Title: What do you think about mods ?
Post by: Mindfreak on February 06, 2009, 08:52:26 pm
What is your opinion on recycling consoles, hacking, and modding ?

Are you for it or against it ?

thanks for your time.

FOR IT TOTALLY

My Famicom couldn't be anymore awesome then it is now...great picture quality, great sound, no RF hassling, AND I still get extra sound
Though, I do have some issues with modding newer-in-generation consoles..the Wii kills itself if you try and do anything to it..it's like a ticking time-bomb :D
But Wiis are really cool for modding their shells..have you seen those Metroid consoles?  I know a guy did a bunch of those for the Wii, and another guy did a bunch for the NES, and most of them look pretty cool.  They both have videos of them on Youtube too.

Wowee!  That's pretty cool too, but they should've made Mario come out of a green pipe instead of a hole in the BG :o

My opinions are a mixed bag when it comes to console modding.

AV and other electronics mods: A-OK by me, anything that enhances or solves an annoying issue with a gaming system is good in my books, but care should be taken to avoid ruining the aesthetics of the system. I had a dilemma about that recently: My Famicom came with a badly done AV mod, I promptly removed it and even replaced the CH1-CH2 switch that was removed to make room for the AV cable to poke out, I wanted to have such a precious console as pristine as possible, but the picture quality over RF was beyond abysmal. After a lot of thought, I decided to do a proper AV mod (again using the channel select switch hole for the cable) and I couldn't be more satisfied. Picture quality is crystal clear and the mod is surprisingly inconspicuous (also it's pretty easy to remove without leaving a trace of it). Those FC AV mods which drill holes to install big RCA jacks make me cringe. You have to balance between functionality and aesthetics, and remember that in most cases a mod lowers the value of a system.

Paint jobs, blue LEDs, etc.: Let's be honest, the vast majority of them are utter crap, only a very few gems shine on a slowly flowing river of shit. Also it depends on the expendability of the console: I have no problem with NES/SNES or current-gen system mods, since they're everywhere by now and it's pretty easy to get them, but seeing a rare and valuable system slapped with a horrible paintjob and lots of blue LEDs makes me want to strangle whoever did such a horrible thing >:(. When I see one of those I try to think that the system was damaged beyond repair to ease the pain, but even then... what a crime :-\.

For the great mods out there, kudos! For the person selling spray-painted systems on ebay... *censored* >:(

Mini-ITX PC inside a console: It was a novelty a few years ago, now everybody does it. Not fun anymore, get over it. Same considerations as the previous point.

Modchips: Absolutely fantastic. They expand the functionality of great systems making them even greater! Play imports, run homebrew software, etc make for a great gaming experience and make your life easier. Too bad that modchips are overlooked as piracy devices. Also most of them can be removed without a trace, and will probably save current-gen systems from the future. In 100 years later, you'd still be able to play and repair a Famicom if you were to pick one up, but what about an Xbox 360? If you replace the DVD drive it dies! and M$ won't be around to fix it for you. Will your PS1 games survive a hundred years?

In conclusion, I'm all for enhancing the functionality without disturbing the aesthetics too much :).

And that Mario-themed Wii kicks ass ;D. That's a work of art.

I first saw it in a issue of Nintendo Power...and yeah it's as you said, a work of art.

The article came with a website with instructions for anyone brave enough. :P

There are bad mods and good mods. I'm all for the good ones. Don't wanna see lame ones.  ;)

Does anyone remember that auction I posted a while ago of a "modded" NES controller?
It had a hole punched through an empty cart...and the only thing that went through it was the cord on the NES controller....

I'm against it for destroying a system or game but I had to mod my SNES before I got an PAR MK3 and was regretting it for breaking the region tabs. :-\

It gets old fast, lol. :P

There really is no need for a chip for the wii now. its software hacked too now.

I also have the homebrew channel on my Wii with Gecko OS. Why would somone do that to a poor NES controller and cart?

Depends on the kind of mod of course!
I am all for mod-chipping consoles like the PSX, and PS2. I don't even see an issue with someone modding their top loader NES to A/V.I have seen Ataris (standard 2600, and 8 bit computers) that have had video output upgrades. Though I am also a firm believer that if you are going to do this, you should keep an original version of a collectable console around. I have a transparent orange cased PSX, but I Still have a grey box around too. I swap disc modded my PS2 with a trapdoor lid... PS2 isn't really collectable... and aside from the PSX/PS2, my affinity lies with the older stuff anyhow.

But turning a gaming rig into something more efficient has its place.

I also like the hacks a-la Ben Heck... some of that stuff is badass! I really like his 800XL Atari laptop job.... that was uber sweet. And I have NOTHING against hacking an NOAC into a handheld NES/Famicom if  you have the technical know-how. That just LOOKS fun. Of course, the portable SNES is cool too... lots of SNES decks lying around.

I feel NO shame about yanking out my region tabs... Dragon Quest V and VI man!!

I installed Homebrew channel, unreleased VC games, and DVD playback on my Wii.
However, I can tell you all from personal experience, never, ever, EVER put untested .wad files on your Wii. You might as well shovel out the $85 for Nintendo repair service; I was simply creating a custom Earth Bound (Zero) .wad with banner, music, and icon, and I corrupted my machine's memory. If only I had known Starfall with "enable recovery menu" and "disable diagnostic disc check", paired with the Twilight Hack save file on the Wii, could have prevented the brick  :'(

Regarding modification of older consoles, I see it as a waste of time unless some major improvements are made, as with the Famicom AV mod.

I love Benheck mods. I'd like to make portable nes and psx consoles, but I don't have the screens  ;D
Casing would be much easier to make now that I finally have a working cnc machine  ;D

Awesome! I love how the toast gets ejected!

By reading the URL my first thought was one of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Toaster), but this one is much nicer :P.
