Armadillo II??
where did you hear this?
There's a bit about it in Japanese here: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/mab08.html#3 (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/mab08.html#3)
There's a couple of scanned screen shots too.
There's quite a few unreleased games on that site in fact: http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/mab00.html (http://www.ne.jp/asahi/oroti/famicom/mab00.html)
Looking at the list anyone got any more info on あるでんらるでん (aruden raruden)? It looks just like Robocco Wars.
Does it count if the game was scrapped in Japan, then released under a different name elsewhere?
I'd think that could be included. And I'll try to have some screens from Armadillo II soon. Don't know if the ROM ever got out. I imagine, just like with the NES, some of the ROMs got out as protos.

FDS version of the Mii Channel :P
Did that have a name?
I just won a handbill for the unreleased Armadillo 2.

I'll take better scans once it arrives!!
Hey, you got ahead of me here. :P I was gonna ask you for a nice scan of it so I could crop the screens.
That handbill is the nuts!!
Is that a Gameboy version of Armadillo I see?
Where did you find the handbill? Yahoo Auctions?

Yes, the bottom right corner is a tiny ad for the GameBoy version of Armadillo that was never released. The rest of it is for Armadillo 2 for Famicom that was also never released.

The katakana on that handbill is WAY off. It should say "アルマジロ", arumajiro. It says something like "apaajiro". Maybe it's the weird font throwing me off...

Just the weird font. You can make it out, almost if you concentrate enough!
As promised, you can get a bigger scan of the Armadillo II handbill at:

Donkey Kong Music Education
Thanks to me. 8)
Earth Bound (If NES counts)
Unreleased NES games don't count ;)
If Armadillo II came to light we would have seen another excellent hack Mario game. Because original armadillo made one of the best mario pirates, Super Mario Bros IV.
The screens of the second Armadillo look awesome. Wish it had been released. Maybe there's a proto out there that'll pop up. In the meantime, no Mario hack.
I bet there were several games developed for the FDS that never got released on disk because of the "quick" end of the Disk System -- also never released on cart, like some of the re-releases.

There's an unreleased game on a handbill.
J.C. that looks like a cool game do you know its name in english and was it released on other platforms?
Legend of Hero Tonma is the name in english as well. It was released for turbografx-16 and pc-engine. It's a pretty cool arcade port. I own the turbografx-16 version. I can only imagine how cool it would have been on famicom. :)
Looks neat. Maybe I'll have to find me the PC Engine version you mentioned.
Strider Hiryu - Came out in the west but not in Japan
Black Dragon (Black Tiger) (FDS) - Capcom cancelled it when Nintendo discontinued the FDS.
Arc Hound - Came out in the US as Contra Force
Strider? Really?
There was no JP release of it, no. I'm not sure if there was a FC release planned, though. Do you have magazine scans or fliers or something that can support that, Nintega?

Here is a video of the cancelled Famicom Strider Hiryu. Interesting enough, the game has a copyright of 1988 predating the arcade game. Maybe this was in development before it?

I didn't know that! I learned something today.
Wow, very cool. Thanks for posting that!
Does anyone know if Super Mario World was really under development for Famicom or NES?
Well, the "subtitle" is Super Mario Bros. 4, so it is a sequel to SMB3, but I personally don't think it was ever planned or in development for the Famicom.
I don't think it's too outlandish to believe so. SMB3 was released in '88 and SMW was released in '90. Nintendo may have very well been working on SMW for the FC and decided to take their ideas to the SFC instead.
A thread over at RHDN mentions that there may have been a Monster Party FC prototype:

There's a scan of a screenshot of the title screen in the link posted by the OP. Anyone know anything about this?
RE: JC - Super Mario World
I remember seeing some screens from this version of Super Mario World a few years ago. They were of the map, which looked much different. The game also seemed to have pretty decent looking graphics from what I saw. The article mentioned that the game was planned for release on the Famicom, but scrapped for the Super Famicom. I believe that it also mentioned that the game used a special graphics chip, or something to that effect.
Is this an unreleased game? http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f84566927
Looks that way. Square released Aliens for the MSX and this looks to be a port of the same game:

Do you have a scan of the back label ?
"Rumor has it that there is a new Mario coming on the scene for you die-hard 8-bit Nintendo fans. We've heard whisperings that Super Mario 4 for the original NES system will be out sometime in 1992. No confirmation yet from Nintendo yet, but we'll keep our ears open." - Game Informer Jan/Feb 1992 (pg 17).
They don't call me the frank cifaldi of NJ for nothing! ;D

It's funny, Nintendo did something similar years down the road. Super Mario FX was going to be one of the last SNES games but they took the project and moved to the then Ultra 64 and made Super Mario 64 instead.
You know, I don't think Super Mario FX was ever in development. I think it was just a hoax. Prove me wrong, internet!
Aliens(Square)(FDS) 1987
What about Wakusei Aton Gaiden for the FDS? Wikipedia Japan has it listed in it's FDS catalog but I heard somewhere it was never actually released.

If any of these unreleased ones show up, does anybody have a suggestion on how to authenticate them? If its a prototype that has a rom release, then we know someone could write the game to the disk. How to determine its not a fan created label?
