Please post a reply saying your answer. :) We won't burn you for not having one...

I own a Famicom, and a Disk System. Still hoping to find an AV Famicom or a Twin.

Yep I do -- CIB. But I'm thinking of selling it since I can't get it to work on my stupid TV. I figure I can play all my Famicom games on my NES.

I only own clones & quite a few NESs. Most are in the loft though since I moved house, just got a few portables around if I need them.

Had a clone, but controller 1 port doesn't even work and the controller is proprietary.

So a lot of you actually play your old systems? I keep mine in the box and emulate. Stuff thats nearing 25 years old, in my opinion, isn't going to last long and I want to make sure it stays in good condition. Opinions?

I don't  have a famicom system.  I usually play my famicom games on my SNES with a Super 8 adapter.  I also have tons of famicom to NES converters for when I use my top loader NES system.

My Atari 2600 is 30 years old.  It still works and looks just like it is new.  My Atari 5200, NES, FamiCom, GameBoy, Atari Super Pong, and any other near 20 year old system that I may have forgotten, all work.  Heck all of my systems work.

See List below:
Quote from: super56k on September 14, 2006, 10:53:53 pm

Do not be afraid to play your systems,  most first party systems are built for life.  (Save the PS2, it's rubbish.)  Emulation is never perfect, pure hardware it the only way to fly.

One question I have, is when people talk about getting an AV Famicom, are they talking about the model 2 famicom (which was basically the same as the model 2 NES, the top loading version) or are they talking about a regular famicom that is AV modded?
Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?
Post by: kite200 on June 18, 2007, 09:58:24 pm
model 2
Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?
Post by: satoshi_matrix on June 19, 2007, 09:15:09 am
The Model 2 I suppose you could call it. Nintendo simply called it the Famicom, but since the box states AV on it I, as well as a lot of other people, call it the AV Famicom. I mean, I think its my favorite system of all time. Not only does it look slick, it is able to plug in any NES controller, its small and light, its toploading, and it even uses the same AV cable that the SNES/N64/Gamecube uses! Too bad the Wii had to switch to a new design!

I have

Japanese Version Famicom

Taiwanese version Famicom (it doesn't work crap because it's different than the Japanese one) Planning to sell it.

and

Japanese Famicom with AV modded.

The NES toploader has RF out only.
Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?
Post by: satoshi_matrix on June 19, 2007, 09:39:43 pm
The NES 2 and AV Famicom are identical exepct for the following:

-NES 2 has 72-pin connector, AV Famicom has 60-pin connector. (obviously)
-NES 2 is RF only, AV Famicom is AV only. The NES 2 uses the same RF adaptor the
'toaster' NES and SNES use. The AV Famicom uses the same AV cable as the SNES, N64 and Gamecube.
-NES 2 dogbone controllers are 9' long, AV Famicom donbone controllers are 3 or 4' long, dont remember which, but they are the same length as the wired controllers of the first Famicom.

Other than that, they are identical. once you have an AV Famicom, you don't really need anything else. I use it for all my Famicom AND NES needs.

The NES 2 controllers were 9 inches?  I don't remember them being that big.  I remember them being about the same size as the toaster NES controllers
Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?

He meant the controller cords, not the controllers themselves.

Yes, the controller cords. Sorry for the confusion.

I own an American NES with a converter to play Famicom games, and several famiclones (usually used for electronics experiments  ;D). Also I'm planning to overclock my NES very soon (got lots of crystal oscillators from an old ISA video card, now I only need a several position switch to switch between them)

Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?
Post by: chiaotzu on July 23, 2007, 09:17:59 pm
I own a Famicom AV, Famicom original, and a Disk system.

Also on the earlier topic, I noticed one other difference between the Famicom AV and the NES 2.
These are that the Famicom AV is not compatable with the American Zapper attatchment.
But the Famicom AV has an auxilary port on the side that is normally on the front of the Famicom Original.
Now this port works great with the Japanese Gun.
I am not sure about other accessories yet, like Rob or the Track pads. But I would imagin that they probably perform with this same limitation on the AV.
Title: Re: Do you own a Famicom?
Post by: satoshi_matrix on July 23, 2007, 10:29:18 pm
the AV famicom supports all NES accessories; ROB, Zapper, Powerpad, PowerGlove, etc. It also supports all Famicom EXT accessories: lightgun, Family Robot, Family BASIC keyboard, etc. Its the best of both worlds.

The cords of my NES 2 controllers are very, very long!
Much longer than the toaster ones!

Well, yeah, I own 2 Family Computers!
The first and über-classic model and the Famicom AV
wonder, the best 8-Bit console ever.

I own a Famicom, round buttoned, in box. It was shipped with games and they used japanese newspapers to package it so that's a good bonus.

The system in in great condition, everything works. I have Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3, Dr. Mario, and Thunderbirds.

I hope to get my hands on a disk system and the light gun, that would be awesome!

Yup! It's in pretty good condition, still white. It's missing the expansion port cover and I unplug when it's not in use. One can never be too careful! But it's played often. I also don't play during bad weather in case of a power surge or whatever. It's the classic one, with the connected controllers and textured bottom.

Now I have an Educational Computer Professional, which is a keyboard.  The power cord is laughably short.  I've eaten meals bigger than it.

Those power adapters are a joke. Be careful, they might spontaneously combust (happened to me - it was sitting there plugged in, not being used and it suddenly started smoking and the plastic melted down).
If possible, throw it away and get a proper one.

I have a square buttoned Famicom with a smooth bottom. The mobo, however, is from 1984.

What!?  I gave one of those to my cousin!  Is there an adaptor you recommend?  I refuse to experiment, for fear of breaking my console.

Anything is better than those POS adapters. A Famicom/Super Famicom, Sega Genesis 1 or TurboGrafx 16 adapter will work fine. Also look for old cordless phone/tape player/etc power adapters with 9V DC and negative tip output. Universal/generic adapters also work OK if properly set.

Seriously, anything is better.

This is the current status of my Famicom.  ::)

Don't worry the NES controller is only temporary. I'll get the proper controller back on it this weekend.
I hate how the NES controller feels compared to the Famicom one.

That is one white Famicom. ;D

Actually, I don't think a Famicom would look that bad with 2 NES controllers, but then again, it's not nearly as cool as 2 square-button controllers.

As far as an official product, yes... I have a Sharp Twin famicom... black one with red small parts (cart slot cover, and a couple other bits). I still have the box for this thing, so it tends to get babied a bit.

I have a red and white Famicom and a FDS, Two gray spanish NES and a couple of chinese clones.

You can check some pictures of my Famicom and FDS here: http://picasaweb.google.com/robcfg/RetrocomputersCollection# (http://picasaweb.google.com/robcfg/RetrocomputersCollection#)

The gray NES's do work as it does the FDS and one of the clones. The Famicom doesn't show any reaction so I don't know wether it is broken or simply I cannot get it to be seen on my tv. The second clone also seems not to work but I'm not quite sure yet.

Since you're from Spain, I'm betting that your TV can't tune into the Famicom's NTSC-J signal.
Even if you have a Multisystem TV, those usually only support NTSC through the AV inputs and not through the antenna.
You'll have to AV mod it to get it to display on your TV (and if your TV is PAL only, you will only see a rolling, B&W picture).

The problem with original model Famicoms and European / British TV sets isn't NTSC incompatability per se. The tuners in European TV sets just aren't capable of tuning into the right frequency. My CRT takes all my other Japanese consoles through composite, S-Video etc but when I try it with an original Famicom it just won't have it :(

I was just pointing out it's not the fact that the signal is NTSC that causes the incompatibility, per se. The sets are capable of displaying NTSC, but their tuners can't tune into the required radio frequency. If you could transmit an NTSC signal over a frequency the TV could receive it ought to work.

You're right. I cannot tune my famicom on any of my TV's, sooooo, I just tried the FDS with a chinese famiclone which has AV out and it worked. So at least the FDS, which is the most rare of the two systems, works.

Just waiting for my Castlevania to arrive...  ::)

I own a super famicom, and I also have a tristar/super 8 which lets you play NES, Famicom on a Super Famicom/SNES system. I also have a tristar 64 that lets you play NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom on an n64 system.

The highest quality video that a non-HD game system (basically anything before xbox1) can acheive. You need an RGB (15khz) capable monitor to view old school gaming in RGB.  gamesx.com  is a good place to start. Most systems like SNES, Jaguar, Sega Genesis, psx, ps2, xbox, sega saturn, and some others are RGB capable with no modifications needed, but systems like NES, 3DO, N64, PC Engine, etc require some sort of internal RGB modification.

@RGB_Gamer: Where did you got your RGB PPU? PlayChoice 10 board or Famicom Titler? Did you mod your NES & converters for FDS extra sound?

I soon will... I just purchased a famicom and a disk system from ebay. The famicom doesn't have a power adaptor and the disk system has a broken belt so I'm going to have to repair it. Wish me luck. :P

Perhaps I should "pimp" out my new system by painting it gold and black or something.

None of the NES was modded by me. The shiny black NES was from a guy on ebay and then sent to a guy that did the RGB mod, including the FDS extra sound. The PPU was from a PC-10 board, also bought on ebay.

The French NES has an RGB output, but it's not a real RGB out. It's a regular PAL NES with a Composite to RGB converter chip. It outputs RGB, but the quality isn't better than composite video.

Nintendo did this because France uses the SECAM TV system which is completely incompatible with anything else in the world. Certainly Nintendo didn't want to bother manufacturing a special, completely different NES just for one country, so they took a PAL NES, replaced the RF switch with an RGB converter (an RGB signal by definition doesn't have any color encoding system) and then said "Hey France, we didn't want to bother with making a SECAM NES just for you, so here you have an European NES with RGB out. How you get it to work is your own business."

RGB_Gamer's NES uses a PPU chip taken from a Nintendo arcade machine, therefore it outputs a true RGB signal which needs three separate amplifiers for accurate TV display.
