Title: How does the AV Famicom handle sound output over stereo AV cables?
Post by: Josh on February 25, 2008, 10:19:09 am
The AV Famicom can output video and sound over either a standard stereo Nintendo AV cable (yellow, white, and red) or over a mono version of it (yellow and white only).  When sending the output over the stereo cable, how is the sound handled?  Does it create a fake stereo effect?  Does it send the exact same sound over both left and right channels?  Is there any quality or signal loss when compared to using a mono output, or anything else like that?

Also, is there any difference between North American and Japanese Nintendo AV cables?

I think it just outputs the same to both channels - so it's mono.

this is weird. i have an AV famicom, and when I use both of the audio cables it cuts out. When I just one, it works great. I thought i had to have a mono AV cable. I don't even know where to get a Nintendo mono AV cable.  Not that I really need it, because I can just use the stereo and not plug in one channel. It just would be cool to have i guess.

Sounds like something wrong with your cable, since mine works fine with a stereo AV cable.

It could be the TV you're using, too, and not the AV mod. If either one of the audio cables works by itself, I'd first check it on another TV or input device (receiver, VCR, a/v switcher, etc.).
