Title: E3
Post by: PatMan33 on July 14, 2008, 12:10:27 pm
Hey, it's that time of year again! Time for the E3 expo and time for us gamers to get all sorts of new info!

Microsoft's press conference just wrapped up and it was somewhat dull. They announced their new Avatar system (Miis) and also showed some pretty sweet footage of Gears of War 2. It looks like they're really pushing the casual side of things but it comes off as too little too late, at least to me.

Probably the biggest announcement was that Final Fantasy XIII will be coming out on the 360. That's going to cause a bit of an upset I think. Anyway, I'll be throwing stuff into the topic that I find interesting and hopefully everyone else will do the same! Despite the lack of attendance this year it's looking pretty good.

XIII on the 360! I must look further into this! This is huge news to me.

EDIT: I think I may still get it for PS3. I would feel weird playing it on 360. There's just something special about playing Final Fantasy on a Playstation.

Also, Gears 2 looked phenomenal. I'm excited for Fable II as well.

That's just self-deception. The machine doesn't matter as long as the rest is ok. And that comes from a die-hard Nintendo-fan. ;)

And now Nintendo is the only one without a proper Final Fantasy game on it. Never thought I'd see that. :P

I can live with that.
I'm more a Dragon Quest guy than a Final Fantasy guy.

I don't think so. By no means am I upset (like many other fanboys) that 360 owners are getting the chance to experience an awesome game. It's just for me, I am so used to playing Final Fantasy on Playstation (excluding I-VI) that it comforts me to do so. I started with VII so it's more of the software coexisting with the hardware I know that I enjoy.  :)

Nintendo's press conference was kind of a let down in my eyes. The high points for me were Animal Crossing and the Wii Sports Resort Bokken sword fighting. I was hoping for some announcement of maybe a Kid Icarus, but then again they never announced that was actually in development.

Wow, Sony didn't have that many wow moments in their press conference. God of War III and Little Big Planet were nice to see, but where were the Square goods? Too bad. Looks like Microsoft had the best showing in my opinion. Gears of War 2 was a treat to watch in action.

I've got this issue with Little Big Planet... The presentation they had today was fantastic, the LBP world they used during the speech was amazing; however, are us normal people going to be able to make stuff like that? It seems a lot like Garry's Mod to me. There are going to be about... four people that can do it well and everyone else makes crap and gets bored with it.

Animal Crossing Wii, eh?
I'd like to see more footage before I think of it.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Kuvio on July 15, 2008, 06:53:44 pm
Yeah Animal Crossing: City Folk it's called. It looks very well done. It will use the new Wii Speak so you can talk to other people in various towns across the world. The Wii Speak attaches to your sensor bar (likely so parents can hear what their kids are saying online!) You can even invite your friends to your town or go to theirs. Then you can compete, do various tasks together, or just hang out. Their is also a new city that you can visit besides your town, hence the name. Another cool thing is that you can obtain a "mask" in the game that makes your character look like your Mii.

Fable II looked phenomenal as well. I love that you can travel to other people's worlds (seems like everyone's doing that now huh?). What's different about that aspect is when you are playing your normal adventure, you will see these orbs of light floating around in which signifies where you friends are in Albion. When you interact with them you can invite them to your world instantaneously.

I'm on the fence with Fable II... Peter Molyneux has incurred the wrath of Pat in the past and so he's on notice. Chances are I'll get it though because I liked the first, regardless of the lies. :P

Animal Crossing looks good, I just hope that they add some new stuff to it. Wild World got boring much faster than the first one because there wasn't anything new to do.

Anyone own stock in Nintendo? They're going to sell an assload of Wii Music games.

Whoa, did anyone see the new Prince of Persia!? It blew my mind when I saw it. It's an entirely new prince with a new sidekick, and with awesome cel shaded graphics. He looked so awesome, like an Arabian version of Ryu Hayabusa. The gameplay looked so fluid too.

Yeah.

I just hope that they are able to update other games, like Smash Bros and Mario Kart, to be able to work with the microphone.

They should enable you to play your Virtual Console games inside Animal Crossing. Or put up an arcade machine at Tom Nook's that let's you play demos and stuff.

I saw that in addition to the user creative content, there is also a story mode that is already built in the game. If you go through the story you unlock many things you can use in the custom creation mode. It seems they don't want you to start building levels with nothing to go by. I like that they did that.

Who's going to watch what and what are you expecting to hear from each of the big three?

I'm watching Microsoft today only for is they have anything on some "magic wand" controller and if they have more clips of Final Fantasy 13 (would be nice but not expecting it). I never liked playing the Final Fantasy games but the cutscenes are really cool.

Tomorrow I'm watching Nintendo with some of my friends who do not have G4. I'm expecting more from them than anyone else because I have good ideas of what may be at the conference:
1) Mario and Luigi RPG 3 for the DS (it was already out in Japan so maybe it'll make it here for the holidays?) and more talk on the new DS Zelda... will they change the title?
2) More about the Nintendo DSi but I'm interested in an experiment they announced last year. Where people can use their DS to find things like a baggage claim after landing in an airport. Would be nice to hear how those experiments went.
3) Maybe more on the Wii motion plus, but they talked about a great deal last year so I don't know.
4) Now these are based on rumors from my friends who might as well have a second home on the internet. Supposedly they know of a new Mario game coming out for wii, but both of them said two different games. Ian (who will be over tomorrow) says Super Mario Galaxy 2. Mackey (my bass player who will be in school) says Super Mario Bros. 5. Now some people responded to that rumor and said it would be Super Mario Bros. 4, but it isn't true because SMB4 is SMW.

I'm not gonna watch sony but for their sake, it might be smart to do a price drop on their ps3. And I'm also going to watch the live Donkey Kong record attempt. I'll also be watching G4's E3 coverage for the sweet previews and whatnot since I'll be home.

That's all I'm expecting from those guys but I'm sure there will be more that will surprise me, and I hope it does.

I need to watch nintendo for the site O_o I hope a new F-Zero, Starfox or any of those forgotten series. I think a new new (XD) super mario bros. Not a console mario, thats WAY to fast!
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Rob64 on June 01, 2009, 04:50:29 am
It does seem a bit fast but maybe they made it top priority since one of the issues they had for a while was games for the hardcore nintendo player. A wii Star fox or F zero would be sweet, or even DS. If you are watching it for the site, watch it from g4's website since supposedly what we get on tv is edited...?

I'm a Nintendo man myself and they always put on a good show; however, I want to hear more about the FFVII remake rumor because I'll definitely buy a PS3 if they remake it.

Interested in Microsoft too though... they need more of a kick than the other two.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Rob64 on June 01, 2009, 06:11:36 am
Actually I was thinking Sony needed a kick more than anyone else... or maybe they both need a kick. I'm not worried about Nintendo, but I'm interested in seeing what will happen and what Miyamoto is going to present.

I'll read about it on joystiq and kotaku. I don't have time to watch video streams (stupid time zones...).

Basically I expect nothing. This way I can't be disappointed and great news feel really great.  :P

I hope for a nice DVD with E3 footage on the next issue of Famitsu. :)

Post by: UglyJoe on June 01, 2009, 10:08:24 am
A couple years ago, the event organizers decided they wanted a more "professional" vibe for E3.  So, they removed all the spectacle from it -- the show tanked.  This year, they've added the spectacle back into it, hoping it will make E3 relevant again.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Blue Protoman on June 01, 2009, 10:10:08 am
I'm more interested in announcements than E3 itself.  After E3, I search around for news of new game announcements or info.  Maybe Nintendo will reveal the American release date for WarioWare: Myself.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: PatMan33 on June 01, 2009, 12:23:08 pm
Microsoft's conference was interesting. They got Metal Gear and Left 4 Dead 2. There was some interesting Alan Wake info. Of course they had Halo (two different flavors) and a bunch of other stuff that I really didn't care about (Modern Warfare 2).

The big announcement was supposed to be Natal, a camera system that makes you the controller for the game. I think the reception was good but could have been better. Their demos were okay but I don't think it will be a major hit since they have to build an entirely new install base. Also the guy that is developing it (his name is Kudo) is a total tool.

Overall I give them a B-.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Rob64 on June 01, 2009, 02:48:34 pm
I just thought they had too many shooters to where it was all the same. I like rock band, and project natal seems interesting but not appealing. But i did like Peter Molyneux's video with it.

Overall, C
Title: Re: E3
Post by: UglyJoe on June 01, 2009, 03:00:49 pm
Natal has potential.  As a human-computer interface device it's very impressive, but I really don't see how it'll sell video games.  It reminds me of Microsoft's constant touting of multi-touch screen devices (see Microsoft Surface).  It's cool and very forward-thinking, but nobody really wants it or has a use for it (yet).
Title: Re: E3
Post by: nintendodork on June 01, 2009, 03:02:56 pm
I didn't watch anything on E3, but...from what you're saying..Natal sounds like a Microsoft (expensive) version of the EyeToy?
Title: Re: E3
Post by: UglyJoe on June 01, 2009, 03:09:11 pm
It's more advanced than the Eyetoy because it can detect how near/far you are to it.  Personally, though, I don't see it fairing any better.

Which is a shame, because the Eyetoy games that I've played were generally pretty fun (if not short-lived...kinda like most Wii mini-games).
Title: Re: E3
Post by: PatMan33 on June 01, 2009, 03:24:56 pm
The EA conference was interesting. Nothing mega noteworthy aside from Mass Effect 2 and Brutal Legend... both of which look AWESOME! I don't really care for MMOs so you'll have to ask someone else about the Star Wars Old Republic game. The video was cool though.

The tennis game they're releasing for Wii looks good too and it uses Motion Plus.

**EDIT**
Just saw Ubisoft's press conference. It was long...

Assassin's Creed 2 looks decent, Katamari Raving Rabbids looks alright, Ubisoft is releasing a camera that is strangely similar to Microsoft's new Natal camera... except it's for the Wii. The new Splinter Cell still makes me want to play Thief. James Cameron and Pele talked for about 45 minutes and it wasn't all in English.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Rob64 on June 01, 2009, 07:41:06 pm
I unfortunately didn't watch the other 2 conferences so I can really only talk about Microsoft.

It may be a bad analogy but Microsoft seems to being doing to the 360 what Sega did to the Genesis. They piled a lot of unnecessary features into their xbox live feature expecting to make money.

Their netflix announcement for example, not much different from the announcement last year. And facebook and twitter on there screams dumb for me. I think the icing on that cake is their idea of instead of watching netflix with your friend in the same room, they would watch it at the same time via xbox live... WTF! I know it can be nice to have in certain situations but for everyday use, really?

The conference started great but seemed to have gone downhill after the demo for FFXIII. It was great seeing Tony Hawk, Yoko Ono, George Harrison's wife and son, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr have their chance on stage. I bet it would be cool if all of them were alive that they would play the demo with the rock band instruments.

I like Tony Hawk Ride, but the skateboard controller seems to have been meaningless when you saw the video demonstrating project natal where he's playing a skateboard game. That moment made the new controller idea worthless and kind of contradicting if you remember what the president was talking about in his speech.

I still stand by the grade I gave their conference. It had a very strong start, but it went downhill after the third or fourth shooter game. It was like we were getting the same game in different time periods or different places.

Can't wait for Nintendo tomorrow and to see Steve Weibe. I won't watch Sony, but I am expecting them to do a price drop on the ps3, so if anyone can do a summary of that, that would be sweet.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: nintendodork on June 01, 2009, 07:46:14 pm
I saw Tony Hawk talking about THR on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon, and he made it sound awesome on the Wii.  They were talking about how it was different from the Balance Board, but I don't think it'll be that great.
Title: Re: E3
Post by: Rob64 on June 01, 2009, 07:51:16 pm
Neither do I, but the concept was neat when it was talked about at Microsofts E3... until project natal made it sound worthless.

I stopped playing Tony Hawk at American Wasteland. But thanks to my xbox being wierd and unreliable, I can only play THPS 1 and 2.

You gonna watch Nintendo? I wanna hear what they have to say about the experiment they announced last year.

Microsoft had a nice E3 conference. I didn't paid much attention to their shooters but FFXIII got me thinking! The new TH game is blah(I stopped playing the games after AW) and haven't been interested in the games even after this. I think I rather skate outside! Lets see what else, oh the natal thing was interesting but we'll have to see where it goes. Metal Gear will surely make some people want a 360 as well but that's about it. I can't wait to see what Nintendo has for us tomorrow.

Also, Nintendo's conference is in about five hours (9PDT and 12EST). Sony is two hours after that.

I watch the conferences on some of the gaming websites. This year the best places to go (at least for me) have been GameSpot and GameTrailers. For the Nintendo conference (which is starting SOON) you can try here (http://e3.gamespot.com/press-conference/nintendo-e3/?tag=topslot;img;1) or here (http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/video-press-conference/nintendo).

Make sure you disable programs like adblock so that the feed (with it's advertisements) can get through. ;)

I enjoyed Nintendo's conference. The two new Mario games (New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Mario Galaxy 2) look pretty solid. The Golden Sun DS announcement was fantastic and gives me a reason to finish the earlier games. Zelda: Spirit Tracks was mentioned and so was Conduit and Red Steel 2 (there were others but I remember these) and they appear to be coming along nicely. They have a Wii Vitality thing in the works (it's basically one of those heart rate monitors that you stick your finger in) and I'm sure it will sell a bunch but I'm not sure how well it will do... at least in the Western markets. A new Final Fantasy game was announced that uses Wii Motion Plus and it looks alright (by the way, Motion Plus is bundled with Wii Sports Resort and Red Steel 2).

The game that stole the show though was Metroid: Other M. Looks like it'll be a story-driven Metroid game with the focus on Samus and her life/past/whatever. Definitely looking forward to that.

Overall I'd give Nintendo a B-. They had a lot of great stuff but didn't really do much to top Microsoft's performance; however, I think they were able to hold their own against the Natal announcement and therefore we have a tie.

Alright, that's Sony's presentation over and done with. They had some interesting stuff. Most of it was multiplatform stuff though so I'm not gonna bother with it. The PSP Go! was officially announced. It is supposed to play all kinds of digitally distributed games and is not meant to succeed the PSP 3000. Your UMD games will not work in it but they say there will be plenty of games available for the system. Dunno, something's gotta give somewhere. Sony also announced their motion control thingy. It's pretty cool, seems to be landing somewhere between Wii Motion Plus and Microsoft's Natal. Like Microsoft, time will tell as to whether or not they can introduce such a tech and have an impact.

There was a very cool racing thing, Mod Racer or something like that. It was based around Little Big Planet. The racing seemed par for the course but the level editor was really cool and probably my favorite thing at the show. Beyond that they showed some of God of War 3 which looked good but I'm not a fan of the series anyway so... take that for what you will. All in all it was a good show, Sony had some interesting things. The stuff I mentioned is the stuff I remembered.

Oh! Can't forget this one. They showed Final Fantasy XIV. It's another attempt at an online Final Fantasy and will be a PS3 exclusive. I played FFXI, hopefully they've made some worthwhile changes to this latest try. Either way the audience and I agreed that it was interesting but... eh, whatever. Also the FFVII thing was a rerelease, doesn't seem to be a remake. Darn.

Overall I give Sony a C+. They didn't really have any major WOW titles except for the racing game and I guess God of War 3. Their motion controls looked cool but I'm trying to figure out price in my head and it's somewhat confusing.

So more or less a tie this year. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all had pretty decent shows. Sony seemed to be the weakest of the three (historically they're kind of so-so at E3 anyway so take it for what it is) and I'd say Microsoft and Nintendo are more or less in a dead heat.

I agree, A- for Nintendo, and maybe B- for Sony because God of War 3 did look pretty cool.

But when my bro, my friend and I watched the trailer for SMG2, we cried because of how happy we were, especially for yoshi's appearence. Wii Sports Resort also looks sweet. Wii Fit plus is ok, the balance game they demoed looked like something out of sasuke. NSMB for wii looks alright. Baically everything they showed was a win in me eye except for style savvy, some murder mystery game, and COP.

However, I'm still curious what they plan to do with the vitality sensor. Also, where was Miyamoto? Is this the first E3 he missed or something?

I looked at all these games from Sony and Nintendo and there was some nice stuff but I just don't get that feeling I used to get in every E3.....I think I don't care anymore. I can wait till 2020 for these games to come out wekekekkekie

I'm actually more happy with Nintendo's conference this year than I was last year... probably because of the new mario games  ;D

Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks sweet. Even though it may have some elements of the old game (spin attack type stuff, and sling stars), it still looks like its own game instead of the same thing reborn with different levels.

New Super will be interesting in 4 player mode, but I wonder if there is single player mode and what it's like.

From what I remember hearing and reading on the Feed, NSMB for wii is due out for the holidays and SMG2 is due for next year... it's a good strategy to have this order for them.... BUT I REALLY WANT SMG2, if I had the time I would go to NOA and beg them to give me a copy and make sure that I would not leave without it.

Alright, some stuff I've been looking around at. First off, use your Wii if you have one and go to the Nintendo channel! Lots of good videos up there.

I've heard more reports that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is fun and also challenging and the gameplay videos I've seen are pretty sweet. Miyamoto was quoted during his round table today that NSMBW will not have online functionality because it uses all of the Wii's processing power.

Also, Metroid: Other M... I watched the trailer a few times and it was very good. Then I noticed this... Other M... MOther. I'm sure other people have noticed this too by now but take that for what you will. In the trailer at the end, the scientist looks more like Samus than the woman that is supposed to be Samus. You notice that? Maybe Samus isn't Samus! :o

Finally, there was BIT.TRIP CORE footage floating around for almost a month but I didn't notice it until today. If you're a fan of BIT.TRIP BEAT you must check this game out! It looks INCREDIBLE! See it here! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO0hliWO7Kg)

That is all for now!

A 2d game taking up all the wii's processor power? I'm calling BS.

Out of all the games announced, the Metroid game caught my eye. Finally, a game that might actually make me willingly want to play a metroid game without being turned off by all the back tracking and large confusing levels.

Oh please.  This makes NSMBW a lot less appealing to me, since the majority of my friends live in other states or countries.

Come on, Nintendo, stop giving people reasons to call the Wii a Gamecube 1.5.

I don't think it'll be a remake. The predecessor is too new to be remade. On the other hand it looks like it's going to be very similar.

All of the levels they showed featured things that were not in New Super Mario Bros. on the DS. And from what they've said, you can play it by yourself too without any problem.

Also, Project Natal is supposed to be pretty cool (http://kotaku.com/5276789/from-stick-figure-to-mind+blowing-controls).
Title: Re: E3

Just thought of something.  SMG2 is like The Lost Levels of Mario Galaxy.  It's similar to the original, but has new stuff, and has the same graphics style.  It's harder, too.

SMB is to SMB2J as SMG is to SMG2.
Title: Re: E3

I guess you could think of it like that Blue Protoman.

But PatMan33, project natal is a good concept and has potential but when I watched the demonstrations that they did with the people doing the demos, I laughed at them for how ridiculous they looked. It's like playing NES with the Rolling Rocker, doesn't look like a lot of fun for long term use.

No sillier than anyone looks playing the Wii.

Don't get me wrong, I'm skeptical about Microsoft's and Sony's offerings but hey... it's no different than when the Wii was announced. Sony's seems a little silly at the moment only because it appears to be severely unfinished (this was even alluded to by the presenter); Microsoft, on the other hand, looks as if they have a solid product. My biggest problem with Natal is that every impression that I've read about it says that the demo took place in a spotless white room.

I suspect that Natal may have some serious issues when it comes to placing it in an average person's living room.

In the end, I'm fine with my Wii and I enjoy it quite a bit. The motion controls are still a side show as far as I'm concerned. All I want is my Mario and my Zelda and my Metroid and a few others that I can only get at Nintendo. The nice thing about Sony and Microsoft is that (seeing as I'm a prolific PC gamer) any game I want that's on those consoles is also available on my computer. ;)

For Microsoft, I dunno. The fact they got a MGS game along with Left 4 Dead 2, Splinter Cell, and a few other games are just great. Not saying they didn't have there share of crap as well (Tony Hawk, The Beatles Rock Band, HALO THE BEST FPS EVER!!! [/sarcasm], Project Natal (Wii Clone, ugh))

Other then that, Really can't say much, was impressed with what they put out.

Microsft B+

Nintendo didnt wow me with more games aimed at casuals. (wii sports resort, that fucking lie detector thing). Nintendo's major announcements this year, being the two mario games just seem so.... i dunno. I just think they rushed them.

Like NSMB, I mean come on, two toads? What happen to Princess Peach? I'm sure the cast of SMB2 would have worked just fine in that. Although from what I seen from game play trailers it does look pretty fun, I just wish they would have spent more time with the multi player aspect at mind, considering this is WHAT they were going for after all.

As for SMG2....I guess it's okay. I really wish they would have picked a new location instead of space (again) because when you think about it, every mario game took place somewhere different. (SMB2 - Subspace, SMB3 - Around the whole world, SMW - Dinosaur Land, SM64 - Inside the Princesses Castle, SMS - Delfino Island, etc) I guess i'm just a wee bit disappointed they decided to go with space again. Although, it does seems he's been pretty much everywhere so I guess that you really can't go anywhere else. From what I seen though it's the same fun game play so I'll still end up getting it eventually.

Really, the only thing about Nintendo's conference that got me was the new Metroid. It looks great, it's something new I've wanted for a while now with Metroid, I just hope Team Ninja doesn't make it Ryu in the Power Suit.

I know i'm being rather harsh on Nintendo but Microsoft set the bar and Nintendo barely got to it for me. I want Nintendo to do better as a company, and this was WAY better then that fiasco from last year.

Nintendo B-

Now  for the Sony's conference..... I just thought it was blander then bland. PSP is just dying and they remodeled it in hopes of suckering people into buying a hand held that is really just used for emulation and the like. A motion sensor clone that looks like crap compared to the Wii, Titles that bare no interests to me beside God of War 3 which doesn't look to be a large improvement over any of the other GoW games i've played (if you've played one, you've played them all)

All I seen were a bunch of PSP games that look like crap. Not to mention Sony brought out the old numbers game to try and show they are actually selling those 400 dollar paperweights. Bleh.

Sony: C+

Really hoping for third party companies for the Wii to really showcase what they've got in store for Nintendo, Sony and Xbox. This is where the real magic happens and lets see if they deliver.

TL; DR : Microsoft honestly did the best, Nintendo being second while Sony being third. Hoping for games of my liking to get announced.

I'm still debating. Because it would be nice to have the color that was first featured at E3 2005 when Twilight Princess was announced. However, I've become to used to the idea that the wii looks its best in white. White makes the wii look a little more sophisticated and futuristic.

I would too but when it gets dirty, it's obvious. So the debate in my head is White for sophisticated and futuristic, or Black because it looks cool, was the first color shown in public (to my knowledge), and hides dirt better.

Maybe, I have no idea. Although I don't clean the wii since it isn't mine anyway, it's my brother's wii.

All of my videogame stuff is in the basement where it's open to (but thankfully not anywhere near) sawdust, more dust, etc. Probably not the best place, but every week I make it a point to go down and make sure that the consoles are clean and the controllers as well. The games and manuals I keep in boxes that I got from digital press when I bought a couple systems there. Any other boxes I use for display and wipe them off almost never.

According to a friend of mine, Miyamoto is quoted confirming that there is a wii zelda in development where Link is an adult...

Can anyone confirm this?
Title: Re: E3
Post by: PatMan33 on June 04, 2009, 07:23:11 pm
That's not entirely true. The quote (it happened in a private round table session on Tuesday) was that Aonuma (the man who is now responsible for Zelda) and his team are hard at work on a new Zelda game. A sketch was shown that pictured a teen aged Link (they said late teens) standing back to back with a woman in blue (assumed to be Zelda). Most reports say that the drawing was fairly generic.

Beyond that, Miyamoto has said he'd like to show Zelda at next year's E3.

You can find info to back that up here (http://kotaku.com/5276497/liveblogging-shigeru-miyamotos-developer-round-table), here (http://kotaku.com/5276495/miyamoto-addresses-zeldas-e3-absence), and here (http://kotaku.com/5276559/miyamoto-wants-to-announce-new-zelda-next-year).
