Title: manuel's weird Super Mario Bros. pirate cart
Post by: manuel on February 04, 2009, 05:18:18 am
I had those pics in the finds thread, too.

Front side:

Back side:

The label looks nice.

I made a video on the first level to explain in what way the glitch affects the game.

Has anybody ever experienced a glitch like that?
By the way, when I toggle the switch to the right, it's just a normal Super Mario Bros.

What you see is the mirroring being flipped. I think it's commonly referred to as Dream Mary.

Thats a eprom cart with a crummy label, eproms are the easiest way to make a pirate.

That is Dream Mary..I'm surprised you're a mod of FW and haven't heard of it..
I like it because it provides a challenge and gets on your nerves
I would like to have that pirate, it's pretty cool that it lets you switch between SMB and DM

In fact it's a switchable SMB/DM cart. That's the ultimate proof to my theory. The switch toggles the mirroring on the cart!

Is that even possible ??? :o
You need to open it up RIGHT NOW and see what the switch does on the inside..

That's what it's precisely doing! no doubt about it :P

But I thought you said I had to re-solder some stuff...
And all that does is a little switch...and don't tell me the inside is combustible or something :P

Ah played this game a long time ago. The multi cart that I have calls it fancy bros. It can get quite confusing for people who never played Super mario Bros. lol

The multi ROM I have it on calls it Visionary Mario..and this other multi I saw on eBay called it Brothers in Dream World

That doesn't make any sense.  ???

You just resolder the mirroring thingy with a switch on it.

soldering involves heat..there is no heat in Manuel's cart...

...What you are saying makes no sense.

Whoever it was who created this cartridge soldered a switch to the mirroring things.

The cartridge does not produce heat in which to solder itself.

I know, but I mean to switch the mirrors..you would need to re-solder some points... on the EPROMs or whatever in order to switch it..

That is not what you were saying, though.

Yes, Mirroring was a switch applied.

End of Discussion.

The pads that you solder to choose the mirroring don't have to be necessarily soldered -- you just have to complete the circuit.  A switch is capable of that.

Ah, ok
Thank you Joe for explaining that  :-[

Thanks for the info guys.
And no, I didn't know about Dream Mary. Why should I? I wasn't interested much in hacks and pirates until, well... some days ago.   ::)

I just thought you might have read about it on the site

I didn't read all the pages on the site.  :o
Especially not those related with hacks and pirates.

I actually read the title Dream Mary sometimes, but this didn't wake my interest.
Well, now I know. And I know that I won't sell it as I intended to.

Heh.

Just did that mirror switch thing on my SMB famicom cart :]

So we played this Dream Mary a bit in the evening.

JC's friend Rob made it to 4-2, JC to 6-3 and I to 8-3. We all just tried once and couldn't beat it.  :P

Yes, dork, maybe you should take over Famicom World. Neither the admin, nor a mod can beat Dream Mary with 1 try.  ;)

Yes, hm?  I always found Dream Mary fairly easy, because everything in front of you is exactly the same..you just can't ever look back...ever

There are times you just happen to look or walk back.

I can beat SMB in about 5¾ minutes (yeah I pretty much know the game by heart now) but never had much interest in Dream Mary (after all, it's the technical equivalent of playing a broken game). But this whole challenge thing sparked my interest :).

I have a spare SMB cart that I can mirror-switch, so I'll give it a try ;D.

It's just so tempting to walk on air or jump through a wall sometimes :P
And yeah standard SMB just isn't a...well...a game...it's too simple
Title: Re: manuel's weird Super Mario Bros. pirate cart
Post by: 133MHz on February 06, 2009, 11:20:47 pm
Yeah it's simple now, but remember how hard it was the first time that you played it :P, and also because it was the first time that many people got exposed to this type of games.
I can beat it anytime now but that is thanks to years of practice. Trying to beat Dream Mary seems like a fresh and interesting challenge to me ;).

I have a mirror-switched Excite Bike, too, and it's way harder than the normal game, which I think is pretty easy, too. If you have a spare copy of it, give it a try. Mine's on a multicart, but I'd imagine you could do the same thing with the original game. If you try it, let me know if it works and what you think.

In my best days I also could beat SMB in under 8 minutes. (I am not so much a speedrunner)

But with this Dream Mary it's very nice to walk on air or watch dead piranha plants. That takes time.  :D

I never thought about switching the mirroring on an Excitebike, I'll have to try that sometime...

I've played Dream Mary only a few times, and I still have trouble. :D

for anyone who want to fuck up the mirroring on a game, download a NES rom, edit the iNES header and play it on your favorite emulator!

More info; http://fms.komkon.org/EMUL8/NES.html

Killing the mirroring (in my opinion) is not hacking a game!
