So you probably read the name of this topic and must've said to yourself,'' WTF?'' And yeah, I must say some games actually scared the shit out of me when I was younger (about 6-7 years old). Remeber the game boy camera? Everytime you went to take a photo, but you couldn't take anymore, or when you went to print something, but the freakin' cable was badly connected to the printer, one of three wierd and creepy faces would appear on the screen. One face was some kind of gene simons guy with devil like music, the other one was this fat ass with weird hair with pitch black eyes and some kind of taunting music, and the last one was...well...gay. But these 3 pictures actually haunted me whenever i played with my game boy camera. I tried to do everything to avoid them so I wouldn't see one of them. And when I saw one...I looked away from my game boy, and yeah i was scared :D Today I look back at these pictures and Im like '' why was i even affraid of that!?'' :D But anyway, did you guys ever got scared by some kind of game when you were younger like me? :)
Doom. At night, with the lights off. And with stereo headphones. Even today it gives me the creeps. But what really scared me off when I was younger was the DSOUCH face in Doom. It's one of the faces shown in the status bar, which due to a programming error only appeared in the strangest of circumstances, and it's horrible. That face will scare me for the rest of my life.
do you have a pic of that face? :)

Mortal Kombat because all of the blood & gore
Tetris.
After playing it for a while, I see it when I close my eyes.
there are 6 rows filled, except for the block all the way to the left.
The only pieces I get after that are all the S shaped ones.
Scary as hell.
That's called The Tetris Effect. I have it too (with some slight variations) and it doesn't scare me at all ^^U. It has to do with the part of your brain that handles Tetris. I also see tetrominoes (Tetris pieces) falling down and stacking on mosaic-like patterns on buildings and stuff.
As a kid I was frightened by the Genesis game Robocop vs the Terminator. The game was just GRAPHIC. That, and Terminator 2 was the scariest movie my young eyes had yet seen. Even now when I look back and play it it still sends chills up my spine.
a short editorial on what I'm talking about can be found here:

Resident evil with the lights off at night. Me and my friend used to play it at night getting scared as hell!

What's it called when you are playing GameBoy and you feel like you're floating?
EDIT: I looked up that thing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect
and I have had everything in between
"People who play tetris for a long time" and "hypnagogic imagery"
I love that game. :P
Resident Evil and Silent Hill for the PlayStation.
The scene from Resident Evil that scared me the most was the corridor on the East side where Dobermans jump through a window as you pass it.
Everything about Silent Hill creeped me out, and still does, but not to the same extent.
I can't say I can recall any scary games because there weren't any in the 80's when I was a youth. However Aliens did get me nervous, when some of my Colonial marines died after being chased by warrior Aliens in the Colony. That game was like the movie.
It's a little cliche, but I was legitimately afraid of Resident Evil 1 for PSX as a kid. I actually had to have one of my older cousins play it while I watched. I couldn't even get through it, I was THAT scared.
Jaws on NES. I used to be terrified of that movie and music. My older brother would make me cry by chasing me around the house screaming the music. He would turn the TV and NES on late and night and blare the music so I would wake up to hearing it. :'(

anyways, I wasn't really scarred by any games, I guess DOOM was about the closest I got to being scarred, but its a good kinda scary. I loved that game and still do. Also Blood is a pretty creepy game. Both are great PC classics :)
There is something like the Tetris effect? WTF?!! Hey, I have that, too sometimes, not only with Tetris, but with other puzzle games also. It's not scaring at all, though.
It is when you are given bad pieces :P that stupid s shaped one over and over :(

There's a Guitar Hero Effect, too. If you look at the bar thing moving, then look at something, like a tall bookshelf, it looks really weird.
I'm horrible at that Guitar Hero. :P :(

Zelda II:The adventure of Link when the game over screen appeared, I was scared of Ganon and his laugh back then so I would always use my game genie to give me infinite lives.
lol me too
If I play lots of DDR or ITG, I see arrows scrolling faintly some times.
I totally forgot about this, but did anyone here play the original Alone in the Dark? Ridiculous. Just...ridiculous.
I did. On the Macintosh. And I agree ;D.
The intro to Fester's Quest used to scare the hell out of me when I was little. I wouldn't even play the game until a few years later, when I was 7. Since then it's actually become one of my fav NES games.

Yeah, that game scared me a bit. I don't know if it was just the Game Over screen, but I'm sure that contributed to it.
Generally, though, it was probably because the game was so different from Zelda I, and the music was kind of freaky. I mean, I was only a few years old, but the game is still kind of freaky to me...Just a little.
Actually, my sister is frightened of Majora's Mask, since the game is so dark and depressing (everyone's going to die in three days, you can't do anything about it, etc.). The music of the game, in general, and insanity of the last hour before the moon falls probably don't help, either...

I played that game in my old perished pentium 1 PC.....it was kinda of a freaky because of all the monsters. I also remember this SNES game I think it's called clock tower that there is this freaky guy with a big pair of scissors coming after you....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
