Title: Random Mario Hack on no label Famicom Disk?. Any ideas?
Post by: Lakitu on February 11, 2023, 01:51:39 pm
I bought 8 disks on eBay "untested". I've spent the evening tuning my drive to play a few of the tougher ones that didn't load. One of the disks had no label and I've managed to get it to load this evening. Side A had no Nintendo loading text but went into a load of Japanese text with "takumako" and a bunch of other stuff at the top....I could only find one screenshot of it online and no info...Here's a link to the image of what I have on side A...Any info would be appreciated.

Side B was a lot more interesting (to me).It loaded normal Nintendo boot text and then Super Mario loaded, accept the little Mario sprite wasn't Mario and instead was a little ninja looking guy. The game is some sort of Mario hack by all accounts. I'll upload/attach some screenshots (with my phone).I cannot find anything online about it.

Were hacks quite common? Is it something anyone knows anything about? The game is super hard and I've only managed to get a few levels so far as I'm now sat here writing this.

Side B looks like Tonkachi Mario with a additional sprite hack.
Side A is probably the program to write that hack to a disk containing Super Mario Bros, so I would be very careful while using it, as it may corrupt itself.

See here for a video about a similar disk:

Hey!...I think you're exactly right about the Tonkachi Mario with a new sprite. The 1st level is exactly the same. As for side A it's definately something to read/write. I ran it through the Google translate app on my phones camera and it's saying a few things along those line. There's also a format option. I won't mess with any of this as I can't afford the nicer things and have to rely on untested filthy bundles on eBay.

Thanks for the reply.  ;D

Untested filthy bundles are the fun part of FDS collecting, though.
If only they weren't massively expensive most of the time :v

Here is a quick translation:

パターン エディター ジンゴロウ Ver 1.0: Pattern Editor Jingorou Ver 1.0
Produce by Ai Tsuu
そのた: other
Make first half of data 1
Make second half of data 1

Pattern editor sounds like it's an editor that can be used to edit the character patterns used by tiles and sprites.
Avoid using options containing "かく" as that means "write", and of course the disk format option.
It could be a development tool.

Is there any chance of dumping the disk image?

The disk image is on the nets. Search for Jingorou (Japan) (Unl)
