What is your more preferred system, the SNES or the Sega Genesis? I have to go with the SNES, because I liked the games that it had on it more than the Genesis. While the Genesis had great games in its own right (Sonic Spinball anyone?), the SNES had more fun and addictive games. What are your thoughts?
Ha -- both suck! :P I'm still stuck in the 8-bit era.

But, if you had a choice...:P
Actually, to be honest, I've never played any game on either system -- NEVER. Had one of those handheld Segas at one point. I short of skipped from 8-bit to Playstation. Don't know much about what's between.
Hmm...you need some catching up to do, then... :P
It's a tie for me.
Let us compare the following titles:
1. Castlevania 4 or Castlevania (Dracula X) Versus Castlevania Bloodlines.. I choose Catlevania 4 and Dracula X....
2. Contra III Versus Contra Hard Cops ... I choose Contra III...
3. Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG Versus Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic 3D Blast and all Sonic games for Megadrive.... I choose Super Mario, OF COURSE!!
4. Mortal Kombat I, II, III (SNES) Versus Mortal Kombat I, II, III .. I Choose Mortal Kombat for SNES.
5. Eartworm Jim (SNES) Versus Eartworm Jim (mega drive) ... I choose Megadrive...
Four to one, I think the answers it´s clear... Super Nintendo !! Of Course.... It´s Better!!!
Please post other comparisons and make your conclusion...
Regards
My vote clearly goes to SNES. It is my most beloved system of all times. I like it even more than NES. *dontbeatme*
Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, Final Fantasy IV, V and VI, Dragon Quest V and VI, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Mario Kart, Lufia, Terranigma,... I could go on and on.
The Genesis was a fun console, but I would have to say that I got much more enjoyment out of my SNES throughout the years.
Same here. The Genesis has great addictive games, though.

"Zero Wing" anyone?
IMMA FIRIN' MAH BUMPORRRRR!!! BWAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!
YEAH! SNES IS 10000000000000000000000000000000 TIMES BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only the SNES could have brought us EarthBound.
I had both, so I chose both. Diversity is cool.

Actually, any system with a 16-bit processor
could have brought us EarthBound, it was just Nintendo's SNES that actually did :P
I've only played a Genesis once at a friend's house (Sonic the Hedgehog, woo!) and it was fun, but I guess I'll have to say I like the SNES more by default.
I have both.... But I can't decide, even though I've been able to play them both so much... Voted the 3rd option.

Technically true, but Nintendo had Shigesato Itoi (creator of the MOTHER series), not Sega.
Technically true, but Sega had the secret clone of Shigesato Itoi sold to them in 1968 for $40 million, who was exterminated after the release of MOTHER 2.
Gogarth how can you choose SNES MK with it's lame green blood?
SNES was better in terms of graphics and production values on most aspects but I still think Megadrive had better music and many games we got were more fun than the stuff that appeared on SNES.
In Europe Megadrive had already got a great foothold and was like a super powered PC engine, still simple playability but with arcade graphics. In a way it was the best of both worlds from 8-16 bit for me. But after a while it got tired, SNES had some amazing flagship games like Starfox and after so long megadrive games seemed pants.
I don't think it's always good to compare ports though, as usually whatver is lead platform works better. I think Earthworm Jim is better on MD than on SNES, but SF2 is way better on SNES.
Megadrive had better shooters I thinka nd arcade ports in general as SEGA were strong back then. Though SNES is worth it just for the Mario collection alone in my view. Over in Japan the SFC had many RPGs to be proud of if you like those kind of things. Personally, I think Chrono Trigger is lame and unpolished. A great story doesn't make a great game on it's own if you ask me.
Oh, but did the Genesis have SUPER NOAH'S ARK 3D?? Yeah, didn't think so 8)
No, we got those super amazing 3D stages on Sonic 3 and Sonic + Knuckles!
My Genesis and my SNES sit right next to each other. Their games are stored on the same shelf, and they even share an RF switch. This reflects my feelings toward the two consoles perfectly. They are the Yin and Yang of the sixteen bit genre, equal but opposite halves of one kick-ass whole.
But still, If I had to pick one I'd pick the SNES.
Sub Terranea and Bubba 'n' Stix are great, but they'll never beat KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Manto or Yoshi's Island.
SNES FTW! 8) I seriously can't find lots of great Genesis games for the console compared to the SNES. Here is a list of some of my favorite SNES titles; Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania X, Super Mario Kart, Super Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-stars, Famicom Tantei Club part 2, Mario Paint, Congo's Caper, Joe & Mac and lots more that I can't think of at the moment. What about my favorites for the Sega genesis? Umm lets see.... Sonic 1 2 and 3, Aladdin, Toy Story, The Lion King, Ristar...hmmm... I dunno I just can't see as much good games on the Genesis as on the SNES. :-\ ;D
I think the problem is that there are a lot of good games on the Genesis, they're just hard to notice sometimes. Here's my list of a few of the best Genesis games you've never heard of: (or at least never played.)
Ronald McDonald's Treasureland Adventure. Just going by the title, it sounds like total garbage, right? Wrong. It's M.C. Kids if you played as Ronald and it was ten times better.
Gadget Twins. Sounds vaguely like soft core porn, but is actually an excellent shooter.
Decap Attack. Reminiscent of Doki Doki Panic!, it's based on a Japan-only game about some guy in a turban, they just changed the sprites. Now you're a mummy or something.
Viewpoint. Another great shooter, this one forces a 3D perspective Zaxxon-style. But better.
Toki: Going Ape Spit. Awesome not only because the title is a borderline-obscene pun. Imagine Bonk's Adventure if it was a shooter. And Bonk was an ugly, ugly gorilla.
Strider. Take down communism in a purple one-sie.
Rocket Knight Adventures. You've probably heard of this one, but I bet you've never played it. You should, especially if you like games about possums. It's easily the best possum-based game on the Genesis, beating Awesome Possum by a long shot.
There you have it. I thought they were all pretty good, but maybe I'm just easy to please. You be the judge.
Genesis by far.
I PREFER the SNES, but
I dont really care for either. It's my least favorite "set" of systems.
I agree with nurd, one of the reasons they don't appeal to me is because they came out just before I was born, which makes them not quite retro yet, but they aren't new either.

They're almost 20 years old (hell, the Genesis IS 20) and that's not retro? Gimme a break...
Retro gaming doesn't just mean old, it was a different approach to gaming altogether. The Playstation will never be "retro" or "old school" in the world of gaming imo.
Tell that to me again in ten years.
Look, games are still being made the way they were on the Playstation, it's a "modern" system.
Right, but with advancing technology, won't games eventually be made a different way? Someday (though maybe not in our lifetimes), people could be playing games Tron-style.
Genesis / MD definitely has better shooters. If Recca is your thing then you need to take a look through the below.

Plus Shinobi is too good.
*Cough* Gradius, Parodius *Cough*
No, for better shooters I would go for the saturn
Well..this is Genesis VS. SNES, not Saturn VS. SNES
While on the topic of Sega, does anyone notice that just about all of the Sega consoles are underrated?
You're extremely right (:o) The Dreamcast is awesome, and I've only played the Genesis once...and I loved it. As for the Saturn, I've never played that one, but I bet it would be cool, too.
I really only like the dreamcast.

I think the Genesis version was much more accurate. Though, I agree with all of the other choices. SNES is by and away my favorite system between the two (and I even like the TG-16 better than the Genesis). Genesis had a few good RPGs (Shining Forces and Phantasy Stars) but gets blown away in basically every category.

I had forgotten about the Genesis stranglehold on shooters. That's the one category that it beats the SNES in.
I've played my friends SNES and I own a genesis, so i think my vote goes to genesis
I pick both
I played only the saturn and the Dreamcast... And both only shooters XD
For the saturn Goukijou Parodius or something, and for the dreamcast some shooter with the arcade controller... It was cool, it was not sidescrolling like gradius, but it was forward scrolling XD Like Nanostray on the DS (I like that one too)
My favorite Dreamcast games are Rez, Ikaruga, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic Adventures 1 and 2, and Seaman.
I couldn't possible choose one over the other. Probably if I had to pick and could only keep one it would be the SNES, but that's only b/c it has a ton of games I haven't played yet. Being a huge RPG fan, the SNES is obviously more attractive in that there's way more RPGs, but the Genesis tended to do them differently, and so the experience is always pretty fresh.
The Phantasy Star series featured a technologically advanced civilization and space travel. PSIV introduced first-person driving, which I think was a really interesting addition.
Shadowrun on the Genesis features open-ended, sandbox gameplay before such words were bandied about and well before anyone thought a console could even DO that. There were actually several games on the Genesis that let you play as a total badass (the Road Rash series let you beat a cop over the head with a chain). But Shadowrun let you choose to be good, evil or somewhere inbetween, gave you the option to play any which way you wanted meaning you could beef up and be a tank or focus on magic power or deck yourself out in cybernetics... or just about any combination you wanted. You could spend your time doing runs or following the story, or neither.
Landstalker was considered by some to be a Zelda clone, but I think it really focused on the puzzles a bit more. Probably not the most innovative game, but it was certainly fun!
Shining Force I & II - well the SNES really didn't get any strategy-RPGs in the US and I don't think any of the import titles are as great as these two games. (I know we got Ogre Battle, that's more of a strategy game to me tho.)
Shining in the Darkness is another great one, much better than the closest analog on the SNES, Arcana.
i really cant choose one over the other. MKI II and III for the sega genesis are by far better than the SNES ports. but SF2 is better on SNES. alot of good games came out for both. the only thing that makes me mad is that there is no saving ability on the sega genesis. let alone any RPGs to save. they only came out with saving when the segaCD came out (SONICCD FTW!).i love that game. ::)
There is saving on the Genesis, ever played Sonic 3?
And Phantasy Star.... and all the other RPGs.
haha only sonic game i dont have is sonic 3 lol. and phantasy star 1 only came out in japan.
I think he means Phantasy Star II-IV, they all have save features built in. Most of the Genesis RPGs had save features. In fact, I'm kinda drawing a blank as to which ones didn't.
i'd go for Nintendo coz it has street fighter, final fantasy, megaman x...
but SNES that time is so expensive in our place. MegaDrive = 2k+ , SNES = 4k+ :o :o :o
I love both ! I can't pick! Although back in the early 90s I was a Nintendo fanboy....ugh....
I was always a Nintendo fanboy, simply because there wasn't a single store that sold Sega stuff in my town.
I only knew Sega from video game magazines.
Nowadays I buy what I can get, regardless of who made it. (As long as it's good)
sega genesis all the way sonic beats all snes games........at least most of them
I don't think the sonic games for genesis are really any fun.
The dreamcast ones are really good though IMO.
sonic cd is quite possibly the best sidescrolling sonic game IMO. I dont prefer one over the other they both have a plethora of good games.
I like the sega genesis but SNES is much better thought. but get a model 1 genesis! model 2 sucks.
It does not suck. It's just not as cool.
That being said, I don't even like the genesis very much.

Gonna have to disagree here. I found Sonic 3 & Knuckles to be the best Sonic game out of them all, mostly due to the fact you have a bunch more levels, harder emerald challenges, you can play as Knuckles, different endings, different bosses depending on who you play as, alternate paths, more power ups, pretty much everything you'd imagine.
Sonic CD for me just felt so...eh. The level design is what really turned me off about it. I found myself always trying to go back to the past then when I'm about to, a random piece of land that's sticking up for no reason just stops my momentum and pow, there goes all that effort wasted. Don't get me wrong, it had some great music, introduced Metal Sonic and Amy, so it gets props for that. But overall the game just felt so rushed.
I think Sega MegaDrive is better, because I have played it more than Super NES and Sonic is faaaaaast....much faster than Mario. But I just love MegaDrive games. Sure Super NES have cool games too, but there is something they don't have...I'm not sure what it is, Blast Processing?
I think Sonic 2 is my favorite Sonic game.
