Before you say it, yes I am a really crazed Contra fan. I got more Contra games than anyone thinks (Just visit my site: www.contraseries.weebly.com).
Anybody got rare ports/versions? Discuss Contra, gentlemen!
I liked Contra a lot for like a week and then I moved on. I've never gotten to too into any series, really.
I always found Contra way too hard & frustrating to get much fun out of it. Even now, years later, I still find it incredibly hard. :P
The original Contra is one of my favorite games ever. All the others seem to be less awesome. They're mostly still good, but nothing compares to the original.
The original NES game was brilliant, tied to first place with Super Mario Bros. The sequels on new consoles have been >:(
And I can't even play the old one anymore. I used to complete the game many times a day, now it's game over on 5th level. New games are so easy.
I was into the NES ones., even Contra Force - just because it was different doesn't mean it was bad; the slowdown was why it was bad, but I still liked it.
I played the Contra Adventure for the PlayStation & ever since, I stayed away from recent Contra games.

Does it slow down on an overclocked NES, or whatever it's called?
Anyone who hated the newer games should play Contra 4. It's a return to the old form and it's amazing. I still haven't managed to beat it.
Contra 4 was almost like Wayforward wanted to give me something for my birthday 8) It was released right on my birthday... but copies only made it to local shelves about a week later 8(
I love the contra series. I still pop in the Famicom or NES cart of Contra or Super Contra to play the game. I also have Contra 4 which is a pretty kewl game! You can unlock the old contras in that game as well!
I'm about as "Rabid" a CONTRA fan as you're likely to ever bump into. But my tastes in which ones I consider King of the wolf pack tends to make others say: Are you serious? This has more to do with however, (IMO) that there are fans from two different camps of people. Those who prefer and actually think of the originals in 2-D as the best, and those who have taken to the Neo Contra effect and would place that as the best title then work their way down. For me I'd list them as such...
SUPER CONTRA (Arcade)
CONTRA SPIRITS (Super Famicom/SNES)
CONTRA (Famicom/NES)
SUPER CONTRA (Famicom/NES)
CONTRA 4 (Nintendo DS)
CONTRA HARD CORPS (Mega Drive/Genesis)
CONTRA (Arcade)
CONTRA: SS (Playstation 2)
NEO CONTRA (Playstation 2)
OPERATION CONTRA (Gameboy)
CONTRA FORCE (Famicom/NES)
On that last part I'm not sure if "Contra Force" got an official release in Japan, but I always refer to any and all game systems by their original Japanese names, thus even when talking about the NES, I'll call it "Famicom". I'm neurotic like that though, so please forgive. In my opinon though, KONAMI got everything right with the arcade version of 1988's *Super Contra*, from level design, the H.R. Giger-esque (so obvious here in this game over all others) presentations, to the kick ass pre title screen opening with Bill & Lance. To this day I'm still impressed with that whole intro. Probably my only complaint about Super Contra (Arcade) is that it was too damn short. In this regard I like the Famicom/NES version with the 8 Stages in it, and that wasn't a bad port... it just lacked the high def (for back then) depection of the Arcade older brother. Most ppl I run into prefer and list Contra Spirits (well, they call it "Contra III: The Alien Wars") as being their favorite or the best in the series though, so there's usually some convo over why I prefer Super Contra Arcade as being the best. But to each their own really. Overall, it's a series that just never gets old, and really ANY of the games save those two blasphemous PS1 titles I didn't list are a good way to waste 25minutes of your life. To be fair, *Neo Contra* wasn't a bad game at all... I just hated the prespective it took and I'm a 2-D man over 3-D stuff.
Contra Force was originally planned as a non-Contra game for the Famicom called "Arc Hound" , but it ended up being a Contra sequel, wasn't released in Japan, & (in most people's tall expectations) sucked.
It's a cool game, but the slowdown is horrendous.
There is a PSone contra called Contra Adventure I saw on youtube. I liked it so much that I just bought a copy of it on ebay. I can't wait to try this contra out.

WOW, didn't know that. That probably explains why it really doesn't FEEL like a Contra game then. To me it was more like living out an "action only" version of the little known (or forgotten) TV spy show
Counter Strike from the 90s with Christopher Plummer. Having this crew hit up terrorists and other groups. Funny thing is, and I said that back when the game came out.
If the game didn't have the CONTRA name attatched to it, I might almost like this game. Now in 2008 I learn that was indeed the fact. ;D *Arc Hound* actually is a cool title too. Oh well. We live, we learn. Hmm... now where's Alanis when I need her?
I would like to see this "Arc Hound" beta, if it exists. ;)
That is a different contra. I guess people said it sucked because it didn't played like its predecessors.
Interesting. Me, in terms of hardcore fan, I'm one of the biggest Contra game collectors. My site lists most, if not, all the games I've played.
@Jedi Questmaster: When you say "Arc Hound beta", do you mean you want screenshots or something? I have quite a few of them, most are the same as the final, though a couple show noticeable changes.
I'd be interested in a rom, if there's one around.
Nope. This Arc Hound was never released or even leaked. Thing is, a bit before shipped away, they renamed it to Contra Force. So in other words, Arc Hound would be the exact same as Contra Force, save for the title. The screenshots that showed different from the final product must have been really early in development (though one of the screens really give a Double Dragon feel).
