2 - All the Goemon games are great, but if you're wary of Japanese text, stick with the second game in the series.
Rockman & Forte / Megaman & Bass - Released on the GBA a few years ago, the Super Famicom version is very impressive.
Pop'n Twinbee - The best Twinbee shooter ever made.
Twinbee Rainbow Adventure - A great Twinbee action game spin-off.
Parodius - The classic Konami shooter series makes it's mark on the Super Famicom.
Hope this list helps a bit! :)

Right in the pirates' faces! :D
That's some nice comprehensive list.
I really want to try the Ackman games, but never see them in stores unfortunately.

They tend to be pretty cheap if you can find them. As much as Pink Godzilla is bad-mouthed on this site, I found all three games there and paid less than twenty bucks for all three of them combined.
Aww, i was gonna say spartan x 2! Also, kero kero keropi adventure 2, daiku no gensan, daiku no gen 2, over horizon, gekikotsu yonku battle, kaiketsu yamchamaru, 1 2 and 3, hi no tori, teenage mutant ninja turtles the arcade game, choujin sentai jetman, snow bros, mickey mouse 3, batman, cocoron, mitsume ga tooru, bucky o hare, palamedes 2, panic restaurant, gun nac, ball story, pizza pop, tiny toons, tiny toons 2, hiryu no ken special fighting wars, fighting road, kage, and kabuki quantum fighter. To name a few.
I know they're cheap (saw them online), but I'd like to find them boxed in a store.
Very good lists by Namakubi and Nightstar.
One more that I forgot to mention which I think wasn't released outside Japan (not 100% sure about that) and which is a great game not requiring Japanese language is "Hi no Tori". You will not be disappointed with that one.
If you know a little japanese and can read katakana pretty fast, the first Megami Tensei's pretty fun.

i love clu clu land, and zelda
Lagrange Point and Akumajou Denetsu.
Twinbee - Got me into seeking out famicom games. Still great!
Destiny of an Emperor II - I'm a huge fan of ROTK. Standard RPG format, great story.
Binary Land - Fun puzzle game, great for playing on gameboy sp.
AV Dragon Mahjong (unlicensed) - Not really a mahjong title, but tetris with Mahjong tiles. Theoretically this has 8 bit porn too, although I have played it quite a bit without seeing any!
Thats it so far, just getting started! :)
Ummm Id have to say Joy Mech Fight and Doki Doki Panic
I like Hogan's Alley above all others. Best drinking game, best chill out game and best BTTF game ;)
.... BTTF? ???
