Title: Four letter names
Post by: UglyJoe on August 04, 2008, 07:18:19 am
As I'm sure you all know, a lot of 8-bit RPGs only allowed you four letters/kana to name your characters.  I'm curious now, what did you all used to use (or still use) when naming your characters?

I would usually use BOB or JOE (no lower case font  ;)) and use a space to fill in the last character.  In Final Fantasy, my brother and I used to name the characters after what function they served.  Fighters were always BASH or KILL.  White mages were HEAL.  Black mages were BURN.  Whenever I used a Thief, I named them PHIL.  I have no idea why.

Nowadays, I usually use HURR, so I can imagine the NPCs making a dumb sound when talking to me.  "You must save the princess, HURR".  For Famicom games, I'll use kekekeke, because it's a silly Korean laugh meme and it's easy for me to spot it in text boxes.

I have a friend called Phil...  :D

When the game lets me use 4 Japanese characters I always use my "Japanized" name: マヌエル.

Other than that I often use the default name if there is one.

Sadly my name is 5 kana :'( (エミリアノ)

This is my naming algorithm:

* When 3 Roman letters are needed (like in arcades), I use combinations like ASS, GAY, SEX, etc.
* When 4 Roman letters are needed (like in old RPGs), I use combinations like FUCK, SHIT, PISS, CUNT, etc.
* If more than 4 letters are available, I just use my nickname (133MHz) or use a Spanish swear word.

My real name, Tim, is only 3 letters, so as a kid I'd name myself the main character all the time. I was an egomaniac as a child.

Usually I just use default names, but I did call Cloud Goku once. I also used the ASS name a bunch of times.

I sometimes just have fun with them, but I'll often shorten Michael to Mikl or Mikel (and then I say "Michael" in my head when I read it).
