Title: xbox softmodding
Post by: satoshi_matrix on May 20, 2008, 05:12:40 pm
I've bought an original Xbox and I'm planning to softmod it. I've ordered a action replay to transfer the saves so while I wait for it to arrive, I want to learn all I can about the process.

Does anyone have any experience/advice softmodding the original  xbox? Any help is appricated.

Don't use any of the original methods.

Get all of your files off xbins

MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR files (an option of the softmod)

Don't mess with things once they are working. :P I had my XBOX modded and I decided to edit the dash a bit (I use UIX) and in the process corrupted the files on the hard drive. It's easier to do than you think.

They also sell a memory card with already all the files needed. It's a little expensive though...

I'd actually like a link too. It seems to me that selling things like this would be illegal.

That's weird. I just modded my friend's xbox yesterday. But we did hotswapping instead.

I'm also going to upgrade the hard drive to a 20gb I found laying around.

Hotswapping seems like a more risky method. What are the pros to using that method over a softmod?

Well I checked ebay and I can't seem to find those memory cards. I was in the process of moding my xbox until I found out that my brother threw out the 20 gig hd I was going to try and install on it.....I just felt depressed and let it go lol

You do know you can't just swap drives, right? There is much more to it. They need to be formatted and have all the files loaded onto it.

I'm just making sure. The last thing I want is for someone to possibly screw up such a customizable system. :)

I personally use ZSnesBOX. It runs every rom I've ever used on it near perfectly. The newest version should be fine.

FF, google xbox softmodding. You should be able to figure out what to do by reading a bunch of tutorials. Thats what I did.

Maxximus, another question. Where do you find emulators for xbox? You'd think they'd be open source, but they are hard as hell to locate, espically up to date versions.

I'm looking for

something that will play Sega CD isos well
the best NES emu
the best N64 emu
the best PSX emu

any help is appricated.

They are open source, but compiled with an illegaly obtained xbox SDK, so they can't be distributed.

Use XBINS. Just google it to find out. :P
