Ah what a great game this is...I still remember the day I got it and me and my brothers and sisters gathered around to play it. It was such an amazing game for its day. This is truly one of the best games of all times!
It's a timeless classic.
You can't beat its presentation in The Wizard...This is still among my favorite games ever because it's got so much going on, from enemies to level themes. And there are always those old tricks you seem to forget about until you pop in the cart after not playing for a while and give it another go.
Yupppp. I love SMB3 so much that I own it several times over:
One copy is my childhood NES cart
One copy is a players choice re-release I bought at a yardsale around the N64 era
One copy is the Famicom original
One copy is a Famicom pirate that is quite humorous as in additon to the pirates removing the copywrite Nintendo info from the title, they also removed the Super Mario Bros. logo, leaving the only thing visible on the titlescreen being the big red 3. Ohhh boy! I'm playing THREE!
Once again as part of Super Mario All Stars on the SNES
And most recently on the Gameboy Advance as Super Mario Advance 4 Super Mario Bros. 3.
Playing SMB3 on the GBM is just so damn appealing for long subway rides.

That was unusually hilarious for some reason.

I have the pirate cart too...I was wondering what 3 was all about...lol!
Everyone seems to know that SMB3 is a good game...somehow.
I find NES games at the oddest tables in the flea market. So, there's like 6 loose NES carts on their table (between the used children's clothes and broken He-Man action figures) and they're priced at $3 a cart. Oh, except for SMB3, that one is like $20.
This has happened at so many different tables. You'd swear these people have no idea what they're even selling. But no matter the table, they always have SMB3 priced way more than the other games. How do they know!?

I think because it's Mario they'll raise the price. I know a lot of people that never played the game but know who the Mario Brothers are. There was this time this old lady was selling SNES carts and she said "all Mario carts 10 dollars each but the rest are 5 dollars each" I could tell that she didn't know anything about it but since it was Mario it was more expensive. It's incredible how many people are familiar with the beloved plumber.
With how many lives does the original game start ?
I have 2 pirates: one starts with 5 lives, the other startrs with 4 lives !
The original NES game starts with 4; my pirate famicom cart starts with 4 also. Not sure about the original famicom game.
I can check later tonight how many lives the official cart starts with when I get home later.
Super Mario 3 is probably one of my top fav Mario games. Every time I play it, it's like a new adventure. There is just soo much to do in it. :)
I think it's the same lives. I could check and let you know tomorrow but I am too lazy right now so I'll leave it up for maximus
Reading this I realized I still don't own the Famicom version of this game. I need to change this! :o
I was just going to say that when my pirate SMB3 gets here, I could sell you my authentic copy for what ever the price of shipping is, but then I remembered you lived in Japan. Japan = expensive shipping.

Gasp!
How is this possible?
It's a must as far as famicom games go.
Can anyone tell me some of the ways SMB3 Famicom version is better than its NES release?
It's on the Famicom.
I thought you would also mention the cart artwork and cases are different colors and shapes, nurd...
:D
Differences:
http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb3_j-e.shtml (http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb3_j-e.shtml)
The biggest difference seems to be that you can take an extra hit in the US version.
How can I tell what version PRG 0 or 1 on my Famicom Cart...
Is there such a thing as two PRG versions of the Japanese SMB3? Maybe only the American version was updated (and AFAIK they've just corrected a spelling error).
From UglyJoe in my SMB3 Thread in the other gaming forum
There are PRG0 and PRG1 roms for the Japanese and US versions
So there's 2 version of SMB3 on the famicom
Oh, cool!
What could the difference be in the Japanese version?
I don't know, prob the same spelling error's..
How can I tell on the Famicom cart it's a PRG0 or PRG1
I love this page: http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb3_lost.shtml
I'm revising this thread
How can I tell on a SMB3j Cart if it's PRG0 or PRG1
Best FC/NES game ever.
Period.
What are the differences between them ?
This is cool, the real sky castle: http://www.nesforums.com/showthread.php?t=4292
That is pretty kewl!
Ha, nice. :D
I think it's not too far fetched to say that one of the designers saw a tower like that and used the idea for the game.
Actually, that design is taken from a Mesopotamian minaret - early European's thought it was the tower of Babel lol..

Also, it would be fair to say that SMB3 is THE BEST game in the world! To date, no game has out sold it. FACT. I actually feel quite priveleged to ahve grown up with this game and the series in egneral. To be at a young age when this launched was better than any game of recent times. I emember just that image of raccoon mario got my pulse racing (I'm afraid it's true) and how my friends and I referred to the tanuki suit as 'bear' who could turn into a statue..
Of course, we thought that was totally random at the time!

I'm almost positive SMB sold more..
The sales figures are difficult to determine since they were both pack-in titles (although SMB1 came bundled for a much longer period than SMB3). I don't think I know anyone who *bought* SMB1. Meanwhile, *everyone* bought SMB3.
I for one WOULD HAVE bought SMB1 if it wasn't packed in.
Yeah! Me too! I can only imagine playing SMB before anyone knew about warps...
Just think if you were the first kid in the city to find out about warps in 1985.. you would be the bomb diggity..or whatever you kids said in the 80's
Quoteor whatever you kids said in the 80's
Rad
I played SMB before anyone knew about warps, well at least anyone I knew. We didn't have the internets back then so if none of your friends didn't know about something, it didn't exist.
That's why you had to show them ::) :P
Or at least tell them to close their eyes..and then when they open them...you'll magically be on World 4
It would have been so awesome to have imported a copy of SMB3 when it came out in Japan. I would have had SMB3 more than a year before everyone else ;D
I can't imagine being one of those that saw The Wizard when it came out and drooled over SMB3. The wait would have killed me.

That would indeed have been awesome. ;D
Unfortunately nowadays importing is nothing special any more.
Now-a-days it's more of a hassle, unless it's a game that hasn't and will never be released in other countries.
Damnit, Doshin the Giant!!! >:(

Hahaha I was only 2 years old when it came out, so I missed out on the agony.
Well, don't forgot the SMB games were never packaged in bundles in Japan as far as I know, so despite it being a small country a shed load were sold there.
I remember this being in the guiness book of records as still the single best selling game of all time, remakes aside even. Technically the first pokemon games sold more (discounting packaging bundles), but I would personally count those as seperate games, it depends.
http://www.gunslot.com/blog/top-twenty-five-25-best-selling-video-games-all-time
they misspelled Pokemon
mod edit: Don't quote the person directly over you with a full quote.
Some of those games don't deserve that number of copies like Dalmations and a few others. I'm surprised the Super Gameboy wasn't on there.
mod edit: Don't quote the person directly over you with a full quote.
I think I was the only person I knew who had a Super GameBoy. Or even cared to have one. I don't think it was that popular, besides it's a hardware accessory not a game.
The Pokemons and Nintendogs count together if it's just a variant of the same game. Pokemon Red/Blue is really the same game. I'm not sure if Yellow is different enough to count as a separate game, but then would Crystal or Emerald be separate games? I dunno. Whatever. The point is Pokemon is friggin huge.
I do find it amazing, that as much as people bag on Nintendo nowadays, that they dominate that list. Most of that list is Mario and Pokemon, with Donkey Kong thrown in there. It's incredible that even WoW is so far down the list, when it seems everyone plays that. And Halo, which is the poster child for "hardcore" gamers barely makes the list.

You could register.
I've never seen a games forum that requires you to register just to view.. that's a bit of a shame.
It's only because we don't want our competitors stealing our codes. A bit asinine and primitive. It does more harm than good because people can't see my database. >:(
Does anyone know how the items in the chests at Toad's House are randomized? Is it defined when you enter it or when you actually choose a particular chest?
Also, at least to me it seems that some Toad's Houses have fixed item placement, like the one in World 2 (where you get the third Warp Whistle) which always gives you a Frog Suit.
I used the rewind feature on Nestopia, and it seems that the items are determined as soon as you enter Toad's House.
Yeah, it looks like the three possible items are determined when you walk in. However, the chests themselves don't correspond to a particular item. You can open a chest, rewind, and open it again and you'll likely get a different item.
They are determined the same way as the cards but with more than 8 combinations possible.
Isn't this a great game ? ;D
My favorite game of all time.
When I got a Twin Famicom, I got Super Mario Bros 3 for Famicom afterwards. I found 2 differences to the european version I've played
over 20 years.
1. When entering a stage, the screen does a quick fade from black in US/EU version but in JP it has the same animation out as in,
I don't know what to call it but I think you know what I mean.
2. When you get hit as Raccoon/Tanooki/Fire/Frog/Hammer Mario, you become small/normal Mario in JP instead of big/Super Mario as in EU/US.
I'd say that also makes the JP version harder than the EU/US one.
Of course there's also japanese text in Toad Houses, king's speeches and Peach letters, but that's to be expected.
Yeah it sure is a great game!

I think this is usually called a screen transition effect.
Also when you get hit in JP when having a suit power up, a transparent suit sprite will be seen falling off Mario. It is strange that they removed this in English versions, but it made it to the English versions of All Star at least.
Here is a list of changes between Japanese and English versions http://themushroomkingdom.net/smb3_j-e.shtml
I'm wondering if Nintendo released 2 version on the Famicom to fix the bugs
Better yet, here's a video:

I remember reading in Tips & Tricks magazine (are they still around?) about a fourth warp whistle on stage 3-9:

To this day, I haven't figured out how to get it to work. It involved going behind the scenery via the white block
(merged with other SMB3 thread)
