Title: Dragon Warrior disappearing saves?
Post by: Bobinsky on February 15, 2009, 10:12:25 am
I recently purchased a copy of Dragon Warrior for my NES.  Every time I save, every few hours or days it gets erased. My NES's pin connector is old and the connection is not so great.

Yeah, you must remember..these carts are 20+ years old.  The save battery in them eventually wears out.
You can get a new one, but I don't know where..

An old or dirty cart connector can cause loss of SRAM data, but I agree with popi and dork. Replace the battery.
You can get a CR2032 battery with pre-soldered tabs for pretty cheap at your favorite electronics store or online.

Thanks, but how exactly do you replace the battery?

Very carefully.  It involves soldering.

Uhm...
Do you know what soldering is?

When you melt the metal, right?

Yes.  If you Google it, you can probably find instructions on how to do this, as your not the first person in the world with this problem ;)

Just don't be like me and not pay attention while soldering, in essence letting it burn your finger... owwwww! I still kick myself for not paying attention, because that bitch hurt for like a week!

You can get one of those cold tip ones.  They're like $20 on ThinkGeek

In that case I'll just buy a different Dragon Warrior because they are a lot cheaper than $20.

Well you can use it for other soldering projects too...did you see that Sort-of-Make-your-own-Pong kit?  Plus if you ever make custom labels or different carts and want to put the boards in a new shell, soldering is the way to go.

You know, the simplest solution is usually the right one. So I have to ask, do you hold down the reset button while pressing the power button off? If you don't, the save can and will erase. Not every time, just once in awhile.

You can buy lots of Dragon Warrior carts, but sooner or later all of them will have a dead battery, because they all were made around the same time. ;)

He will also need the 3.8mm security bit, like I have to take the cart apart safely.

-Edit - Depending on what kind he wants, the price is usually 5 - 15$. The price is worth it because I can maintain my carts forever.

Strange, it appears that Adventure Log 1 never seems to disappear. I saved two files in Log 1 and Log 2 and Log 2 got erased.
