Does anyone know if a game released after the DSi would be compatable with the DS Lite ?
Or would the post-DSi released game be only compatable with the DSi ?
Does this make any sense ?
I would imagine that any game that uses the standard DS slot will work on all three systems. Nintendo, like any company, has to work with the lowest common denominator in mind; however, I expect that anything utilizing the DSi's SD slot will not work on your DS or DS Lite.
**EDIT**
Unless of course we're going to be bringing wizards into this.
Umm...no...that's like asking if DS games are compatible with the GBA
DSi games are only playable on the DSi as of right now..but you can play DS games on a DSi..but not GBA games :(
That's not quite right. DS games will still work with your DSi and vice versa. The part of the DSi that will NOT work is anything that involves the newly added SD slot. Note though that any DS games that used the GBA slot (Guitar Hero and what-have-you) will not work with the DSi since that slot has been removed.
In short, if the game uses the standard DS card slot you will be able to play it on your older DS or DS Lite.
As of now, there are no DSi games released on a cart. The DSi exclusive games/software are purchased in an online store, similar to how WiiWare titles are downloaded for the Wii. These, obviously, won't be making their way onto the DS.

Sources?
I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Quote from: engadget.comcertain DSi-specific games won't work for everybody else, but the DSi fires up regular DS games from wherever with no problem. Import away!
The implication being that DS games released for the DSi will work on your DS or DS Lite. As was stated by myself, others, and this article, DSi-specific titles will not work on your DS or DS Lite.
Read it for yourself. What we can conclude is that we'll have to divide any future Nintendo handheld games into one of two categories. They'll either be DS games which can be played on all of their DS systems or they'll be DSi games which can only be played on the DSi system. So, in a sense, you were correct and I was wrong... but that's not how I'm remembering it so hah!
So what you're saying is...
Nintendo will make 2 types of DSi games:
1. DSi Only games that make use of the SD card slot or otherwise
2. DSi games that include no new features, and in that sense are exactly like DS games.
Is this correct?

Assuming they ever release DSi games that aren't digitally distributed, yes. The article is really more about region locking, which is saying that DS games will still have no region lock on the DSi, but the DSiWare games/software will be region locked.

Nah, I'm saying that there will be DSi-specific games and standard DS games that every DS can play.
Also I stretched the meaning of that article a tad. It mentioned, like you said, that the DSi can play DS games with no problem so... I'm pulling that blanket over the whole thing.
Exciting! Real debate about modern games on the Famicom forum! :D
**EDIT**
Also, that digital distribution thing is a great idea. It's a fantastic way to remove any confusion about what can be played on which system.
THE DSI IS BUTT
That's just me though. Nintendo was cool, until they had to bring region lock into this.
*shrug*
I'm looking forward to the DSi! Any excuse to not have to use my DS Lite with the funky screen. ;)
So, let me see if I can sort this out
DS Lite:
Can play DSi carts that do not have new features
Can play games from any region
Can play GBA carts
DSi:
Can play all existing DS carts
Can only play DSi carts from own region
Can only use downloadable content from its own regional store
Can not play GBA carts
That cover it? I want to get a DS, but I keep debating back and forth whether I want to get a Lite before the DSi ships. I've never gotten around to buying a DS yet.
Yeah I think I may get a DSi too...
I got a DS Lite on launch day..and it's been through some tough times :D So I think I have some good reasons to get one.

So what you're saying is... they will still release regular ol' DS games long after the DSi is released? Or am I horribly mistaken?
Just use your DS for DS games, and DSi for DSi games.
That's the whole point of the DSi...
So you can play both on it
And besides..if my Lite didn't have problems, I probably wouldn't get it..
I must sound like a broken record here, but there is no such thing as a DSi cartridge. It's been out since October and the only cart that's specifically for the DSi is a flash cart for playing pirated roms homebrew stuff.
Mmmm... say it again... :-*
Nintendo pisses me off. The DS Lite didn't need to be redesigned. AGAIN. Its just like what happened with the GBA. The SP was so awesome I don't understand why they even bothered making the Micro.
My favorite handheld? Still the second generation GBA SP with the backlit screen. With an SD- flash cart capable of running GB, GBC GBA, NES and a slew of other games. Damn sexy little beast.

So that means some homeless kid who finds one on the street won't be able to play it :'(

Except, you know, people will buy it in droves and Nintendo likes to make money. If that's not a good reason, I don't know what is.
Doesn't it suck to know too much? :P
