Mine works fine. The biggest problem people have is if the lens of their Wii is dirty, if you don't smoke and keep your Wii reasonably clean you should have no problems.

Works great for me! I've been suspicious about Nintendo's "dust and smoke" statement though. It almost makes me wonder if some of the drives are defective and this is Nintendo's way of sweeping it under the couch. Oh well, I'm probably just being paranoid.

With the number of Wiis being sold, you'd think we'd have heard about it sooner if there were disk problems. Surely Brawl isn't the Wii's first dual-layer game?

Actually, I believe it is the first.

yuppers it is the first. So there's certainly plenty of room for future game growth...

I stand corrected! I could've sworn Galaxy was, but I've been wrong before.

That's why all those with chipped wii's were so excited about there being ways to compress the game to one disk because it was the first one they were going to have to buy dl dvd's

You can compress videos and audio files to lower bit-rates and such and they should still work.  It's not like zipping the game and burning it to a dvd.

I thought there were stuff like checksums and recompressing would lead to errors.

Dunno.  It's possible, but you can always hack around checksum checks.

Hackers sure know their tricks. Somehow I admire them.  :)

They found a problem in way nintendo authenticated the rsa encrypted data. Nintendo has already fixed the issue in their latest firmware and will activate that firmware with MarioKart (at least most are guessing this--also I'm simplifying things a bit). Hackers think they have a way around this for those who don't upgrade their firmware, but it looks like the nintendo/hacker leapfrog game has begun. Of course, the wii scene still needs hardware modding to run backup disks. Some of the early mod chips are obsolete, and new ones are coming out all the time still. Personally I'm only interested in homebrew on the wii, so I'm not going to be modding my wii. The twilight princess hack is enough for me!
